RiverKeeper Behind Times...Raises Paste and Cut Issue

Greetings Readers:

First, do apologize for having been out of site, and out of mind for well over a week here, but afraid that the flu bug took a serious bite out of me...still not up and running 100 percent, but am slowly getting back in action. Since we missed our deadline for the BAA's (Baboon Ass Awards) we will be posting those this coming Monday...the day my own beloved Ohio State plays for the National Championship.

The big news out on the street yesterday and today is the filing of a Petition to halt the licensing process until there is an investigation of the NRC's cut and paste licensing process. Well GEE, correct me if I am wrong, but both FUSE USA and Green Nuclear Butterfly brought this issue to the light of day LAST SUMMER, pointed out, and provided proof that numerous LRA and SER's contained identical language? So nice to know that Riverkeeper invited us to SIGN ON to said petition...NOT. Guess they want every one thinking it was their BRILLIANT research that uncovered this? Be honest folks, they had to wait for the IG's report, Sherwood Martinelli discovered it ALL ON HIS OWN before the IG's findings were announced.

Meanwhile, on another front, we have it from GOOD SOURCES, that the NRC is being awfully quiet about FUSE USA's latest round of filings, and that they are desparately looking for a way to TOSS THEM out of the mix. God forbid they have access to some of the crap that is going to come out in the hearing process! Who knows what they might do with such sensitive information...LIKE MAKE IT PUBLIC!

Citizens groups file petition to halt NRC relicensing review

Tarrytown – The Riverkeeper organization Thursday joined regional and national nuclear watchdog groups in petitioning the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to suspend current license renewal proceedings for the Indian Point, Oyster Creek, Pilgrim and Vermont Yankee nuclear power plants until what it calls “an objective and independent investigation” is conducted into the current license renewal process.

The petition is in response to an NRC Regulatory Commission Office of the Inspector General audit in September 2007 which found the NRC staff failed to verify the authenticity of technical safety information in over 97 percent of the renewal applications audited by OIG; and NRC staff reviewers routinely ‘cut and pasted’ whole sections of the renewal application text into their own safety reviews, rather than write their own evaluations.

Most recently, Entergy Nuclear Northeast submitted its application for a 20-year license extension of the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan. Riverkeeper and New York State have petitioned to intervene in the relicensing proceedings, raising a number of issues ranging from safety and security to environmental impacts.

“For years, Riverkeeper has been gravely concerned about the NRC’s lackluster approach to regulating the nuclear industry,” notes Lisa Rainwater, Riverkeeper’s Policy Director. “The results of the NRC Inspector General’s internal investigation confirm what Riverkeeper and other nuclear watchdog groups have been saying all along--the NRC is rubberstamping license renewal applications and failing to verify that these plants will be run safely during a twenty-year license extension. This cavalier approach to public safety must end.”

Riverkeeper’s announcement and claims “are more fear-mongering and name calling by Riverkeeper,” said Paul Steidler, director of Communications for the New York Affordable Reliable Electricity Alliance. “At the end of the day the NRC has an excellent track record. In more than 50 years of operation no worker or member of the public has ever died because of radiological missteps at a commercial U.S. nuclear power plant. If Riverkeeper has specific scientific or engineering concerns about Indian Point or any other plant, they should bring these to the attention of the NRC first, and save fear mongering press releases for later.”

Marilyn Elie of IPSEC Worried About FUSE USA Fallout?

From the little bird department...it seems that Marilyn Elie is worried about the possible negative fall out surrounding the departure of Susan Shapiro from the FUSE USA board of directors. Apparently, she feels Sherwood (that would be me) has opened up another battle front by going so PUBLIC about the FUSE USA break-up. She is worried about what might happen when Entergy gets hold of this information.

For starters, Marilyn Elie can quit worrying, as Entergy already knows, which is verified in Entergy's Thanksgiving Eve Motion To Strike wherein they note the resignation from FUSE USA of Susan Shapiro. First, lets look at the meat of the motion:

As discussed below, FUSE has repeatedly flouted the Commission's Rules of Practice as well as explicit directions by the presiding Atomic Safety and Licensing Board regarding, among other things, service of its Petitions.

Hysterical accusation coming from a company with as many EXEMPTIONS from the rules as Entergy has. Now, FUSE USA obviously disagrees with Entergy's assessments of the situation, but moving on, let us see what these attorneys have to say about Susan Shapiro:

It is reasonable to have expected that Ms. Shapiro, as an attorney, would have mindful of these very elemental requirements without the need for a reminder by the board.

OUCH...talk about a sucker punch from her own colleagues! FUSE USA is in the process of correcting these issues, and will be providing adequate service to Entergy as relates to our "Non-Susan Shapiro" Petition filed in November. It is noted here in defense of Susan Shapiro, that the Federal Registry Notice is at best cloudy on the issue of "Service" stating that Petitions should provide Entergy with a copy of their filings.

As to Marilyn Elie's advice that I should remain mute should a news reporter call for a comment, she can rest assured that FUSE USA just today spoke with a reporter, though not directly related to her areas of concern. Marilyn apparently wants it to appear, that everyone is on the same game page when it comes to shutting down Indian Point.

Now, what I find amazing, is Marilyn's announcement on the IPSEC list about a slew of filings they are intending on filing with the NRC this week. Considering her private email to me last month wherein she stated IPSEC would not be filing any contentions, curious where this major change came from, and how they are planning to hit the ground running now on be a player in this game? Could it be, that they are taking FUSE USA work product, the work product of Sherwood Martinelli, and redrafting it as their own? If so, do they plan on giving CREDIT WHERE CREDIT is due? Have they obtained a release of any kind from FUSE USA for work product created by FUSE USA in preparing their contentions? Inquiring Minds want to know.

Fight To Close Indian Point...Is IPSEC Still Relevant?

There was an article that appeared in the North Country News that posed the question, "Can Indian Point be Attacked?" The question was surprisingly asked by the EPA, and the article written by Abby Luby quoted Phillip Musgrave of Riverkeeper, Congressman John Hall, and Marilyn Elie of IPSEC, which might explain why the article appeared so quickly on the IPSEC list serve this morning. Marilyn Elie's quotes raised some questions in my mind, so I responded to the IPSEC list with some questions. Unfortunately, Mark Jacobs as the moderator of said list censored them, so I am posting those questions here on Green Nuclear Butterfly.

Marilyn Elie representing IPSEC was quoted as saying:

Marilyn Elie of the Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition (IPSEC) an organization of over 70 grassroots groups wanting to shutter the plant, sees the EPA’s comments as a departure from the NRC’s agenda.

“This is a surprising development on the part of the EPA,” she said. “These real world issues like terrorism and a regional energy needs were not going to be considered by the NRC. Now, hopefully they will be.”

First, since when would a group like IPSEC allow the NRC to set the agenda? We all know that the fix is in, and that the NRC has tried to set the table in favor of Entergy successfully relicensing Indian Point. It is the job of our community, and the grassroots environmental community to widen and grow the agenda, so that important issues are actually evaluated in the process. EPA, DEC, and the New York State Attorney General's office should be applauded for their efforts in this regard, as should any grassroots organizations (FUSE USA, Riverkeeper) who are actively involved in the License Renewal Process.

Since IPSEC is wanting to shutter (close) Indian Point, one has to ask what steps IPSEC is taking as an organization representing 70 grassroots groups to be a part of the License Renewal Battle? Are they preparing a Formal Request to Intervene? Perhaps they are writing a Formal Request For a Hearing on behalf of their member organizations, and the public? Is IPSEC working closely with those groups filing contentions, and acting as interveners in the process? Is IPSEC encouraging their member organizations to plug into the fight, and to support those organizations mounting the legal challenge?

Marilyn goes on further to state that "These real world issues like terrorism and regional energy needs were not going to be considered by the NRC." Has she just accepted that as a fact? Curious where she came up with this conclusion, and what if anything IPSEC was/is planning on doing to bring these issues to the forefront on behalf of their 70 plus member organizations and our at risk community? The Environmental Effects of a Terrorist Attack on the spent fuel at Diablo Canyon was forced onto the discussion table because of the fine work of Mothers For Peace. It would seem to make logical sense that IPSEC is planning on filing contentions to bring these issues to the forefront, to force a conversation on these important issues. Or if IPSEC is not pro-actively plugging into the NRC public participation process on behalf of their 70 plus members, then what is IPSEC doing to support those groups that are filing contentions, are watching out for our community, are taking steps to protect human health and the environment?

In short, has IPSEC been able to reach a CONSENSUS as and organization on where they intend to fit into the fight to Close Down Indian Point? If they have, when can the community expect to know what those plans are? After all, isn't the core purpose of IPSEC to Close Down Indian Point?

Kazuyuki Takemoto: changing nuclear policy from the regions

The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is the largest NPP in the world, with 7 reactors and a total power output of 8,212 MWe. It was built by the largest electric power company in Japan, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).

Kashiwazaki City and Kariwa Village are located 250 km north west of the capital, Tokyo. The area has a population of 100,000 people and is surrounded by mountains and sea. It is mainly a region of paddy fields, but there was oil drilling there 100 years ago and some related machinery industry remains. The plan for a nuclear power plant was announced in 1969, just when agriculture began to decline.

Kazuyuki Takemoto was born in 1950, the oldest son of a farmer whose farm was near the NPP site. A farmer himself and also a technologist involved in agricultural construction, Kazuyuki is engaged in survey, planning and design work related to water and soil. He is also involved in flood response and post-earthquake recovery planning. He has opposed the NPP plan ever since it was announced, taking the view that "nuclear energy is dangerous and will ruin the local community". He has been campaigning now for over 35 years. During that period he was a local councilor for 6 terms, for a total of 24 years.

Besides protesting the all too frequent nuclear accidents, in 1979 the movement against the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa NPP initiated a lawsuit for the annulment of the plant's license. This lawsuit is still continuing. It has been campaigning against the pluthermal plan since 1997 and is also campaigning on the problem of electro-magnetic radiation associated with high voltage transmission cables.

More than 20 years have passed since the first reactor at Kashiwazaki commenced operations. Aging is a big issue and numerous cracks have appeared in the pipes and structural components of reactor cores. Kazuyuki is a key member of the movement, employing the wealth of knowledge he has picked up from experts to home in on TEPCO's weak points. Consequently, he is a very busy man.

Kariwa Village, where Kazuyuki lives, has a population of 5,000 people. One in every four families has a family member who makes his or her living at the NPP or at a related company. It is like a castle town, totally dependent on the castle, though in this case the castle is the NPP. But it was this same Kariwa Village which, in 2001, held a referendum and a majority voted against the pluthermal1 plan. This achievement was brought about by the joint efforts of many people within the movement.

Kazuyuki studied geology and seismology and in 1974 drew attention to the poor quality of the ground on which the NPP stands, pointing out that the NPP would not withstand a powerful earthquake. Ever since, he has been arguing with TEPCO, which built the plant, and the government, which approved the license, about the NPP's earthquake resistance. The Niigata Prefecture Chuetsu Earthquake occurred in October 2004. Now, the ability of the plant to withstand earthquakes has become the issue of greatest concern in the area. Recently, people working at the NPP have begun to give inside information to the anti-nuclear energy movement in Kashiwazaki and Kariwa. This is evidence that the movement, which has been campaigning for all these years, is trusted in the local area. The Kashiwazaki Kariwa anti-nuclear energy movement hopes to change nuclear policy from the regions. Kazuyuki Takemoto sees nuclear energy as war technology, which began with Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He believes that it is incompatible with human peace and environmental preservation. He is engaged in the movement against nuclear energy, because he believes that society must rid itself of nuclear energy as soon as it possibly can.

Back From Vacation, Busy Week Planned

For the sake of our children, IPSEC needs to change their image, and way of conducting business... during the relicensing process, action through consensus is a recipe for failure.

Greetings Blog Readers:

Yes, I have been on vacation, getting some much needed rest and relaxation, but am now back and ready to face what promises to be a very busy week here at the Green Nuclear Butterfly as we man the fortresses, and continue our fight against the wrongful relicensing of the aging and brittled Indian Point Nuclear reactors. Thought I would give a quick run down of some of the things we are working on.

1. Remy should be reporting on the *Rock The Reactors* concert event held this past weekend in Woodstock, New York.

2. Green Nuclear Butterfly is working with FUSE to complete comments opposing the New York State Discharge Permit for Indian Point reactors.

3. We are working to schedule a meeting with the state of New York on the permitting process as a stakeholder, and are going to opposed the state meeting with the NEI who is NOT a stakeholder for Indian Point.

4. We are in the process of interviewing and considering the hiring of our first expert witness as we move our Petition to Intervene further down the track.

5. We will be receiving a full box of necessary documents from the DOE this week, and have to prepare proper paperwork to get other documents that require special clearance.

On other fast breaking news...has the time come for IPSEC and their member organizations to reconsider their basic charter or become obsolete? In recent months, IPSEC's basic way of operating has shown itself to be a dismal failure in our community's time of need...when we are staring a wrongful relicensing square in the face, it is necessary to act fast, to be decisive in which direction to turn as and organization. IPSEC's consensus style of management has been a complete disaster, and as a result deadlines have been, and are about to be missed as they languish in shallow waters while the Manna Jo's of the world drag their feet and keep the organization from reaching agreement on what to do, or what petitions to be a part of.

IPSEC has reached a crossroads, and decision time is upon them...if they are going to be effectively involved in the fight to close down Indian Point, they need to trash the consensus style of operation they have played with for years, and elect a board that has the power to actually make decisions for the organization and its members. Failure to realize and accept this reality, failure to make immediate changes makes them obsolete as and organization, and they will not play a part of any merit in the fight...no clearer sign of this reality can be found than Riverkeeper's sudden departure from the coalition after another meaningless emergency of the STEER committee this past week failed to find any consensus, and all agenda items were put on hold until September.

Green Nuclear Butterfly is actively working with three other organizations to put together a new coalition of the ready and willing. We are taking the necessary steps required to merge the necessary talents needed to be a major player in the relicensing process, and hope to announce these developing plans very soon...if you are your organization would like to be a part of this new coalition, please feel free to send and email to uraniumhotspot@aol.com with all your contact information.

Launch of Indian Point Anti-Nuclear Dead Baby Tour Environmental Direct Action Campaign

Entergy's Indian Point and other nuclear reactors are leaking tritium and strontium 90 into our lakes, rivers and oceans here in America, and around the world. Those radioactive contaminants cause cancers, birth defects, and expose women living near nuclear reactors to a greatly increased risk of stillborn infants. Indian Point Dead Baby World Tour-Details Coming Soon

Entergy's aging, failing Indian Point reactors 2 and 3 are trying to get 20 year license renewals while leaking tritium and strontium into the Hudson River. These radioactive contaminants known to cause cancer also elevate birth defects, and place women at a greatly increased risk of having stillborn babies. To bring attention to this issue, to oppose Entergy's attempts to relicense these dangerous reactors, this blog will be sending symbolic dead babies (dolls) out on a world tour by leaving them at various locations.

If you find one of these dolls, take pictures of them in unique locations, take them with you on vacation, show them the life that Entergy's Indian Point would deny them, even shoot a video and upload it onto YouTube. Send jpeg files of your dead baby photos, or the link to your YouTube video to ipdeadbabytour@aol.com so that we can create and online Indian Point Dead Baby World Tour here on this blog in the hopes of waking up America to the very real danger of a Chernobyl right here in America as the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) wrongfully rubber stamps the license renewal applications of America's 104 aging degradated reactors for another 20 years. We are hoping to have at least 40 Dead Babies (dolls) traveling around the world by the fall of 2007, and need your help.

Cindy Sheehan Quits Anti-War Movement

At first blush, many might think this headline has nothing to do with the anti-nuclear movement but in some ways, it has EVERYTHING to do with it, when you look at her reasons for quitting, look at why she's hanging up her shoes, and heading home to put her life back together after two years in the fight. Yesterday, I touched on the apathy of the anti-nuclear movement, have on various occassions touched on the fact that some of the old-timers are so entrenched in their own egos that we get NOWHERE. In her fairwell letter, Cindy Sheehan touches on the reality that more people care about who will become the next idol than care about how many more of our troops will die in the next few months while the Democrats (John Hall) we sent to Washington to end that war play political games.

In short, the Democrats have betrayed us every bit as much as the Republicans they replaced did while they were in office...there are just as many fact finding missions going on, and every time they do not want to face the wraith back in their home districts, the politicans are taking trips on our dime. They are betraying us with an Amnesty for 12-15 million illegals, they have sold us and the soldiers down the river by caving into the White House, and people like John Hall, Maurice Hinchey, Nita Lowey, Senator Shumer, and presidential hopeful Hilliary Clinton are selling us down the river on Indian Point...they are giving us nothing but LIP SERVICE on the ISA, and to prove it, go look the bills up, see how many co-signers their bills have, and what their status is. Both John Hall and Hilliary's Clinton show the same lack of forward momentum as their predecessors saw, because the politicians have SOLD US OUT...where is John Hall at on this issue, where was he PERSONALLY when we had the huge OPEN HOUSE back in April?

Cindy Sheehan is suffering the same burn out and frustration that most grassroots activist suffer after awhile...they give the movement all they have, and eventually, their head bruised and bloody from beating it up against the wall, they fade away disillussioned and tired.

How many folks talk privately about their disillussionment with the anti Indian Point movement, but will not cause waves publically, because they do not want to rock the boat, or destroy the unity within the movement...what good is that unity when NOTHING is being accomplished? A few of us individually, and/or as a group will file as intervenors, a few of us will file Petitions for Rulemaking in the hopes of effecting some small changes, but with the apathy out among the general members of the public, with IPSEC struggling to find consensus, and both Riverkeeper and Clearwater refusing to come out fully and completely against nuclear as it would be bad for fund raising, Indian Point is going to be relicensed, and that is fact.

Ask yourselves, do you want HIlliary Clinton spending all her time running for president, and raising money, or do you want her to start acting like OUR SENATOR? Do you want John Hall to worry about raising money, and trying to get re-elected, or do you want him to keep the various promises he made to us when we sent him to Washington? If you are going to throw your money and volunteer efforts behind Riverkeeper and Clearwater, don't you think it's time they actually laid out PUBLICALLY a cohesive plan of attack to stop the wrongful relicensing of Indian Point, rather than lamely tell us they are working with politicians to get and ISA...hello, that strategy is a dead pony. People like Mannajo need to check their egos at the door, and start letting some of the ideas forwarded by the new upstarts through. Further, if Riverkeeper and Clearwater are stopping IPSEC from reaching consensus, then perhaps it is time for those two organizations to LEAVE IPSEC so they can become and effective tool against Indian Point relicensing.

Closing Indian Point is going to take more than handing out pens, bumper stickers and match books at a yearly festival, and the time to become active is rapidly vanishing away into the ethers.

Anti-War Mom Gives Up on Peace Movement

Sheehan achieved national attention when she camped outside President Bush 's home in Crawford, Texas, throughout August 2005 to demand a meeting with the president over her son's death.

While Bush ignored her, the vigil made her one of the most prominent figures among opponents of the war.

But in a Web diary posted to the liberal online community Daily Kos on Monday, Sheehan said she was exhausted by the personal, financial and emotional toll of the past two years.

She wrote that she is disillusioned by the failure of Democratic politicians to bring the unpopular war to an end and tired of a peace movement she said "often puts personal egos above peace and human life."

Casey Sheehan, a 24-year-old Army specialist, was killed in an April 2004 battle in Baghdad . His death prompted his mother to found Gold Star Families for Peace.

But in Monday's 1,200-word letter, titled, "Good Riddance Attention Whore," Sheehan announced that her son "did indeed die for nothing."

"I have tried every since he died to make his sacrifice meaningful," she wrote. "Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics with human lives."

Do Groups Seeking To Close Indian Point Need A New Coalition?

Everyone knows the three main organizations *supposedly* involved in the Indian Point fight, the players that get all the money (in donations) to fight the good fight of pushing for closure of Entergy's Indian Point plant. IPSEC is the key group when you want to talk about a coalition of groups working towards a common goal, with Clearwater and Riverkeeper the big 501 3C's that hold the fund raisers, put up a good front, and ask you for a donation, encourage you to take out a yearly membership to support the cause...question is, are any of these groups doing anything of much good, are they really fighting to close down Indian Point, or just giving the public and press lip service? What have they really done to MOBILIZE THE MASSES for this fight?

Lisa Rainwater seems to be the go to woman when the press wants a quote from the anti Indian Point forces, and from what GNB can tell, she wants Indian Point closed, is sincere in her personal beliefs. However, is Riverkeeper anti-nuclear, do they, and will they openly call for the closure of all 104 aging, degradated nuclear reactors now operating in America? With Indian Point slated to submit their application for license renewal this year (which they did on April 30th) why wasn't Indian Point the number one item on Riverkeeper's 2007 agenda of important tasks for the year? Are they anti-nuclear, or just a NIMBY organization? In fact, Indian Point was not even on the list of the six most important items on Riverkeeper's to do list this year.

If Riverkeeper is to be a leader in our community's fight to close down Indian Point, if they are going to be seen as a protector of our Hudson River, of the nation's rivers, they need to do two things publicly. First, much like the Sierra Club has done, as an organization they must take an anti-nuclear stand, and secondly, they as an organization must publicly state their only goal as relates to Entergy, is closure of Indian Point. Riding the fence, playing both sides to the middle in the name of keeping the donations pouring in by hammering only on safety issues related to the Hudson River is inadequate.

Clearwater ranks right up there with Riverkeeper. Can someone explain to the GNB why Indian Point was kept off the agenda at last months meeting with unions on what to do about Global Warming? Can someone verify the rumor that Manna Jo removed Indian Point from the agenda because Eliot Spitzer wanted it that way, because he needed Indian Point out of the news? If Clearwater wants to shut down Indian Point, what is their battle strategy other than praying for Congressman John Hall's doomed to failure legislation seeking an ISA? Will Clearwater's new leader (soon to be voted in) be luke warm when it comes to the fight to close down Indian Point...it is GNB's understanding, that only one of the three people being considered is strongly anti Indian Point, willing to do anything it takes to stop relicensing.

Why did the board of Clearwater deny the citizens a chance to sign a Citizen Petition For Rulemaking at this past weekend's festival, and will history repeat itself at their BIG Clearwater Festival next month? Has the current board of Clearwater made the organization obsolete, nothing more than a group capable of holding social events, and bake sales? Are they so worried about GETTING ALONG with everyone, including the enemy, that they are no longer effective as and activist organization in protecting the environment and its citizens here in the Hudson Valley? The public in and around Indian Point should demand three things from Clearwater before they continue supporting them. First, a public proclamation from their board that Clearwater the organization is anti nuclear as an organization. Secondly, a proclamation calling for full and complete closure and Decommissioning of Indian Point reactors 1,2 and 3. Lastly, a detailed strategy plan to fight Entergy's License Renewal Application. These items should be out to the public before we support the rumored fund raising concert planned with Jackson Browne.

Then we have IPSEC. The problem as Green Nuclear Butterfly sees it with IPSEC is very simple. It is impossible to accomplish much of anything when your bylaws require consensus among ALL MEMBERS of the coalition before you can move forward with any action, sign onto any petition as a group. Even more discouraging, how many times is the dissenting voice in IPSEC Clearwater and/or Riverkeeper? The battle has been joined, the NRC's time clock for relicensing started on April 30th, and we need a coalition that can be decisive and move fast. Building consensus is not something that happens quickly, if at all. Foot soldiers in the fight to close down Indian Point cannot be deployed quickly if everyone is quibbling over small details and singular words, trying to find 100 percent consensus on each and every issue and petition.

No one is saying these groups in their time have not served their purpose...the question is, are any of them capable of doing the job now at hand? Can we rely on a Model T to halt relicensing, or do we need a new, sleek, streamlined coalition that can attack fast and often to slow down the Entergy relicensing juggernaut. Can an organization effectively fight the relicensing of Indian Point if they as an organization are not willing to publicly go on the record as being anti-nuclear, and fully in support of closure and decommissioning of the Indian Point facility and its three reactors? Green Nuclear Butterfly believes it is time for change, time for a new coalition if we are to stop Indian Point's attempt to win a 20 year license renewal. Calling for and ISA is a dead strategy, we need to move on to something else that just might work, and IPSEC, Riverkeeper and Clearwater all seem unwilling or unable to abandon that losing strategy.

We have 22-30 months from April 30th to stop Indian Points License Renewal Application. We are already behind in the fight, do not have our boats in the proverbial water and up to cruising speed. For this reason, Green Nuclear Butterfly believes all the various assorted groups in this fight need a new coalition, one with clear leadership that has the ability to make quick decisions in a timely manner, rather than having to wait for consensus among all members. NRC's GREAT WHITE LIE-We Are Safe From A Nuclear Incident

Will this man from DOE save your life, or let you die?

Indian Point, Entergy, Patrick Moore (traitor to Greenpeace), Christine Todd Whitman, CASEnergy, the nuclear industry, their lobbying arm NEI and the NRC are spending millions in public relations dollars to convince us that a Nuclear Renaissance if the way to solve Global Warming, and as a part of that great lie, they routinely tell us that we are safe. No IMMEDIATE danger, the odds of a terrorist attack, and/or a significant nuclear incident at a nuclear reactor site are so low as to make it hardly worth the risk of consideration. It's a nice little WHITE LIE told by people living in nice little homes far away from said aging and brittling reactors as they try to do what is best for big business, rather than do what is necessary to protect human health and the environment...either for money, or stupidity, it seems that even the wind industry (AWEA, ACE NY) has bought into this lie, and is prepared to sell their soul for a few pieces of silver and some S&H Green Stamps. The problem is, it is a lie, and the NRC knows it.

If as the NEI and the NRC would have us believe, nuclear reactors are so safe from attack, why is our government spending billions in protecting against an attack, and preparing our emergency responders for the worst? I'd encourage all of your to spend some time browsing the DOE's Oak Ridge Institutes REAC/TS site. If you spend a bit of time there, you'll find some rather disturbing information that should make you think three or four times about the safety of reactor sites.

REAC/TS opening statement of purpose got my attention right away:

The REAC/TS mission for DOE is two-fold:

Provide 24/7 availability to deploy and provide emergency medical services at incidents involving radiation anywhere in the world.

Provide advice and consultation on radiation emergency medicine from its Oak Ridge, Tenn., headquarters or at the scene of an incident.

Additionally:

REAC/TS is identified in Section 501 of the Homeland Security Act of 2002 as a response organization and member of DOE's Nuclear Incident Response Team.

REAC/TS is identified in DOE Order 5530 as the organization that provides medical assistance to DOE's Accident Response Group and the Federal Radiological Monitoring and Assessment Center (FRMAC).

This does not sound like a group who thinks the likelihood of an attack and/or nuclear incident is slim to none. Instead, it sounds like they think there is a very good chance of such and event. It describes its response teams as follows:

REAC/TS maintains specialized response teams to ensure our readiness to respond. Each team consists of a physician, nurse/paramedic, and a health physicist—all cross-trained in the details of managing a radiation emergency.

They finish off their introduction with a very alarming note that their teams were deployed immediately after 9/11 so they were ready to deal with further attacks that might involve nuclear materials. If as the NRC states,the likelihood of a terrorist attack is so small, then why did DOE immediately deploy these teams to New York, and other areas of the nation?

REAC/TS was also immediately deployed following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States as part of DOE's Consequence Management Response Team. The team stood ready to respond in the event that additional terrorist acts immediately following Sept. 11 involving nuclear materials.

Once you have read through this introduction, suggest you spend some time reading the Hospital Triage in the First 24 Hours After a Nuclear or Radiological Disaster pdf file. This document is NOT for the faint of heart. From the get go, REAC/TS dispels the nuclear industry claim that a nuclear event and/or incident is unlikely with this statement:

Sadly, today’s international environment is such that the real possibility exists that emergency department personnel might have to deal with not just one or two victims of a radiation accident, but overwhelming numbers injured in a malevolent act. Table 1 provides information about types of catastrophes involving radiological or nuclear materials.

...If radioactive atoms enter cells, they are said to be “incorporated.” As long as radioactive materials are on or in a person, the person is being irradiated. Contamination does not cause symptoms, unless the contaminants are corrosive, toxic, or thermally hot. However, note that fission product fallout (i.e., from a nuclear weapon or nuclear reactor core damage) should be brushed off the skin and clothing as soon as possible, since it can be highly radioactive. Caregivers should use strict isolation precautions (including wearing cap, mask, gown, shoe covers, and double gloves) when handling contaminated victims, and gloves should be changed frequently to avoid cross contamination.

Further, this document lays bare the NRC lie that the aftermath of such and event would be a nice neat and orderly evacuation plan. Instead, this document paints a picture of chaos,death, and some of us being left unattended medically, sentencing us to a slow agonizing death of cancer. Here are a few high lights:

1. Except for victims of serious trauma, decontamination can be
accomplished prior to admission to hospital emergency care. Uninjured individuals do
not require hospitalization unless they are vomiting, have diarrhea, or have conventional reasons for seeking emergency care.

2. During
the first 24 hours, those who are not injured (but are suspected of being internally
contaminated) should be advised to seek assistance from public health authorities. Public health authorities may recommend excreta collection and/or lung or whole body counts.

3. Request extra security for the emergency department. Be aware that a terrorist could be among the victims. Request police assistance for traffic and crowd control, assistance with gathering evidence, etc.

4. Patients who are incapacitated because of vomiting, diarrhea or shock might be
contaminated on arrival at the hospital. Removal of clothing and decontamination should be accomplished at the earliest opportunity.

5. If there is a history of loss of consciousness or evidence of cerebral edema or other CNS abnormality not due to physical trauma or stress, with a history of early vomiting (within minutes) and diarrhea, the victim’s dose is likely greater than 15 Gray. Long term survival is unlikely, since multiorgan failure will ensue.

6. Radiation does not cause immediate life-threatening problems. Serious injury
takes priority over concerns about contamination. (So what if being left untreated sentences you to a slow death from cancer.)

7. Trauma or burn victims in serious or critical condition after initial stabilization, who have also been determined to be significantly irradiated (based on accident history, history of early vomiting, diarrhea, early elevated temperature, erythema, elevated serum amylase in first 24 hours)should be given palliative/compassionate care. (In short, you are DEAD, and will not even get a chance to say goodbye to your family.)

8. However, with the real threat of nuclear/radiological terrorism, an emergency department staff may be overwhelmed by individuals requiring or seeking medical attention after a malevolent act.

Now, how vital,safe and secure do you really think Entergy's failing reactors are? How secure in Indian Point's evacuation plan are you now. Remember, the hardest hit in a nuclear reactor incident and/or terrorist attack will be A) the disabled,B) your CHILDREN, and C) the elderly (Grandma and Grandpa). Ask yourselves, "Do you really want to risk another 20 years of Indian Point?" If not, you have to plug in,have to join the growing number of activists that will do whatever it takes to shut this plant down.

April 26 ~ Join GNB at the NRC Annual Open House in Peekskill

The NRC is hosting their Annual Indian Point Assessment Review and Open House on April 26th, at Colonial Terrace, 119 Oregon Road, Peekskill, NY, the same Cortland Manor where John Hall was sworn in as Rockland County's new Congressman, and where Entergy co-hosted the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce's 2007 Business Expo.

Green Nuclear Butterfly requested and obtained from the NRC an exhibitor's table during the open house segment of the event to hand out literature from the anti-Indian Point consituency.

The open house segment will be held from 2:30 PM to 6:30 PM.

The public meeting segment is from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM.

This is the plan, to say that climate change is caused by carbon emissions... and nuclear has no carbon emissions. So we have to go to more nuclear for power.

This is now as plain as day... a whole plan... and tranparently obvious, once one opens the mind to see... probably in the works for years.

France has their reprocessing plant... the fallout from this goes over East to the Alps, goes down into Lake Leman when the ice melts, and some say is responsible for very high rates of cancer around Geneva.

The reprocessing plant in England, Sellafield, across the water from Dublin, releases effluent into the water, it is absorbed by the seaweed, and this seaweed is used on croplands, and Dublin has Very high rates of cancer....

Everything is very grave as it is, and to consider building MORE Nuke plants is so insane it is impossible to comprehend WHAT sort of thinking and goal is behind it.

I heard someone say yesterday, don't know if its true, he heard on the news that there are plans to impose a "climate change tax" on Americans, that this tax would go partly to fund more nuclear power plants... !!!

About Europe again, it seems, as far as we can comprehend from what is stated, that a few weeks ago, there was a decision to allocate for the future that 20% of energy should be from "Green" energy, that is from alternative energies.

And then the revised list of "green" alternative energies included nuclear power! Very quietly stated.

The basis being that nuclear power does NOT release carbon dioxide emissions, which has been determined to be the CAUSE of climate change...

All this done very smoothly. And seemingly valid. Except, that it is not valid... in any sense.

Going back to the topic of the waste from nuclear power production. WHERE are we going to put it?

There is not now or nor will there be in the future any way to manage long term storage... Only can be managed with double talk.

IF we had the money already spent on exploring Yucca Mountain as a rad waste repository, we could have built wind and solar enough for the whole country !!!

There are choices being made, and they are not made with consideration of the health of present and future humans...

The oxygen level is going down; trees themselves absorb radiaoctive elements and are released when you have a fire in your fireplace.

Our bones contain strontium 90 which radiates into the bone marrow, an essential aspect of the immune system.

The common sense admonition to "make every decision with consideration of the seventh generation" has been shred in the paper shredder.

Indian Point 3 reactor shut down after fire, explosion

BUCHANAN - An explosion and fire in the transformer yard at the Indian Point nuclear power complex today led to the shutdown of the Indian Point 3 reactor, but officials said the fire was quickly extinguished with no impact on public health and safety.

The incident was reported at around 11:15 a.m. Shortly after noon, Michael Slobodien, a director of emergency planning for Entergy Nuclear Northeast, which owns and operates the plant, said the facility was stable and under control.

"Between the transformer and the reactor, there's a huge concrete structure," he said.

But the unplanned shutdown, the second this week, may push the plant's safety rating to white from green, the safest of four operational categories.

Entergy has declared a "notice of unusual events," the lowest of four emergency classifications in the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, with the state and regional counties. An investigation has been launched to determine what caused the fire and what kind of damage.

"It's too early at this point," Slobodien said.

The Entergy declaration prompted Westchester County to open its emergency operation center at the Transportation Management Center in Hawthorne. Officials plan a press briefing there early this afternoon.

The Verplanck Fire Department responded to the scene this morning, but they were told they were not needed because the facility's internal brigade handled the situation.

Buchanan Mayor Dan O'Neill said he was not concerned about the fact that the fire had taken place at the nuclear facility.

"Unfortunately, these things happen when you're making electricity," he said. "It could happen at any type of power plant. ... This had nothing to do with nuclear power, it had to do with making electricity."

Indian Point 3 had returned to service Saturday, following a scheduled 24-day refueling outage when workers replaced 96 of the 193 fuel assemblies used during operation.

Then, a steam generator problem prompted workers to manually shut down the plant early Tuesday morning, but no release of radiation was reported and the plant was restarted less than 24 hours later.

Coming up from a re-start after that unplanned shutdown, Indian Point 3 was at about 90 percent capacity when today's fire broke out, officials said.

The plant, which went online 31 years ago this week, had two unplanned shutdowns in 2006, according to Nuclear Regulatory Commission records.

On Monday, 123 of the 150 new emergency-warning sirens failed to successfully complete an operational test. The sirens are required to be ready to go by a week from Sunday. It was not known immediately if the existing siren system sounded today or if it was supposed to.

Marilyn Elie of WestCAN spoke with Richard Backley at the NRC and published this on the indianpointsec list:

It is transformer 31 that caught on fire. At his time they do not know the extent of the damage and it is being investigated. "At this time we don't know what route the company will take in either repairing or replacing the transformer." This is one of two transformers. Evidently it is possible to operate with one, if power is reduced.

I think that this is the same transformer that was a problem several years ago when a grounds keeper was electrocuted. It was entered into the corrective action matriix then. I asked Backley for more information about this and will keep you posted. This unplanned shut down should take Unit 3 out of the white caegory and put it squarely in the green.

The plant uses part of the electricity they produce for internal purposes. Backley claims that emergency systems are not comprised and that the plant is running on electricity from the switch yard. He said that first responders were not notified promptly because the firewas extinguished on site. First responders wiere not notified until 12:15.

There is no emergency event notification on the NRC web site yet which is odd. A reactor in MO, Calloway, had a transformer fire yesterday morning and it was posted right away even though the plant was already in shut down. Why not Indian Point? Also, it was hard to get information. It is entirely possible that there is more here than meets the eye - at least so far. Stay tuned...

Entergy Business Expo Demo Cancelled, on account of burn out!

Well, it looks like Entergy dodged a bullet this morning... Sherwood and I decided to bow out of our commitment to attend the Entergy sponsored 2007 Business Expo tomorrow.

There are a few reasons for this... The main one being Sherwood is in great pain from his broken arm... he explained something about pinched nerve endings hurting real bad... I empathize.

The other is I live in Weston, CT as many of you know, and the trek back and forth from Peekskill has taken its toll on my resource. Since there hasn't been any real visible interest from anti-nuclear residents in Peekskill to come out in support of Sherwood and I for this action, I felt we did what we could. It's now up to the people of surrounding communities to take matters in their own hands. Time to realize you're brow beaten and pick up your pitch forks guys! Honestly!

If you are not able to do this, if the good people of Rockland and Westchester county, do not see the necessity to attend a Business Expo sponsored by Entergy to voice their opposition to the unwanted business Entergy brings to their community, I am at a loss as to what more I can do. Entergy wins by default, you are letting them win... no Independent Safety Assessment will shut down this plant... it's just a shell game to them.

So, my schedule has suddenly gotten extremely busy, with three separate PR events I have committed helping around the country, which stand to do more long term to benefit our fight to shut down Indian Point than protesting this little business expo could if nobody shows up for it.

Since everybody seems to be too busy to come out for this, well so am I.

There are other things Sherwood and I are planning that will have much more impact and consequence. Loose lips sink ships. We're not giving up, just taking a breather, recharging our batteries. We've been at this none stop for nearly three months, with little or no support from the peanut gallery, criticism from all sides for our tactics... while behind the scenes, off the record, people come up to say keep up the good work. It's wonderful, but where's the $$$ you know? Sherwood and I are not made of cash.

There comes a time when you either put up or shut up. So if all the anti-nuclear funds goes to organizations who clock in 9 to 5 rather than see this as a call to arms... you do the math... where would your money be better spent? With us constantly doing research, raising hell, driving nails in... or the same old organizations playing it safe, doing business as usual? Organizations who at the flip of a hat, if they really wanted to, could put a hundred people or more at any one place to protest the Entergy NorthEast LLC.

Bottom line, Robert Kennedy Jr. is just a big fat pussy!

Anyone who had intended to attend, please don't let this sudden running out of steam by your two unpaid hired guns discourage you from doing something on your own... We in fact would very much like to get a report from the Expo. We'll post it here.

Indian Point-The Lowest Hanging Fruit

Many of our readers here on Green Nuclear Butterfly have been watching the B movie flame war fizzling out over on the IPSEC list between our own Royce Penstinger of the acid tongue, my never ending attack, and Mark Jacobs reknowned Hall Monitor of the slow moving IPSEC serve list...GOD forbid the scroll rate gets out of control over there, he might lose the knitting crowd. Since John Hall was elected to Congress, between my Congressman John Hall blog, the once famous but now dormant Washington Scandals blog, and here I seem to have pissed off and/or alienated almost everyone but the Pope, and given half a chance, sure I could upset the Vatican as well.

Most people don't seem to get me, or perhaps they don't understand my agenda, are confused on why I worked so hard to get John Hall elected, only to seemingly TURN ON HIM, why I seem to go to such great extremes to bitch slap such revered groups as Riverkeeper, Clearwater, IPSEC or even Greenpeace for their dismal efforts where Indian Point is concerned. Simply stated, everyone of them are asleep at the wheel, and I cannot let a perfect storm that could stop the relicensing of Indian Point be squandered away through inaction and stupidity.

I asked Mark Jacobs to spell out the IPSEC plan to close Indian Point, challenged him to stand up and lead the coalition...His response was to say everyone was doing what they could. Fair enough, but here is a news flash for everyone....The current stategies deployed by those opposing relicensing aging, brittle reactors is FAILING MISERABLY. That is not a knock, it is a fact...the deck has been stacked against us, as was witnessed in a speech this week from a retiring NRC Commissioner who confidently boosted that 50 reactors were already relicensed for 20 more years, and within a couple more years, all 103 reactors will be relicensed....BOOSTING OF A PERFECT GAME OF THAT MAGNITUDE IS PROOF POSITIVE THE GAME IS FIXED.

It is time to throw out the rule book, get down and dirty in a street brawl...enter Indian Point, the lowest hanging fruit as Michele Boyd of Public Citizen describes these two failing Entergy reactors on the Hudson River, and the perfect storm that will allow us (Anti-relicensing groups) to cull them from the herd, close them down and in the process, greatly damage the GNEP Nuclear Renaissance juggernaut that is leading the United States and the world down the road of good intentions to hell.

I have a plan, or as Arlo Guthrie once said in his song about the pickle, a vision burnt across my mind...I don't want a reactor and its leaking spent fuel pools sitting on the Hudson. We need a movement! The ANTI ENTERGY, CLOSE INDIAN POINT MOVEMENT, and all 21 million people living within 50 miles of these nuclear time bombs have to do to join, is GET INVOLVED, put their hearts, time and a few bucks into making a dream a reality...CLOSING THE INDIAN POINT REACTORS.

STOP ROLLING YOUR EYES FOR A FEW MINUTES, STOP YOUR LAUGHING AND GUFFAWING LONG ENOUGH TO FINISH THIS ARTCLE, AND MAYBE, JUST MAYBE YOU'LL REALIZE MY PLAN, MY DREAM IS NOT SO FAR FETCHED.

Why the Indian Point reactors and Entergy are the perfect battle for the anti relicensing folks, why every angry reactor host community should join in our battle.

1. Entergy currently is one of the two BIG BOYS on the nuclear block. Culling out Indian Point from their fleet and forcing them into closure would be enough of a blow to possibly force Entergy into a situation of having to sell its remaining reactors, and get out of the nuclear end of the energy business. New reactor owners mean new public hearings for license transfer, which means second bites at some of the apples for our side.

2. The Indian Point reactors have a horrid safety record, are leaking strontium and tritium into the Hudson River, and after 9/11 no one can argue that they are the reactors most vulnerable to terrorist attack.

How can we win the fight to shut down these ticking time bombs?

1. First, population numbers are on our side...21 million people live within the 50 mile circle of death around Indian Point. In short, wake up the masses, get them involved, and half our battle is done.

2. We can out spend, Entergy, the NRC and NEI combined if our hearts are in this fight! I can hear the naysayers now claiming I am insane....think for a minute folks! We have 21 million people living within 50 miles of Indian Point! A one dollar donation from each one of them is $21 million dollars! The NEI's entire budget for their PR for the entire nuclear industry is $8 million.

Can you imagine if every one of those 21 million people donated just $10 dollars to the cause of closing down Indian Point? That's $210 million dollars, over half of Entergy's entire profit picture from everything they earned in 2006. Now, can you imagine if everyone of those 21 million people were willing to donate $100 dollars a year towards closing down Indian Point and bringing in safe renewable energy to our region? That's $2.1 BILLION dollars, or almost three times the $841 million dollar NRC budget approved by Congress for 2007! YES, WE HAVE THE POWER TO OUT SPEND THEM, OUT LAWYER THEM, AND OUT ADVERTISE/PROPAGANDA THEM...this is what a movement is about!

3. We have local government on our side in this...which would make protests, sit ins and acts of civil disobedience far easier. We have some heavy hitters nationally, and the timing for holding their feet to the fire on this issue could not be better with next year being a presidential election year.

4. This kind of a movement WOULD CATCH THE ATTENTION of both national and international press, and in doing so bring the horrid truth of the 103 aging, failing reactors front and center, and under the media microscope.

5. Let's not forget John Hall in all this...he has the ability to bring the musicians back into this fight, has the ability to give Pete Seeger the gift of seeing the relics that are the Indian Point Reactors closed down and decommissioned.

Call me Don Quixote tilting at reactors on the Hudson, but this radical idea can work. We want the Indian Point Reactors shut down, we want to get the anti relicensing team on the scoreboard in a huge way, and we can do it if everyone will get involved in the Green Nuclear Butterfly's Close Down Indian Point Movement/Coalition.

Remember those good old days when we believed? Want to bring them back again, and once again know the sweet taste of victory against overwhelming odds? Then join us, and do Arlo proud in this new movement. Together we can use our ladders to harvest Entergy's lowest hanging fruit, Indian Point reactors 2 and 3.

Green Nuclear Butterfly supports Congressman John Hall, who as a member of Musicians United for Safe Energy, co-wrote the anthem "Power", in his effort to open a renewable energy center on the land now occupied by Entergy. John J. Curran, Peekskill's official city historian, president of the Peekskill Museum, told GNB that a coalition of Native Americans tribes want to buy back the land on which Indian Point sits!

Entergy has NOT been a good neighbor. Their Indian Point facility is contaminating surrounding waters, animal and plant life with radioactive isotopes. Cancer rates around Indian Point are documented much higher than normal. Yet, Senator Hillary Clinton, who sits on the board of directors at Cornell University's Program on Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors, still has not officially associated the rise in breast cancer rates with the nuclear industry's reign of radioactive terror.

We urge you to contact the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce, write to them, call them... explain to them that Entergy is no longer welcome in this community. That the people of Rockland County have spoken by electing John Hall as their Congressman. That the people of Peekskill want Entergy out of its chamber of commerce, as well as out of the Paramount Center.

Green Nuclear Butterfly will be handing out literature about the real dangers of Indian Point and the risk of aging nuclear reactors at the 2007 Business Expo, as well as educating the community about alternative sources of investment, business opportunities and capital available to the region which GNB and Rock The Reactors are developing with executives from HSBC's sustainable investment division.

The best and easiest way to close down Indian Point, is to quietly, gently, kindly escort Entergy outside the Peekskill city limits, bid them fairwell, and a good day.

Let's have LESS CUTE, and more serious BALL BUSTING talk about protests and civil disobedience...you are CUTE Manna, but cute rots the brain while accomplishing little of serious merit.

OH MY FREAKING GAWD...it's Monday night, and I am just now getting around to putting my pen to work on Friday's BIG EVENT that was not so BIG, but which Clearwater will swear was the proverbial TIPPING POINT in closing down Indian Point...yeah, for sure and a big whatever there Manna...curious here....were you ever a member of the Glee/Pep Club? OK, never mind and scratch that.

First big startling news...Andrew Spano made NO APPEARANCE at this monumental Round Table discussion. In short, the man with a plan, Mr. Robo Caller himself is pinning his hopes on jumping through the NRC's LEGAL HOOPS, and it is NOT GOING TO WORK. Andy, you really need to educate yourself on the NRC/DOE/GNEP Nuclear 2010 plan...call me, we'll do lunch at my house and I'll fill you in on what you are too important to bother learning.

Congressman John Hall was at Manna/Clearwater's Round Table discussion, and looking anything but Congressional...he even borrowed a line from the campaign trail used by another Congressman...get a new writer there John! Now supposed, John Hall had a private meeting in his Washington office with one Commissioner Kline from the NRC, and said commissioner let it be known that the NRC has no intention whatsoever of denying Indian Point a license for both their reactors on the Hudson...curious John Hall, have you heard of the word collusion, and are you by chance thinking RICO LAW SUIT? He trotted out Maurice Hinchey's tired legislation that he introduced in Congress as his own a few weeks ago, and told us it was going to pass...no, your bill will not pass Congressman John Hall, and it is sad to see you more concerned with getting re-elected than doing your job...so nice too to see you stayed around for the evening session when REAL CITIZENS would be there! (Only kidding folks, he bailed leaving behind a harried staffer as he headed into New York City for and evening fund raising party.)

The punching bag of the day award has to go to Barbara Youngberg with the New York DEC...but then, hardly a wonder since she freely admitted that DEC could take Entergy into court on the leaks, but instead felt they could get more accomplished working with/cooperating with the company...ARE YOU NUTS? The audience was/is not happy, and let her know it, as did more than a few voices on the panel including self important Mark Jacobs who loves to hear himself wax poetic, Lisa Rainwater who did a very good job of looking hot and sultry, but seemed lacking of substance when the time counted...I was though impressed with Susan Shapiro who a couple of times serious nailed the members of the regulatory up on stage.

BOTTOM LINE...the leaks, and thus this round table DO NOT MATTER...you see, if you bother following the NRC's game plan, the spent fuel pools, and thus the leaks are NOT UP FOR DISCUSSION in the license renewal application, amount to an issue we cannot even bring up.

SO...when can we expect, Clearwater, Riverkeeper, IPSEC and the various local governments to get a CLUE, and begin taking REAL STEPS to close down Indian Point? We have already learned that Governor Elliot Spitzer is so full of shit his eyes are brown, and that he intends to SELL US OUT...read the fine print.

1) He took money more than once from an ENTERGY PAC, and

2) has a caveat in his rhetoric that amounts to giving ENTERGY a green light to relicense...he expects that ANTI INDIAN POINT Folks to FIRST REPLACE the power from Indian Point...uhhhh....excuse me Mr. Elliot, if that was/is your plan, new alternatives should have been being introduced YEARS AGO...bottom line Governor...you are an asshole and a hypocrite, and Indian Point, the risk it poses to our community are simply too GREAT, and the reactors have to be closed, even if you have to order our National Guard to do so...GET IT THERE SPITZER BOY? DOE, NRC and ENTERGY are not going to let these reactors go without a fight, and it might take ARMED FORCES ordered onto the sight to bring about the closing of these two failing plants, so get your pen ready.

Some interesting factoids on Indian Point:

1. It sits atop FRACTURED Bedrock.

2. The various regulatory agencies in charge of Indian Point allow it to LEGALLY dump over 10 MILLION gallons of radioactively contaminated water into the Hudson each year...oh, and the air as well, lets not forget the air.

3. We have an invisible underground radioative Plumb at Indian Point...isn't that special?

4. Indian Points efforts to stop the leaks in the spent fuel pools are EXPERIMENTAL at best, and so far do not seem to be working.

5. All regulatory agencies involved at Indian Point admitted that none of the testing at these failing reactors is EXTENSIVE, nor adequate, but justified it by saying Entergy has assured them they CANNOT AFFORD more testing....uhhhh....last I looked, last year saw record profits for ENTERGY, so how can they not afford adequate testing?

I give Manna and Clearwater a passing grade for their effort. I give IPSEC, Riverkeeper and Clearwater FAILING GRADES for wasting a lot of effort and money hosting an even on LEAKS that are not even eligible for inclusion in NRC's review of the the relicense renewal application. Sorry guys, but the time has come to have REAL DISCUSSION about what it will take to CLOSE DOWN THE REACTORS, and you had best include protests, sit ins and civil disobedience on that discussion list when you are finally ready to have talks about CLOSURE, instead of LEAKS.
