Why We Should Give Edwards A Closer Look

There are a whole lot of important issues in the upcoming 2008 election cycle, but none more important than Global Warming, and how we go about trying to solve it. That makes energy perhaps the most important issue in the campaign. That being said, we need to take a look at the three front runners for the Democratic Ticket (Clinton, Obama and Edwards). Of the three, both Clinton and Obama are hedging their bets publicly, riding the proverbial fence in a non committal way. Privately, they are lapping up the generosity of the Pro-Nuclear donors, with Hillary even taking money from Entergy attorneys.

Edwards on the other hand has come out and stated in no uncertain terms that he is OPPOSED to nuclear energy as a solution to Global Warming. That in and of itself makes him a candidate that we need to give a second look too, and perhaps even a third or fourth look. Unless Hillary Clinton is willing to return ALL NUCLEAR TAINTED Campaign Funds, and stand up on the Anti Nuclear side of the equation, the citizens of Connecticut, New Jersey, Vermont and New York should REJECT HER.

More on that ALL Nuclear Navy bill...

Artwork by Howie Green

(This is in fact a post I made to the IPSEC list serv in response to FUSE USA board members shooting the messenger...i.e. ME... Since this post was not allowed through, and since nobody has volunteered to tell me who in fact "monitors" the IPSEC list, playing God as to who gets to speak and who gets shut out, I am posting my reply here... Kucinich and Ron Paul did not... They stuck to their guns... and millions on MySpace now support them...

Yes Ron Paul is PRO-Nuclear, but he's also smart enough to know putting hundreds more nuclear vessels on the seven seas, is NOT the brightest idea in the world!

They are the minority voices of reason left in Congress... a minority perhaps, but expressing the strong sentiments of the rest of the world... who the US has bullied into submission... I KNOW Ozzy's heart, OK? Look what you people have done to him!!! These guys were my friends, my heroes, before you sucked them into your pathetic universe of Lamborghinis, cribs and cocaine haze!

That's why I went to Woodstock, to "remind" everyone up there what it was all about... did anybody from Ipsec, Riverkeeper or Clearwater bother to support the Rock The Reactors event at the Colony? NO! How sad...

As the ice melts... and Mexico drowns...
and soon... hundreds of nuclear power plants will flood...
the oceans will become a radioactive wasteland...
Is that the future you want for your children?
and you're blaming Green Nuclear Butterfly?
Wake up people... get off your behind...
DO SOMETHING for the love of all that's divine...
Read Shirley MacLaine's new book...
Seek a new perspective...
Go ask the official Peekskill historian
what's "really" going on in your Sleepy Hollow towns!

How about attending a Greendrinks in Manhattan once in awhile?
Get out of your suburb!
Renew your taste for the highlife.
Recruit some new blood...
Otherwise you're going to have Indian Point
to bitch about for another 40 years...
unless an accident or the radiation
gets to your bone marrow first!

We're planning the overthrow of an old regime.
What are YOU doing?
We're making darn sure all these contentions lead to a flamboyant court case...
so the fate of Indian Point can be tried in the court of public opinion,
because that's the ONLY place our side, OUR side, has a chance to win!

And if John Hall can't understand that, he's working the wrong side of the street.
And he's fair game.
He and I have a deal, I will hold him up to it!

Nuke Free Founders discuss Pro-Nuke Presidential Candidates

Jackson Browne Backs Off Support for Pro-Nuke Obama

October 23, 2007

On Capitol Hill today, there was a press conference.

Three members of Congress – Ed Markey (D-Massachusetts), John Hall (D-New York), and Shelley Berkley (D-Nevada) – were there.

Activists like Harvey Wasserman and David Fenton – were there.

And musicians including Hall, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and Graham Nash – who were among the organizers, with Wasserman, of the 1979 No Nukes Concerts in Madison Square Garden, which played a prominent role in galvanizing citizen energy against nuclear power – were there.

Environmental leaders from NRDC, Greenpeace, U.S. PIRG, Public Citizen, Sierra Club, the Environmental Working Group, the League of Conservation Voters, among others – were there.
They made arguments against pending legislation that will grant massive loan guarantees to nuclear power companies to build new reactors.

They made statements about how nuclear power is uneconomical, poses big fat targets for terrorists, and produces thousands of tons of high-level radioactive waste.

Wasserman and the musicians have put up a sleek web site – nukefree.org.

But when push comes to shove, we are talking Democrats here.

And so when the group of them were asked – well, what if the Democrats nominate a pro-nuclear Presidential candidate like Senator Hillary Clinton (D-New York) or Senator Barack Obama (D-Illinois) – will you bolt the party, withhold support, endorse an anti-nuke third party candidate? – no one said yes.

Wasserman didn’t say anything.

Fenton didn’t say anything.

The environmental leaders didn’t say anything.

Markey was quiet.

Berkley was gone.

Hall gave a disingenuous answer.

“I don’t believe that Senator Clinton or Senator Obama are hard and fast pro-nuke candidates,” Hall said. “I think they are both are considering the options and need to have all of the information. They certainly have plenty of information. But they are persuadable. This is an educational experiment.”

Jackson Browne was more forthcoming.

Browne said that he initially came out in support of Obama, but then learned of Obama’s support for nuclear power.

At a recent presidential debate, Edwards came out strongly opposed to nuclear power.
At the same debate, Obama said “we should explore nuclear power as part of the energy mix.”
“It gave me pause to reconsider my support for him,” Browne said. “I’m hoping to talk to him about it. I know that (John) Edwards came out against it. And that interested me a great deal.”
Browne said he does believe that the nuclear power issue will have an impact on how people vote next year.

At a campaign event in South Carolina earlier this year, Clinton also endorsed nuclear power.
“I think nuclear power has to be part of our energy solution,” Clinton said. “I don’t have any preconceived opposition. I just want to be sure we do it right. . . Obviously, it is a tremendous source of energy. We get about 20 percent of our energy from nuclear power in our country. A lot of people don’t realize that. Other countries like France get much, much more. We do have to look at it, because it doesn’t put greenhouse gas emissions into the air. But we have to make sure it is done as safely as possible.”

The organizers of nukefree.org are seeking to defeat legislation that would, as Markey put it, hijack clean energy legislation “and turn it into an Automatic Teller Machine for an industry that is supposed to be standing on its own.”“The nuclear industry thinks the problem of global warming is an opportunity to skip the normal process of seeking investors and instead seek out the Federal Treasury,” Markey said.

Maria Sharapova plans trip back to Chernobyl

Maria Sharapova plans 1st trip back to Chernobyl since family fled
By BETH HARRIS
August 13, 2007
CARSON, Calif. (AP) -- Maria Sharapova travels the world as the highest-paid female athlete, cocooning in fancy hotels, dining at swanky restaurants and indulging her love of shoes.
Yet there's one place the 20-year-old tennis superstar's journeys have never taken her -- the region devastated 21 years ago by the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster.
Sharapova's mother, Yelena, was pregnant with her only child when the plant in Ukraine exploded and spewed radioactive clouds over the western Soviet Union and northern Europe.
"A lot of families were moving, but not a lot of them could because they didn't really know where to go," Sharapova told The Associated Press. "My mom's dad happened to be working in Siberia, so that's why we had a sense of direction."
Sharapova's father, Yuri, and her mother fled the city of Gomel in Belarus -- about 80 miles north of Chernobyl -- shortly before she was born in Nyagan, Siberia.
Gomel was one of the areas most affected by radiation. Sharapova said she still has family there, including grandparents.
Sharapova plans to visit Chernobyl as a United Nations goodwill ambassador, perhaps after Wimbledon next July.
"It's in the beginning stages of what exactly I'm going to be doing," she said. "But I want to visit the facilities that they're building right now for the children -- computer labs and hospitals."
Sharapova started hitting tennis balls at age 4. Two years later, she was discovered by Martina Navratilova at a Moscow exhibition. At 9, Sharapova and her father moved to Florida, beginning a two-year separation from her mother because of visa restrictions and limited finances.
She's never forgotten her roots.
In 2004, Sharapova won the season-ending WTA Championships and received a car worth more than $56,000. She donated the money to those affected by the Russian school hostage crisis in Beslan in which 334 people died, more than half of them children.
In February, when Sharapova was appointed an ambassador for the U.N. Development Program, she donated $100,000 to help recovery in the Chernobyl region.
Goodwill ambassadors try to draw attention to the plight of some of the world's poorest spots. Sharapova, who has earned more than $9 million in career prize money, has a two-year contract with the UNDP that pays her a symbolic salary of $1 a year. Goodwill ambassadors pay their own way on trips.
"They wanted me to work with them because they felt like people in those areas didn't really feel like they had a chance to survive," Sharapova said. "They wanted me to help raise the awareness that by building schools, hospitals, cleaning the air that there is pride and a side they can head towards instead of thinking all those negative things."
Her trip to Chernobyl will last just a few days.
"Unfortunately, I have about 28 days a year for the work that I do and for the sponsors, for the photo shoots and the visits," she said. "Time is very, very limited."
Sharapova won her first title of the season a week ago near San Diego. During the tournament, she met with a group of Russian children visiting the United States.
Their trip was sponsored by The Children of Chernobyl, a nonprofit group that brings healthy children from Belarus between ages 8 and 12 to America for a six-to-eight week visit. They are placed with host families and the children receive free medical, dental and eye care treatment.
Upon meeting Sharapova, some of the families asked what advice she could give the children.
"It's tough because most of them don't have any parents, and what's really helped me in my life was having my mom and dad be so supportive and around me," she said.
Despite her Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles and No. 2 world ranking, Sharapova didn't expect the children to know who she was.
"They had all these questions lined up for me. The kids are pretty young and the questions they were asking me were so mature and so beyond their years," she said. "This young kid asked me how I wanted to raise my children. I was like, 'Geez, you're a kid yourself.' It was very strange."'
The children knew only rudimentary English phrases, like 'How are you?,' so they questioned her in Russian and Sharapova responded in her native language.
Hearing the kids squeal about their trip to Sea World brought back memories. As sophisticated as Sharapova comes off in photo spreads and on red carpets, she says she acts like a kid away from the court and cameras.
"I still love things that you don't even need to pay for," she said. "Going to the beach and being around five of your friends and having a good time means so much more than going out and spending hundreds of dollars. It did make me realize that, 'Wow, all these small things are making them happy."'
Sharapova is to begin her U.S. Open title defense Aug. 27. She withdrew from the semifinals of last week's tournament in Carson because of a leg injury. She said she plans to compete for another seven years.
"I have so many other things in my life that I want to try and do," she said, ticking off marriage and children among her goals. "I'd love to open a tennis school for children in my hometown of Sochi."
Sharapova said she recently read a book about Africa, and it, along with her charity work, has helped expand her world of forehands and backhands.
"If you're able to help some people and make them smile and make them realize that life is good," she said, "then that's worth so much more than buying a pair of shoes."

Benny Zable Climbs Monteverde

I picked up Australian anti-nuclear performance artist Benny Zable at the Peekskill train station on Sunday morning. We headed off to the Bear Mountain Powwow in Harriman State Park to deliver a message from Harold One Feather who is attending the Southeast Convergence for Climate Action before coming up North to join the new FUSA USA coalition.

Benny took his peaceful earth flag inside the prayer circle... while I met some wonderful people, like Tchin and Sealy... and discovered the book Indian Tribes of the Hudson's River published by Hope Farm Press & Bookshop in Saugerties, NY.

We got lost a few times on the way there and back... all these tall trees, all these winding roads... but we made it back in time to meet up with an artist/documentary film maker who has asked for anonymity and Heyoka magazine publisher John LeKay at the Peekskill Coffeehouse. Sherwood Martinelli, of Green Nuclear Butterfly, joined us.

The Rock The Reactors poster I had placed in the window earlier in the day had been pulled down, and the flyers I had left by the door were all gone. We suspect friends of Entergy go around Peekskill systematically removing anti-nuclear literature from public view.

We headed off to Indian Point hoping to find an appropriate place for a vigil... a few people in Buchanan saw our short caravan drive towards the plant with bumper stickers clearly stating our point of view. By the time we got to the guard house, they knew we were coming.

What I did not realize, since I had not physically been to the plant since April 2006 when I photographed Betcee May... I try to stay as far away from Indian Point as possible... is they extended the perimeter with brand new barbwire fencing, Guantanamo Bay deja vu, the domes barely visible from the road. There was no place to shoot with a good view in the background, so we decided to look for another vantage point.

Someone suggested this restaurant on the hill which I did not know called Monteverde, meaning green mountain, in the Town of Cortlandt. I couldn't beleive the vista... the eerie sense of pending doom in the valley below, the irrepressible noise of freight trains... and yet... Monteverde is the home of a Yoga and Spa center, which won Best of Westchester award for "Most Transcendental Facial."

The next day I called and asked the receptionist, how does it feel to do yoga on this beautiful lawn, with a nuclear power plant in the background? She said: "People who come here to do yoga really don't want to think about negative environmental issues." So I contacted Yoga and Global Activism to see if perhaps they'd be interested in hosting an event on Monteverde at Oldstone Manor's grounds.

A recent review of the restaurant put it this way: "The carefully positioned trees on the left of the property hide a view of the Indian Point nuclear power plant on this side of the river. The land would be great if Amtrak didn’t run right next to it every few minutes. On the other side of the river there is a freight train line that runs less often, but is usually even louder."

We weren't allowed to enjoy the view for very long... The managing director asked us to leave... so we regrouped at a kayak landing for a wonderful sunset... finished the evening in Peekskill at Ruben's Cafe, Governor Pataki's favorite Mexican restaurant.

But not everybody loves living in Peekskill, as expressed by this, if somewhat funny, rather depressing video on YouTube. Seems there's always an underbelly... Despite this, looking through the official Peekskill website, I see a warm and thriving community, doing its best while living in the constant specter of impending doom. It's interesting to note that I could not find a single mention of Entergy or Indian Point on the website, in either the press releases or the 145 pages of photographs. The elephant is in the room, and yet nobody pays attention to it.

I left Benny in Sherwood's good care and bid everybody farewell... On Monday morning, when Benny called to check in with the EcoFest office in New York, he was told they had received an anonymous threatening phone call... All the caller said, in an intimidating tone, was: "So, EcoFest is involved with Indian Point now, hey?" and hung up.

Nothing like hundreds of Union Workers standing guard around Peekskill and Buchanan making sure nobody gets out of line... Little do they know, their families, their children, their friends, are all suffering the effects of low dose radiation... every new day that goes by, we are all at great risk for allowing Entergy, NRC and the political leaders in the state of New York to take such risk and liberty with the lives of millions, for just the sake of a few electrons more we can easily make up with conservation and Light Emitting Diode bulbs.

Shame on you Hudson Valley, for failing to shut down Indian Point over so many years... It takes a man from Australia to ring your wake up bell? Get it together for Pete sake. Shut that sucker down! Screw the independent safety assessment and the relicensing period. Just demand the plant closed... now, before we're all sorry... The USA is still a democracy... use it before you lose it... what are you waiting for... Isn't that what you all elected John Hall for?

Will TEPCO Follow Entergy Example, Stick Japanese Citizens With Disaster's Repair Bill?

TEPCO and Japan just dodged a Chernobyl bullet this past Monday when a 6.8 on the Richter scale earthquake came far to close to destroying SEVEN reactors on the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant site. The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) and the NEI (Nuclear Energy Institute) spent most of last week trying to down play the significance of the event, and insist that the public was in NO IMMEDIATE DANGER. Based on the political spin of these PRO-NUCLEAR groups, and TEPCO itself, suppose the first question we all need to ask ourselves, is when was the last time you saw a insignificant incident carry with it a bill of $1.7 BILLION dollars? You can bet that price tag will continue to go higher as days and weeks turn into months, and possibly years.
Looking back on Hurricane Katrina here in America, the second question that came to mind, "Will TEPCO follow Entergy's nefarious and repugnant example, and try to stick the citizens of Japan with the clean up and repair bill? After Hurricane Katrina, many lower and middle class families suffered, and found themselves homeless, Entergy used the Federal Bankruptcy Courts to basically hold New Orleans hostage. Eventually, they were successful in forcing government to come up with grant money to the tune of almost $300 million, even though the parent company that year recorded almost $500 million in profits. How many families could have been made whole, had homes rebuilt if it were not for Entergy's rape of the system. Will the citizens of Japan find themselves held hostage in a similar fashion as the TEPCO tragedy unfolds in the coming months?
Reading about the expected costs from this Three Mile Island like event, considering the fact that NEI, the NRC and even the IAEA have classified this as and insignificant event, the citizens of America should be truly alarmed with the Price Anderson Act which protects nuclear reactor owners from financial liability in the case of a significant nuclear event or terrorist attack on and American Reactor. Nuclear Industry damages are capped at ten billion dollars in such a horrid scenario, with our government stating Congress can authorize money to cover any financial shortfalls in making a community whole. A significant nuclear incident, or 9/11 like terrorist attack on a reactor such as Indian Point would see damages instantly soar into the hundreds of billions if not trillions of dollars.
Federal law protects NRC licensees, and it is impossible for citizens to buy nuclear accident insurance. Two years later New Orleans calls for Federal Government assistance fall on deaf ears, and the tab there is far less than the tab would be after a nuclear accident. Do any of us really see government making a nuclear reactor host community WHOLE once a nuclear reactor has imploded, contaminating the land for tens if not hundreds of miles around it for hundreds if not thousands of years...forget NRC's false assurances that such and event cannot happen, and instead look at the nuclear fallout patterns in the aftermath of Chernobyl. Congress msut repeal the Price Anderson Act, as the time has come to END the handouts to this failing industry.
$1.7 Billion dollars is a lot of money for a small nuclear incident. Here in New York where two planes took down the twin towers we have 21 million people living within 50 miles of Indian Point. Entergy's Indian Point sits adjacent the Hudson River on a KNOWN earthquake fault, and is only 24 miles up river from New York City. Congressman John Hall's call for an ISA will not stop the wrongful relicensing of Indian Point. Only citizen outrage will accomplish that reality. 50,000 or 100,000 people marching on the plant would force the NRC to hear our voices. Congressman John Hall, Congressman Maurice Hinchey, Senators Schumer and Hilliary, and Governor Spitzer overnight could put that many people in front of these troubled and failing reactors...problem is, they do not have the political balls, nor desire to do that. For them it is a numbers game, and the numbers are all about them keeping their jobs, rather than about human health and safety. If they want to keep playing games, then the job falls to us as citizens to organize and make our voices heard.
Kashiwazaki-Kariwa should be a WAKE UP CALL to all GREEN CITIZENS of America that a Nuclear Renaissance is not the answer to Global Warming. Kashiwazaki-Kariwa should be a wake up call to the citizens of America that we need to demand an end to the Price Anderson Act that protects the nuclear industry and its profits at the expense of our nation, and every host community in America. The NRC may want to rubber stamp Entergy's license renewal application for Indian Point, but we as citizens have the numbers to stop them, even if it means a massive sit in at the failing Entergy owned site on the Hudson River.
One thought in closing...the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa reactor site alone has over 20,000 barrels of low level waste stored on site, 400 of which tipped over and spilled in this incident. The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa site is new as reactor sites go, and yet they have over 2,800 barrels of low level radioactive waste stored on site for each of the seven reactors. With some 440 nuclear reactors operating currently in the world, that means we have conservatively one million, two hundred and thirty two thousand barrels of low level radioactive waste just sitting around waiting for another accident to happen...any one care to tell us where the nuclear industry is going to store all this long lived radioactive waste that GROWS with each passing day?

Nuclear Renaissance, step backwards into the Dark Ages

by Harold J. One Feather
My point here in my blog is not denigrate the global warming theory, but to show you that it is being used to further concentrate political power in the hands of certain nuclear energy companies. I firmly believe that this is illegal and contrary to the US Constitution. The names of the key players in this lawless game are: Exelon, Entergy, Dominion, Constellation, Uranez, Uranium Resources, Hydro Resources, Cameco, Strathmore, Westinghouse, Fluor and several other lesser known nuclear-related companies.
The Propaganda
As the nuclear renaissance in allegiance with the global warming buffs continues its onward march through the history as one of the most controversial and concentrated political movements, using outright media fabrication of a decade's old problem, formerly known as pollution, now as global warming to foster a society-wide delusion that we need more nuclear power plants, that we need more sources of uranium, that we need more nuclear waste repositories and that nuclear energy is inherently safe. Being associated with global warming must indicate to the unknowing earning their well-meant support.
Supporting the nuclear renaissance is the mass media, owned by only a few individuals and corporations, who are, in turn, responsible to others with just as nefarious ties to unlawful and illegal trusts, syndicates, front companies, and outright Mafioso mobs.
This propaganda, at first, confused all the environmental groups and anti-nuclear groups but as certain contradictions within it are becoming more apparent, this propaganda is being attacked by all sides as a gross lie. Although the dividing lines in the sand have been drawn with several fence sitters being knocked off their fence into the wrong pasture, this propaganda serves only to illustrate the level and number of front groups that covertly sponsor nuclear energy as an alternative to coal and other power generation industries. On the other hand, this dividing line is providing intelligent decision making possibilities for investment to those groups that are truly for protecting and preserving the environment.
Advanced Burner Reactors (ABR) is most often used in the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) as its poster child of hope. Advanced Burner Reactors are still in the design stages expecting to come on line in nearly 20 years as stated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). This type of reactor recycles spent uranium, converting it to plutonium to be used again in the fuel cycle. Instead of decreasing the safety risks, these types of reactors actually increase the danger. But again nothing says that they can't spend research funds studying the ABR technologies. Also after reading the GNEP, I can't help but feel a sense of irony since it reminds me of a pipe dream and doesn't consider any potential accidents or disasters.
The Conspiracy
As our society's economy is based on the exploitation of our earth's natural resources, then adding value to this through taxation and tariffs, stocks, bonds and dividends, corporations and political parties. Given this, we were told that the name of this diffuse organization is the military industrial complex, named as such during the Viet Nam War. Owned by forces unseen, our economy is being driven in directions that are environmentally dangerous; all in the name of profit. Yet what can one individual do to resist this control; you can't stop purchasing their products especially food, gas, medicine and others, that would be suicide. And as they know that we can't stop using electricity, so again the conspiracy emerges, are they promoting this nuclear renaissance to promote coal-fired power plants although these contribute significantly to the problem?
A very illustrative example of the conspiratorial nature of this issue is the United States Enrichment Corporation (USEC) and its Megatons to Megawatts program. This program buys from Russia uranium that was formerly in nuclear warheads. As of April 2007, more than 12,000 nuclear warhead material has been sold to the US. This uranium is then converted to fuel for the 103 reactors spread across this country. The implications herein cause me great consternation in terms of world peace and stability.
The Mining
The nuclear renaissance has also increased the demand for the uranium, causing a boom in the in situ leach uranium mining industry. But sadly it has not caused increase attention to the abandoned uranium mines located in and around Native American communities. (read this post for more details)
In the Midwest in states such as Wyoming, ISL uranium mining is growing rapidly with former uranium strip mines being reopened for extraction. Nunn County in Colorado is one of the few places that the ISL operation where the community is actively opposing the mining operation over concerns about the effects on drinking water. In Goliad, TX community residents are wondering why they fell for the lies that the ISL uranium mining could return water quality to pre-mining levels. In South Dakota, abandoned uranium mines and current attempts by an ISL uranium mining operation are very major concerns in terms of water quality and current health crises in the downstream reservation communities.
These concerns are not heeded, only the desire for profit stands tall.
The fact is that most mining companies that are now producing uranium are capitalized by banks and financial investment corporations which I presume are owned by foreign countries who have long realized that control of the interest rates is more important than owing physical assets such as manufacturing industries, mineral extraction industries and energy corporations. Controlling interest rates does major significance in the common day lives of our society. Financing the nuclear renaissance is debt or government subsidies. And without the source materials for enrichment, the nuclear renaissance is supposedly going to be held to a standstill but not necessarily, there are other mining locations in this world other than in the US.
The Hypothesis
Therefore herein I state my new hypothesis; the nuclear renaissance is meant mainly for the Asian countries as they are in the construction phases of many new reactors using US technology and companies. The uranium demand is needed for these Asian reactors, not US reactors.
I agree with global warming but I know for a fact that nuclear energy will not be the solution to it. Only conserving what we have now is the only way to preventing future climate disasters, educating ourselves about the nature of the nuclear renaissance helps in this regard.

Entergy, all pretty in green!

Wow, what a relief, I can sleep so much better at night now... They don't credit the illustrator in this report... I'd like to find out who it is, just so I can ask him, or her, how it felt cashing in the check.
Of course, no mention in the text of the $300 million Entergy received from the Federal government last year to clean up their mess in New Orleans... or the billions of tax payers money spent managing their waste... maintaining security on their uranium supply chain, or the damage still imposed on Native American communities... As long as the drawings are cute... who cares? Right?
Gee, we're like so looking forward this bright green nuclear renaissance, with Al Gore and Robert Kennedy Jr. leading the way climbing over the Hollywood prop barricades... For after all... the enemy is oil and coal now... nuclear is our friend again... and Indian Point is so pretty in the moonlight... watching over the Hudson... the fish are happy, the water is clean... the radiation is invisible... the teamsters will watch after you... make the pain of cancer and still births go away... the lies, the deception, the rotten to the core corporate culture, the suits who don't care, just follow the letter of the law... here's our sustainability report... we're part of the community, we care... we're part of a conspiracy that has kept electron production out of the hands of the people, so we can stay fat on the hog, and spend lavishly on pretty PR campaigns to sway children and naive, gullible saps!
Entergy, wow... wow o wow... too cheap to meter... cause all the costs are hidden... delegated to the next generation... Sherwood's been away, a family emergency, he better get back to his blog soon, otherwise I may indeed write or say something there's no turning back from... we police each other... we both have a different set of "don't go there..." but this report... THIS report... really makes me want to scream... because it's so freakin' 1980 greenwash... it's like they don't even have a decent PR team... they are so clueless as to the "real" mood of the country... which is good, which is very good, because this thing will only go to make people angrier... angrier than they already are... at this plant, which persists, which everybody wants gone, which just hangs on and on... with their useless sirens and incompetent staff... a comedy of errors which I hope to God won't lead to something we can't walk away from... and according to this report... everything's just fine... you can sleep at night, we have it all under control, we're your friends... we just make lots and lots of $$$ for a sliver of billionaires... while for half as much, a tenth perhaps, we'd have PVs on every roof!
Wake up people... if Kennedy Jr. there is serious about this barricades stuff... well he better start putting his money where his mouth is and join us, because I really don't see him climb over anything without his handlers cell phoning him it's OK, the press is there, be ready for your media close up...

A Few New Books...

Quiet summer reading... George W. Hopley was director of market research at Enron North America... so the book flap for Nuclear Power Now reads: "an unbias look"... on page 185 "decades of safe performance"... shameless, unabashful peice of nuke propaganda trash. I have not seen the others up close, so I can't tell you yet... If anyone wants to volunteer writing a review... be my guest.

Iraq & Indian Point, one and the same!

"We are grateful to the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected the promises of discretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subject to the bright lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is now more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world-government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the National auto-determination practiced in past centuries". - David Rockefeller, In an address to a Trilateral Commission meeting in June of 1991

Congressman John Hall once said, you'd be surprised at all the connections between the operation of the Indian Point nuclear power plant and the perpetuation of the war in Iraq. Reading this quote from David Rockefeller, one can now understand why John has suddenly become so timid. David Rockefeller lives in Tarrytown, New York, not too far from Indian Point, where, after a promise he made to his dying brother Laurance, who was a torn environmentalist, the third brother prisoner in a family of environmental criminals, he would transform the old stables on the grounds of their estate into an organic farm.

It wasn't meant to be that way mind you, originally it was just going to be a local cooperative, but urged by so many in the experimental agricultural community, David suddenly had no other choice but to hire professionals who were going to transform these 100 acres into a hippy paradise. A very trendy organic restaurant in New York, Blue Hill, was invited to open an other kitchen at this new location, and now every weekend, members of the Trilateral Commission come wine and dine, and pay visit to Boris the pig, who Betcee May met last year face to face. Sadly, at last inquiry, the somelier didn't think organic wines were good enough to serve at their tables. Tell that to the California Association of Winegrape Growers!

Where does David Rockefeller stand on nuclear power? Well he is "pro" of course, although secretly, he probably wishes Indian Point wasn't so close to home. It is this form of aristocratic NIMBY that is crippling the anti-nuclear efforts of organizations like Riverkeeper and IPSEC, who are indirectly, through their illustrious membership, indebted to local financial contributions from the world government elite.

For you see, nuclear power is a way to perpetuate this agenda of corporate globalization and state control, concentrating the production of electricity into the hands of a few wealthy individuals, assuring the survival of the old guard autocracy families like the Rockefellers, the Rothchilds (who I grew up surrounded by) and the Kennedys belong to. Indian Point isn't just about old nuclear reactors leaking on the Hudson, threatening the lives of millions, it's about families like the Rockefellers finding themselves in the embarassing position of having to open their homes to strangers as a tourist attraction, hanging on to their fading dreams of world domination, in a new era saturated with YouTube and MySpace, challenged in their authority by groups like TED, a Bioneers for Billionaires, who fund World Changing and Tesla Motors.

We can't shut down Indian Point without the participation of the patrons who visit the Blue Hill restaurant at the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture... it is afterall, their decision, it is their world. We just live in it, peasants at the gates, while they send our boys to die in far away wars for an oil, we wouldn't really need, if monsters like David Rockefeller didn't walk the earth just a few miles away from the most precarious nuclear power plant in America!

Bill Maher Gets a Tongue Lashing!!!

From:
Susan Corbett
jscorbett@mindspring.com

Saturday, April 14, 2007

Last night, on his weekly show, Bill Maher said we are going to need nukes to fight global warming. I can't believe I heard him say this, he is normally right on about almost every issue near and dear to progressive hearts. I hope people will flood him with emails voicing our concerns that a lead figure of progressive thought in the entertainment world would espouse such a un-progressive opinion, and he needs to do more research. Thankfully, he was talking to Laurie David and Sheryl Crow, and they both said NO we don't need nukes! Awesome!

MANUAL REACTOR TRIP WHILE PERFORMING BOILER FEED PUMP MAINTENANCE
"The Indian Point Unit 3 reactor was manually tripped at 04:16 on 4/3/2007 due to low steam generator levels that occurred while the 31 MBFP [main boiler feed pump] speed control was being isolated for maintenance. Indian Point Unit 3 is currently in mode 3 with all automatic actions for a manual reactor trip occurring as required. Unit 2 was unaffected and remains in mode 1 at 100% power."
The reactor was manually tripped when steam generator levels reduced to 18% in all four steam generators. All rods inserted on the trip. No safety or relief valves lifted due to the trip. The motor driven aux feedwater pumps automatically started on low steam generator level and are being used to maintain steam generator level. Atmospheric steam dumps are maintaining reactor temperature. The Unit 3 electrical lineup is the normal shutdown electrical lineup. The licensee has notified the state Public Service Commission.
The licensee will notify the NRC Resident Inspector.

Hilary On Indian Point and Nuclear-Forked Tongued Conniving Bitch!

When I saw that Hilary Clinton had NO CO-SIGNERS for her 2006 bill calling for an ISA at Indian Point, I began having serious doubts about her, and her sincerity in helping us close down these aging and deadly reactors, and specifically Indian Point. Then, I went through the FEC records, and found she'd been taking money from Entergy, and the nuclear industry, and gave little credence to her re-introduction of the same legislation this year. Then, while over on the arch enemies web site (NEI-Nuclear Energy Institute), found the video below shot in South Carolina, and realized she's nothing more than a two faced, forked tongued lying bitch.

For all you that will write me nasty notes, don't bother...I'm not the first person to call Hillary a bitch, and will not be the last. Besides, in her case the shoe fits perfectly...Hilliary is all about herself, and will do and say anything to climb her way to the top of the garbage heap that is Washington, DC.

Pete Seeger Nobel Peace Prize Campaign

From Ron Miles, Brainerd, MN.

Pete Seeger Nobel Peace Prize campaign

We have mounted a campaign for a grassroots movement to persuade the American Friends Service Committee to nominate Pete for the Nobel Peace Prize. We have posted a petition on a site named petitionthem.com. The aim is to show grassroots support to the American Friends Service Committee to nominate Pete Seeger for the Nobel Peace Prize.

We know there are many people interested in adding support. We're asking everyone to circulate the petition information to at least 5 other people asking them to notify 5-10 other people. To read about and sign the petition go to:
www.petitionthem.com/default.asp?sect=detail&pet=3774

If that doesn't work just go to www.petitionthem.com ... the petition is on the home page. We hope that you can help circulate this petition.

~ Eleanor Walden

Pete Seeger is a crusader for Peace and Social Justice and has been over the course of his 87 year lifetime. As a prominent musician his songs and performance style have worked to engage other people, particularly the youth, in causes to end the Vietnam war, ban nuclear weapons, work for international solidarity, and ecological responsibility. It is time that cultural work receives the recognition that the arts have great influence and global reach, that it is not only a medium of entertainment but of education, compassion and fraternity. There is no more quintessential cultural worker than Pete Seeger.

Of course Pete has never been alone in this work. He is the first to affirm that. But his unique sense of purpose, decency, and ability, and the support of, his wife Toshi, and his family gave him the opportunity to be all that he could be. He is a role model and a guiding spirit; we can be influential in getting him nominated for the honor he deserves.

Pete has supported almost every peace organization in the United States, indeed internationally, through fundraising concerts, endorsement of activities, and personal participation. The justification for this acknowledgment is in the very fabric of progressive culture. Every one of us can think of myriad reasons why our consciousness of the issues of world peace, social justice and cultural sensitivity, plus the performance skills to involve other people, had something to do with Pete. The extended circle of singers, folk and folksy, topical, political, and sentimental songwriters, in someway owes a debt to Pete Seeger.

As cultural workers we know the power of the arts, we also know how difficult it is to gain recognition for cultural creation. Pete Seeger has gained recognition without compromise! Carl Sandburg called Seeger "the living embodiment of America's traditions...." When Pete was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 they said, “Pete Seeger’s contribution to folk music, both in terms of its revival and survival, cannot be overstated.”
Pete was also honored by the Kennedy Center with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994. In 2001 they again paid tribute to Pete Seeger with a cross generational presentation. The program featured friends and family including Tao Rodriguez-Seeger, grandson of Pete Seeger, and Sarah Lee Guthrie, granddaughter of Woody Guthrie." They described Pete as being, "Instrumental in popularizing the indigenous American song, his own compositions - among them 'If I Had a Hammer,' 'We Shall Overcome,' and 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone' (and 'The Big Muddy’) have served as anthems for an entire generation.

It is important to honor our forbears; we all stand on Pete Seeger's shoulders in a manner of speaking. We have an opportunity to acknowledge him a "father" of a cultural, social, and political movement, which enriched us all and in which we all share, as much as we share our paternal DNA.

Did Penthouse Go Green for Earth Day?

In the "The Wife Aquatic" episode of the Simpsons, the family goes back to Barnacle Bay, a vacation destination that has declined because of overfishing of the Yum Yum fish.

At the end of the episode, Lisa (the vegetarian, environmentalist, and moral compass of the show) gets the Barnacle Bay people to stop overfishing by coming up with a new industry for the island... which ends up being clearcutting the island's forests (much to Lisa's chagrin).

A logger then tells Lisa that all these big trees are being cut to make paper for Penthouse magazine! Which bums Lisa out even more.

Which is perhaps why, this month, their April issue, short of printing the magazine on recycled stock, Penthouse decided to go with the color "green" for their cover, with a radiant Dita Von Teese posing in a green corset!

The Day The Earth Stood Still

From:
Rochelle Becker
Executive Director
Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility
rochelle@a4nr.org

It's not nice to fool Mother Nature, but this April Fools' Day, let's play a trick on Global Warming...

TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS
FOR 5 MINUTES ON
Sunday, April 1st,
at precisely 7 PM ...

The Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility asks all Californians to join us for a fun, simple, and useful experiment.

All you have to do is turn off your lights (and TVs, Computers, DVD's if you wish).

AND HERE'S THE REASON WHY:
Can five minutes make a difference? You bet!

On February 1st, residents of France and Spain turned off their lights for five minutes. The result? A savings of 800 Megawatts in France and 1000 Megawatts in Spain.

Together, that almost equals the power output of either Diablo Canyon or San Onofre nuclear reactors. California utilities CAN measure the difference. More importantly, when the drop in usage is noticed it also helps prove that conservation can make a difference.
Of course, if you turn off your TV, computers and other electric equipment during that period the savings will be even greater. This conservation measurement will be useful to the California Energy Commission in their study of the full costs, risks and benefits of nuclear power.

Join Frank Craven at his home in Salt Point, NY for a Fire Ceremony

Written by Barry Tillman on behalf of Frank Craven and some folks planning the 20th Tipi Prayer

Dear All My Relations,

This invites you to join Frank Craven at his home north of NYC for a Fire Ceremony on the Spring Equinox March 18th (New Moon 10:43pm) noon to March 21 at noon.

Address and directions at bottom of this message.

Sacred/ Family/ Activist/ Leadership atmosphere.

We'll gather with those wishing for prayerful meditation around the fire plus gathering in the tipi and the house for other congruent activities like sharing intentions and co-creating our leadership community. Frank will lead sunrise and sunset ceremonies and will support a co-creative atmosphere for other activities such as a sweatlodge being prepared by us on Monday the 19th and an all night Tipi Ceremony beginning 9pm on the 20th and concluding after sunrise on the 21st and followed by a feast.

Please bring a bedroll (a few beds are available) and blankets, towels, warm clothing and sweatlodge attire, Please contribute to the kitchen so we may eat well, some donation to the house, musical instruments, sacred instruments, powerful intent for yourself and the world. We are extending this invitation to all of our friends and family.

No one turned away for lack of funds.

Water is there, tipi is up, firewood is ready, house is nice and comfortable.

Barry Tillman at 646-342-5836 is coordinating the building of the sweatlodge and the Tipi Ceremony.

The Tipi Ceremony on the 20th is untraditional. I take personal responsibility for the success of this ceremony. May we each bring forward our talents and gifts for a spontaneous and creative experience involving many medicine traditions, cultures, technologies, protocols, styles and healing modalities. The outcome may be a more unified community of leaders supporting each others plans and commiting to work together.

We will focus on our ability to generate visions and use the mind. Many have expressed an idea or a component they wish would happen in a ceremony. We will circle up on the 20th at 4pm to plan the evening. We will be discussing the possibilities with each other until then. We hope this gathering builds support for the April 7th Prayer and activities this summer. I expect this prayer to be 5-15 people.

Yours truly, Barry Tillman

Indian Point Unit 1 Waste Wrongly Being Co-Mingled, and Other Issues of Concern

First, it has been suggested by others, and even printed that Neil Sheehan has the social graces of a rock tumbling through an out house cellar, and is for all intents a putz...after my/our conversation with him today, we can verify this fact. He takes my call, then when he realizes who it is on line one knows it will be a long call, wants to call me back tomorrow as he has to get back to members of the mainstream media...to which I ask, are you saying bloggers are NOT mainstream media? He, (flustered) says to give him a break, he meant WORKING media...need a bigger shovel there Neil? Needless to say, our discussion went downhill from there...we'll see if he bothers calling back tomorrow as promised.
Think sometimes, that we are so busy with reactors 2 and 3 over at Indian Point, that it is easy to forget that Entergy is also legally responsible for failed miserably reactor one as well. There seem to be some very disturbing things going on at Indian Point that directly/indirectly involve reactor licenses 1 and 2, and the potential wrongful co-mingling of waste streams from these two separately licensed reactors and their twin leaking like a sieve spent fuel pools.
Lets back up for a few minutes and unravel some of this wondrous fabric we call life so that we can fully appreciate the warp and weave of coincedence.
About two weeks past, Remy C. and I had traveled into the city to make some face time at three important Green events. Heading back home on the 1:00 AM Metronorth we met a young man whose father worked at Indian Point...talk about a small world at times. This man had a wealth of information on Indian Point, real INSIDE dirt. Wasted dives into both the reactors, and spent fuel pools, leaks being hidden from us, and most interesting of all, a story that tens of thousands of gallons of irradiated water was being spirited away from the sight on a regular basis...ranked right up there with a story he was telling us about a hose left in the wrong place that acted as a siphon, but the train pulled into Peekskill before I could get that full story from him.
This week I had occassion to speak wih Barbara Youngberg who is with the New York DEC about Indian Point, and her remarks at Clearwater's Roundtable on Indian Point Leaks...pity no one at that meeting coerced her into openning up about reactor one. As I spoke with her, the eerie truth began to gel as her words bore witness to the young man's truth and vice versa. Being one handed is a real bitch, so going to simply make a list of some of what I now believe to be true:
1. The leaking reactor one spent fuel pool leaks have grown far worse than we know about, and one can assume the leak has gone not only from bad to worse, but could be severe, even critical in nature.
2. The spent fuel leakage rate is known, as staff is having to continually top the tank off to protect the spent fuel rods in said pool one. Further, said leakage is being captured through various deployed systems for said purpose and mitigation. Problem...volume is so great that said gathered leakage is having to be pumped into trucks (remember our young man) and spirited off site. CURIOUS....WHERE IS THIS IRRADIATED WATER GOING, IN WHAT VOLUMES, AND WHAT KIND OF TRUCKS ARE BEING USED TO TRANSPORT?
3. Lets assume my assumptions are right. What are Entergy and the NRC hiding, and why?

A) A severely worsening leak in spent fuel pool for reactor one, coupled with a known leak of less severity (currently) in spent fuel pool two would deliver a devastating blow to Entergy's relicensing plans, and both the NRC and Entergy are very aware of this.

B) As spent fuel pool one goes, so too goes spent fuel pool number two, and again Entergy and Indian Point know this.

C) News of a severe leak scenario of a spent fuel pool would be National, if not International FRONT PAGE news, and would deliver a crippling if not death blow to the Nuclear Renaissance, and the whole GNEP iniative...in short, no Nuclear 2010 plan of action, no new reactors here in America, a halt to the NRC's rubberstamping of 104 applications for license renewal, as is now wrongly occurring. Congress would have no choice but to step in and order and ISA of every nuclear facility in America...Goodbye Nuclear Renaissance.

We all know that the DOD, DOE, NRC, NEI and the whole nuclear industry have far too much at stake here to let that happen...so, they are hiding the truth from us, the intent being to NURSE things along by breaking rules (co-mingling licensee waste streams by moving pool one fuel rods into already over crowded pool two) and keeping everything nursing along until the rods can be transferred into dry cask storage and pool one is buried on sie for 14 millionh years.
WHAT A DEVIOUS AND BRILLIANT PLAN! ONE PROBLEM! WHAT IF THE NOW CRITICAL LEAKS IN POOL ONE GET EVEN WORSE, AND WE HAVE A FULL FLEDGED TANK RUPTURE, OR GOD FORBID, COLLAPSE?

In their quest for a global One World Nuclear Order with America at the helm, have the DOD, DOE, NRC, NEI, NuStart, Entergy, CASEnergy and the entire nuclear industry decided they are willing to place the ultimate bet in their gamble for a nuclear renaissance? Are they hiding a sinister secret, and praying to the devil that they can keep New York City safe from an Indian Point on the brink of the long feared nuclear holocaust, the ultimate nuclear accident, a spent fuel rod fire?
Without a full complete investigation by outside experts that had unfettered access to all parts of all that is the Indian Point facility, these are but the suspicions of one man who happens to be good with puzzles. Do you trust Entergy? Do you trust the NRC? Do you trust George Bush and his Nuclear 2010 iniative?
Can stakeholders afford to write this article off as the rantings of an anti nuclear heretic? Make your own decisions, but this writer think the time has come to have outside investigators crawling all over the Indian Point site, and that all efforts at relicensing be halted until we have the full and complete truth about the leaks, the strontium, and the tritium...if Entergy and the NRC are not lying to us, then they should welcome this investigation.
