Tick Tick Tick! The Ticking Bomb That Is Indian Point is a Fukushima 24 miles North of NYC, Says New Anti-Nuclear Group
What: Emergency Demonstration to Shut Down Indian Point Now
Who: SDIPN! (Shut Down Indian Point Now!), an activist group against nuclear power
When: Saturday, April 2nd, 2011 at noon

Where: Union Square, south end
Summary: Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant is located near the intersection of two earthquake faults just 24 miles from New York City. Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Japan's Fukushima, as well as lesser accidents in many other nuclear power plants, show that nuclear energy cannot be safe and we cannot risk another disaster.
THE CONSEQUENCES OF A NUCLEAR ACCIDENT ARE DISASTROUS AND UNACCEPTABLE.
Nuclear plants have deadly by-products like plutonium, one of the deadliest toxins known, that can contaminate the environment for hundreds of years.
NYC'S WATER SUPPLY IS 12 MILES WEST OF INDIAN POINT. WE CAN'T RISK ITS CONTAMINATION FROM IODINE 131, WHICH HAS POISONED THE WATER OF TOKYO WHICH IS 170 MILES TO THE SOUTH OF FUKUSHIMA. According to the U.S. Geologic GEOLOGICAL Survey, Indian Point is ONE OF THE most dangerous PLANTS in the country!
THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REQUIRES EVACUATION ONLY OUT TO TEN MILES IN CASE OF A NUCLEAR ACCIDENT EVEN THOUGH NYC IS 24 MILES DOWNWIND. SINCE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO EVACUATE TEN MILLION PEOPLE, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT INDIAN POINT BE IMMEDIATELY SHUT DOWN PERMANENTLY.
We don't need nuclear energy. During the heat wave of 2006, all nuclear power went off in the state and our electricity was still maintained. Only an average of 4-6% of the state's power comes from Indian Point. What we really need is an all out investment in ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND clean, renewable energy -- solar and wind, and a phase out of dirty and dangerous energy like coal, oil, gas and nuclear.
Indian Point is a disaster waiting to happen. Shut Down Indian Point Now! (SDIPN!) is a new group of activists that have come together for the express purpose of preventing another Fukushima in New York.
We are NOW demanding that Indian Point be shut down for the simple reason that nuclear power is inherently unsafe and until Indian Point is shut down, and replaced by renewable sources of energy, we shall not rest!

Who is this "Int'l Commission" ?

Geoffrey Small writes:

Who is this "Int'l Commission" ? It's the ICRP, dedicated member of the international scientific nuclear industry lobby which likes to tell governments what standard doses of radiation they should apply to their people by law. They are very close friends with the IAEA, UNSCEAR, WHO, AREVA, EDF, Toshiba, NRC and hundreds of nuclear power companies.
Now they want the innocent Japanese public to be legally exposed to 20 years worth of radiation every hour so they can argue that they do not have to be evacuated from the highly contaminated Fukushima, Iwate and Ibaraki zones, and more importantly, so that the government, the authorities and the power companies, will not be breaking the law by failing to do so.

In the words of the late Dr. John Goffman who co-invented Plutonium, this is a license to murder.
In 1981 Goffman wrote "Licensing a nuclear power plant is in my view, licensing random premeditated murder. First of all, when you license a plant, you know what you're doing--so it's premeditated. You can't say, 'I didn't know.' Second, the evidence on radiation-producing cancer is beyond doubt. I've worked fifteen years on it, and so have many others. It is not a question any more: radiation produces cancer, and the evidence is good all the way down to the lowest doses. The only way you could license nuclear power plants and not have murder is if you could guarantee perfect containment. But they admit that they're not going to contain it perfectly. They allow workers to get irradiated, and they have an allowable dose for the population. So in essence I can figure out from their allowable amounts how many they are willing to kill per year."
Now in the case of the ICRP, the containment is out of control, plutonium, cesium 137, Iodine 131 reaching levels approaching Chernobyl--and now they want to raise the allowable dose for the population to 20 millisieverts per hour. If Goffman were alive today, I think he would be screaming murder.
