It has become apparent from the most recent pump failure and emergency shutdown at the Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan NY that there is a pressing need to decommission the nuclear power plants closest to densely populated areas.

Rock The Reactors and the Green Party of Connecticut have identified 5 nuclear power plants in the United States top of the list for putting the public at greatest risk, not only in case of catastrophic accident, but also from long term exposure to chronic mishaps, leaks and daily venting of radioactivity.

The reactors with the most neighbors within a radius of 50 miles are:*

Indian Point, near Buchanan, N.Y., 41 miles upriver from the center of New York City, with 17.2 million people within 50 miles.

San Onofre, near San Clemente, Calif., and 45 miles from San Diego, 8.5 million.

Limerick, near Limerick, Pa., and 28 miles from Philadelphia, 8.0 million.

Dresden, near Morris, Ill., and 43 miles from Chicago, 7.3 million.

Peach Bottom, near Delta, Pa., and 36 miles from Baltimore, 5.5 million.

Hope Creek and Salem, both near Hancocks Bridge, N.J., and 43 miles from Philadelphia, 5.5 million.

The financial firm UBS has recommended to Entergy, owners of the Indian Point Energy Center, that they need to shut down their smaller nuclear power plant in Brattleboro VT to remain financially soluble. This is a Mark 1 reactor, the same design as built by General Electric in Fukushima, Japan. The state of Vermont has accused Entergy of not having sufficient funds in escrow, as required by law, to decommission Vermont Yankee. A similar situation may exist for Indian Point according to our sources.

Remy Chevalier, director of Rock The Reactors, founded in 2006 to enlist the participation of the arts and fashion community in the fight to shut down Indian Point, feels residents of Fairfield County, who live and work in the Indian Point 50-mile evacuation zone, should have a say in their future.

Riverkeeper and other local environmental organizations are in the courts fighting to prevent the NRC from awarding Indian Point a renewed operating license which would allow Indian Point to continue playing Russian Roulette with the lives of 20 million people for another 20 to 40 years, or until an accident permanently shuts down the plant.

Riverkeeper has demonstrated that Indian Point only provides a small portion of electricity to New York City and New York's 19th district, comprising Westchester, Orange, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess counties. Electricity today can easily be made up through conservation, improved technologies like LEDs, and alternative energy generation like solar or wind.

Rock The Reactors and the Green Party of Connecticut ask that our local representatives in Fairfield County raise their voices in opposition to the relicensing of the Indian Point nuclear power plant in solidarity with our neighbors in New York.

Over And Over Again...

For old and loyal fans of Green Nuclear Butterfly, who remember its heyday when it was cooking, causing double double toil and trouble, you will also remember how it all fell apart, destroyed from within, by infiltration, greed, stupidity and downright evil.

Well the same forces which caused FUSE USA's fearless leader Sherwood Martinelli's early retirement, now only a ghost presence on this blog, are once again in action having penetrated the sanctity of the Coalition Against Nukes, the group organizing the Rally for a Nuclear Free Future in Washington DC.

It wasn't for lack of early warning mind you. Yet, despite my best efforts, the CAN  committee decided to go against my advice and wishes, chose to disrespect my one and only condition for participation. In other words, after all the long hours I put into their effort, they picked a wrong choice of speaker over of my continued opposition.

I feel betrayed and helpless, not quite sure what my next move will be. My options have certainly been limited by this chain of events. I want the rally to be a smashing success because we need the blowback to influence the NRC's decision to shut down Indian Point. But I won't have anything to do with anyone who continues to reward illegitimacy in the anti-nuclear community.

The nuclear power industry feeds on internal conflicts, using the dishonesty within the community to divide and conquer. A house divided cannot stand, and yet, strangely, the press rarely investigates, afraid to take a stand. It leaves the door wide open for all kinds of two-bit crooks and charlatans to easily take the helm, raise lots of cash and aspirations from gullible anti-nuclear supporters looking for articulate voices to carry their message, giving false hope for a fat pay check.

There's no point harping on the situation. In my case, it's checkmate, and most probably, like Sherwood Martinelli, I will fade away, pushed out of this new anti-nuclear community I helped bring together, out of desperation.

The decision rests with the CAN committee, but I already know what they will do... nothing. They will, as usual, as always the case, hope I will just go away... hope I won't get too angry, or make too many waves... as the effectiveness of their work mysteriously evaporates, losing intensity and focus, wondering how it all dissipated so quickly.

The rally will be great, Americans will finally get a chance to vent their anger towards nuclear power in the Capital, something they haven't done in a long time. But then what? What happens afterwards? Yes, there will be "strategy" meetings, but it's always the same thing. Accommodation after compromise, short of a miracle, we'll be right back where we started, the same tired faces, with 100+ reactors still in operation threatening hosting communities, waiting for the next accident to happen to again "reconsider" nukes.

From excluding green corporate sponsors, to now allowing known spoilers into their ranks, CAN is setting itself up to suffer the same fate as all other anti-nuclear coalitions before it, again relegating license renewal fights to under funded, under staffed regional organizations, overwhelmed by the power of the Federal Government, the military-industrial complex and now Homeland Security which has stamped anti-nuclear activists as a terrorist threat!

Let's see what happens... I'll be paying close attention, albeit with deep regret, at what happens after September 22nd. The Hudson Valley liberal left anti-nuclear community feared FUSE USA and destroyed it. Let's see what they do to the Coalition Against Nukes! The de-clawing and de-fanging process has already started... just in time for Halloween.

This rally will take place before our congressional briefing Sept. 20th.
Congressional Briefing 2:00pm – 4:00pm Cannon Building – Room number 121 (confirmed) This briefing has several aims:

1. It is meant to focus attention on the medical effects of radiation exposure.
2. It is meant to call for an immediate phase out of Nuclear Power in the United States beginning with our GE Mark 1 and 2 boiling water reactors and any reactors with serious glaring concerns or located in a seismic/tsunami prone area.
3. It is meant to heighten the focus on the continuing catastrophe in Fukushima, Japan and especially in regards to spent fuel pool in the number 4 reactor which will hopefully still be intact by September.

This briefing will include medical testimony on the effects of radiation from Dr. Andy Kanter of Physicians for Social Responsibility (confirmed), testimony from Alice Slater of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation (confirmed) on the relationship of nuclear weapons to nuclear power, testimony on the state of our decrepit nuclear fleet in the United States from Michael Mariotte of NIRS (confirmed) and testimony from Beyond Nuclear‘s Paul Gunter (confirmed) on the Freeze Our Fukushima’s campaign and why it is imperative that we immediately close all of our dangerous GE Mark 1 and Mark 2 boiling water reactors in the United States.

We need to mobilize the grassroots to lobby their congress people to attend with letters and phone calls from now until then. C.A.N. will send a formal letter of invitation to all congressional members. Dennis Kucinich, whose office reserved the room will send a dear colleagues letter closer to the event. No Nukes No War Rally / Occupy The NRC @ 11545 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland, This will include a peaceful protest outside the building and a public meeting inside the building if possible. we are trying to reserve the NRC’s auditorium for that day. This rally will have a NO NUKES/NO WAR theme and Speakers will address the numerous nuclear fiascos across the country from Vermont Yankee to Indian Point to North Anna to Palisades to Davis Besse to Fermi to San Onofre and beyond!

Speakers will also address the crime against humanity enabled by the NRC when they allowed depleted uranium, previously considered Nuclear Wastes to be used in bombs being dropped around the planet by the US military. 2pm -5:00pm (confirmed)

Friday morning could also include a round table with organized labor if it materializes. This would be to discuss the job creation possibilities in concrete terms from a post baseload and beyond nuclear energy production model.

Some initial outreach has been done with the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) on this and if they are willing we have experts ready to come to the table to lead this discussion. This would happen simultaneously to the embassy row march and rally.

Green Lighting Book Soon Off The Press

In a few days our long awaited Sword of Damocles will be off the press and in the hands of anti-nuclear warriors all over the land.

Sadly the beautiful cover image of Betcee May shot by photographer Courtney Dailey was rejected by the editors at McGraw-Hill because the Philips EnduraLED Betcee held was shot too wide, and they couldn't tell what kind of bulb it was.

There was no opportunity or time to reshoot, so instead McGraw-Hill went with a close-up of the Pharox, who are big supporters of Global Green USA and design some of the best LED greenhouse lighting in the world.

A lot of hearts were broken, tempers flared, dreams shattered, it would have been amazing to feature the Rock The Reactors muse on the cover of a book so many worked so hard to produce, a book which carries such a strong message, that for the retrofit cost of LEDs, you can easily make up all the replacement power necessary to decommission old and dirty nuclear power plants.

Not all is lost. Rock The Reactors is in talks with the Pharox publicity department and other LED companies about future opportunities for Betcee May, who can easily be reached through her agency, Next Models in Los Angeles, under her fashion name May Lindstrom.

The three authors of the Green Lighting book, project and team leader Green Living Guy Seth Leitman, writer and researcher Brian Clark Howard of the Daily Green, and lighting engineer William J. Brinsky, are planning book signings all over the country.

Wake Up Green America

I'm looking for fresh ideas for a lot of things, and inspiration doesn't come as easily as it used to. We're faced with a lot of dead ends, complex green strategies come to nothing confronted with the immensity of the financial resources at the disposal of the planet thrashers. It's getting harder and harder to stay one step ahead of them, even with social networks.

The Blue Meanies function in their own insulated power universe the best of intentions can't penetrate. Our only weapon is fashion, and guilt... people quit their jobs because they start feeling queasy... that's dangerous in a crap economy, with no golden parachute. In the 60's, you turned on, tuned in and dropped out. Now you try, in vain, to change the world from the inside out.

So 30 years after Earth Day, we're in a great sense, practically back where we started from, not technologically, but politically. The same reactionary mentality rules Washington and the Fortune 500, no better exemplified than by Obama showing his true pro-nuclear colors.

Wake up Green America, it's time to get back to the roots of where the environmental movement began, and that's how absurd nuclear power really is. With the collapse of that industry, will come liberation of all other energy sources, like a ball and chain finally off our feet!

Each year it gets worse, as almost every reactor in the world leaks, it just doesn't stop, does it? You know what happens when the faucet drips? Eventually the sink gets full... climate change will be the least of our worries as the remnants of humanity have to live in radiation shelters!

What I don't get, is how much of a global preoccupation this all was back in the 60's and 70's and how now, everyone has since become so complacent. It's almost as if the same psychological phenomena that takes place in reactor hosting communities, has spread to the entire population at large. The whole planet lives in a state of denial about the deadly poisons we're unleashing for the sake of hanging on to the last threads of the post-industrial civilization.

We're all about to become bedouins!

And the worse part, is that after 30 years, we have developed the alternative means to produce electricity, cheaper, better, cleaner, faster... and yet they STILL want to shuv more nukes down our throats.

These people are monsters and criminals, and much like Jon Stewart demonstrated when he spliced Bush and Obama speeches together, they both say exactly the same words, the same phrases, all that has changed is the tone in their voices.

Who do we have to thank for this... other than the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, who for some weird, strange reason, never minded living in a palacial estate just five miles south from the most dangerous nuclear power plant on earth?

Go figure, we must all be stupid monkeys!

Lighting on the Walkway Over the Hudson will make use of a new system developed by a Dutchess County company.

The project leaders say it will use much less power and save the taxpayer lots of money compared with other lighting solutions once the state of New York takes over and runs the Walkway, due to open in October.

Tiny light-emitting diodes, semiconductors better known by their initials, LEDs, are the source of light.

They are strung together and contained in a tubular one-inch diameter shell that is both the lighting instrument and its conduit, said Andy Neal, president of ANL Ltd., a Salt Point-based developer of Illuma lighting systems.

"The conduit becomes the light," he said.

Meeting held Neal and others working on the project met Wednesday at the Mid-Hudson Workshop for the Disabled, City of Poughkeepsie, which will assemble the lighting system components.

The components will then be installed by All Bright Electric, a West Nyack, Rockland County, contractor that made the winning bid for electrical and security work on the walkway.

Federal transportation money, obtained by U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-Hurley, channeled through the city and then to the Walkway, is paying the bill, said Fred Schaeffer, president of the nonprofit Walkway group.

The contract is for about $670,000 and includes electrical work beyond the lighting, Walkway spokesman Steve Densmore said. That covers power outlets, security camera systems and emergency telephones.

Schaeffer said Walkway's team was very satisfied with the lighting solution.

"It provides relatively low- cost lighting," he said. "It's very efficient and you can also direct it down on the deck so it will be lit for safety purposes, but you'll still be able to see the stars and the moon and enjoy the natural atmosphere of the night.

"People are going to be surprised at how beautiful it is," he said.

Neal said, "Because you're using lots and lots of very small sources, it resolves into just a very flat, even illumination."

About 81,200 LEDs will be incorporated into the system that lights the walkway deck.

Bill DelTosta, sales and marketing director for the Mid-Hudson Workshop, said the challenge was that a strip of lights installed on one rail of the walkway needed to throw enough light to reach 20 feet across the deck without creating too much spill upward that would interfere with night vision.

"It's a very tough proposition," he said. "This is the only way it's going to work."

It also cuts the cost of operation by about 80 percent versus the more standard incandescent lights, he said.

James Johannemann, president of All Bright, said, "It's a tough job to be competitive with. It's such a high-profile job for us."

Thinking green is not just for Earth Day, so celebrations of the environmentally friendly movement shouldn't be limited to Earth Day either.

That's why Daphne Dixon of Conscious Decisions decided to organize the first Green Faire, a family-friendly event that will include more than 40 exhibitors, live music, children's activities and, according to Dixon, "an opportunity for people of Fairfield County to come together and learn how to live green and responsible lives."

The Green Faire will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens in Stamford. Admission is free and the event will go on rain or shine.

Several vendors and other interested parties, including U.S. House District 4 Green Party candidate Richard Duffee, attended a press conference promoting the event on Tuesday held at The Aquarium, a new environmental action and educational center on 10 Knight Street in Norwalk. The Aquarium also serves as Fairfield County campaign headquarters for the Green Party.

"The more of these types of events we have in the area, the better," Frank Grazynski of Earthplace said. "People need to not just talk the talk, but walk the walk."

Grazynski will represent both Earthplace and the Green Energy Task Force of Westport at the Green Faire.

"We'll be taking pledges from people to reduce their carbon footprint," he said.

Duffee will give a talk at the event and also be available to answer questions about the environment.

There will also be guided nature walks, seminars, demonstrations, children's book readings, blood pressure screenings, and live performances from Bridgeport-based band Caravan of Thieves. In addition, Conscious Decisions will announce the winners of the first Green Coast Awards, which honors green and responsible businesses in Fairfield County .

"It's an opportunity for people to talk to experts who are making a positive difference and improving communities, businesses, and the global environment," Dixon said.

The Green Faire also serves as a launch party of sorts for Conscious Decisions, a community education and outreach organization that stresses making responsible decisions.

Louisa Volpe, whose son Brian passed away due to a rare medical condition, will exhibit at the fair as a nutraceutical consultant. Volpe markets and sells nutritional supplements that do not include artificial sweeteners, preservatives or colors. She also sells environmentally safe cleaning products, as well as supplements for children and pets.

Other vendors at the press conference who have committed to participate in the Green Faire include: Bill Thomas of Norwalk-based www.alwaysbuildgreen.com; Rosie Haas of Natural Neighborhood; Dan Delventhal of www.mowgreen.us; Jeanine Behr Getz of Kids Think Big; Debbie Miron, an independent distributor of Shaklee environmentally friendly cleaning and health care products.

Thomas will discuss renewable energy and green building. He will also talk for the first time about new construction technology for which he has licensed rights that utilizes aluminum instead of wood for internal wall construction. The houses, one of which will be constructed in Fairfield County this year, are wireless, independent of fossil fuels and resistant to fire, hurricane, earthquake and insect damage. Construction costs, Thomas said, are comparable to traditional modes of building.

Among the products Haas will display for Norwalk-based Natural Neighborhood are Sigg bottles, reusable drinking bottles made of recycled aluminum. Delventhal will demonstrate the concept behind Mowgreen.us, a lawn service that utilizes manually powered mowers and old-fashioned rakes.

Getz will read from her new children's book about "simple ways that children can get green."

Gail Merrill, co-founder of www.mothersmilkproject.org, will be on hand to discuss her organization. She and her partner with the project, Nancy Burton, each lost their mothers to cancer. Merrill, a New Canaan resident, herself is a survivor of cancer. MothersMilkProject.org encourages mothers who live within a 50-mile radius of Indian Point nuclear power plant to donate a sample of their breast milk for a study. The milk will be screened confidentially for traces of the radioactive element strontium-90, which causes birth defects, bone cancer and leukemia and other types of cancer.

"So many people have died of cancer," she said. "This has to stop and the politicians won't help us."

The event will also include booths from environmental organizations such as Sierra Club and Connecticut Audubon Society.

Festivities will start with a blessing of the Earth by several spiritual leaders.

Haale at the Paramount in Peekskill on November 18th

Haale, who invited Rock The Reactors to table at the concert she held in Woodstock, NY a few weeks ago, will be playing the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill, NY on Sunday, November 18 - 4:00 PM

The Paramount is heavily funded by Entergy, the company that owns the Indian Point nuclear power plant Rock The Reactors has vowed to shut down.

Assault on the Paramount :: Vlog

FUSE USA plans to once again be outside the Paramount theater on the 18th to hand out literature about the opposition to the relicensing of the Indian Point nuclear power plant.

The Network ‘SORTIR DU NUCLEAIRE’ is currently the main French anti-nuclear coalition, with a membership of over 700 organizations and more than 14,000 individual subscribers.

It is completely independent, entirely funded by donations and the subscriptions from its members.

Their mission is to unite everyone concerned with phasing out nuclear power, convince France to phase out nuclear power generation by rethinking its energy policy, improving the efficiency of electricity use, developing alternative and sustainable generation scenarios.

GNB spoke with press representative Stéphane Lhomme to learn that the unified media front presented by new French president Sarkozy, allied with French Greens, is deceptive.

The world press reported a French moratorium on new nuke construction, when it fact it's a moratorium on the siting of new construction. Since there are already over 100 sitings in France, this means nothing, allowing EDF to go forward with the construction of new nukes.

The 58 (most of them Westinghouse) reactors in France are rapidly aging and need to be decommissioned. Sherwood Martinelli discovered that no monies have been set aside by the French utility EDF for this decommissioning period, and therefor, without the profits generated from new construction, the French nuclear industry will quickly go bankrupt, facing billions in decommissioning costs. Sherwood is preparing a full report on the French situation.

GNB also learned from Stéphane Lhomme that during the very violent storm that blew through France a couple years ago, the nuclear power plant near Bordeaux, was completely flooded, much like the two Entergy nuclear power plants in New Orleans during Katrina, except in this case, the situation became so critical, it is believed that Bordeaux nearly escaped a major nuclear disaster.

GNB and Rock The Reactors will remain in close touch with "Sortir Du Nucleaire" to keep each other abreast of our activities. Stéphane Lhomme understands that to stop nuclear up the Hudson, also means stopping nuclear in his country, as the two are so closely inter-related.

EDF plays a big part in the funding of NuStart here in the USA, the organization beating the drum for a wave of new nuke construction to fuel the hydrogen economy.

There will be a large anti-nuclear demonstration in Marseille on November 10th.
