Support The Vermont Yankee Seven on June 19th

For those of you who do not know the Vermont Yankee Seven, better known the Raging Grannies, as a quick introduction...they are a small dedicated group of women who had the courage to stand up against Entergy, who chained themselves together, thus successfully blocking the entrance to Entergy's ailing and failing Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor up in Vermont. They carried a banner reading, "No MoreTax Subsidies For Vermont Yankee." For their troubles, they are facing charges of trespass and disorderly conduct...if you asked me, they should be issued medals of honor, and a key to the city. They are scheduled for trial on June 19th, and can use all the public support they can get. Any chance we could get a group of us from Indian Point to head up, seeing as both communities are being raped by the same corporate monster in Entergy?

Seven Women in Court for Vermont Yankee Action

June 19th in Windham County Court, Brattleboro, Vermont, is the court date for seven women in the SHUT IT DOWN affinity group who were each charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct for their April 25 chaining action at Vermont Yankee in Vernon, Vermont. They carried a banner reading No More Tax Subsidies For Vermont Yankee.

We would love as many people as possible to join us in court. We will meet in the court parking lot at 7:30 AM and be in the courtroom by 8:00 AM. The women are: Julia Bonafine of Shrewsbury, Vermont, Frances Crowe, Paki Wieland, and Ellen Graves of Northampton;Dorthee of Wendell; Hattie Nestel and Marcia Gagliardi of Athol.

VERNON — Seven anti-nuclear activists were arrested after chaining themselves to a fence at Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant during a protest in which police also threatened to arrest members of the media.

The protesters, who call themselves the Raging Grannies, want the plant shut down and have engaged in dozens of similar actions since December 2005.

In those incidents, reporters and photographers were allowed to speak to the women and take pictures during their arrests.

But on Wednesday, Police Chief Kevin Turnely told members of the media they would be arrested if they didn’t immediately leave the property, which is owned by Entergy. Entergy spokesman Rob Williams said the order wasn’t given by the plant’s owners, but that in such protests, journalists must abide by trespassing laws just as protesters do.

Arrested and cited for trespassing and disorderly conduct were:
--Julia Bonafine, 38, of Shrewsbury.
--Frances Crowe, 88, of Northampton, Mass.
--Paki Wieland, 63, of Northampton, Mass.
--Ellen Graves, 66, of West Springfield, Mass.
--Hattie Nestel, 68, of Athol, Mass.
—Marcia Gagliardi, 59, of Athol, Mass.
—a 78-year-old Wendell, Mass., woman who goes by the name Dorthee.

Since 2005, members of the group have protested regularly at Entergy’s corporate offices and at the gate of the power plant in Vernon. State’s Attorney Dan Davis has balked at prosecuting them, saying he doesn’t want them using the justice system as a platform for attention.

There is a scene in one of the Austin Powers films where Dr Evil unleashes a giant "tractor beam" of energy at Earth in order to extract a massive payment.

Well, the memory of it kept me chuckling as I toured the extraordinary scene of the new solar thermal power plant outside Seville in southern Spain.

From a distance, as we rounded a bend and first caught sight of it, I couldn't believe the strange structure ahead of me was actually real.

A concrete tower - 40 storeys high - stood bathed in intense white light, a totally bizarre image in the depths of the Andalusian countryside.

The tower looked like it was being hosed with giant sprays of water or was somehow being squirted with jets of pale gas. I had trouble working it out.

In fact, as we found out when we got closer, the rays of sunlight reflected by a field of 600 huge mirrors are so intense they illuminate the water vapour and dust hanging in the air.

The effect is to give the whole place a glow - even an aura - and if you're concerned about climate change that may well be deserved.

Vermont Citizen Speaks Out

Our thanks go out to Evan Mulholland from Vermont for sharing his letter to the editor on the failing, brittling sister reactor to Indian Point, the Vermont Yankee in Brattleboro, also owned by the environmental rapist at Entergy.

I rate Vermont Yankee a zero.

New England needs to shut down the aging Mark I GE Boiling Water reactors, including Vermont Yankee. The Sale and Uprate were travesties and, as a result, Vermont is hosting a pre-deployed weapon of mass destruction that siphons millions of dollars out of state to Entergy and its shareholders.

It is unarguable that there exists a residual probability of an accident at Vermont Yankee, as well as a possibility of an intentional terrorist attack. The results of such an accident or attack would be truly horrific and catastrophic: hundreds of people would die, the land surrounding Vernon would be uninhabitable, the tourism industry would end, and thousands of Vermonters (and residents of NH and MA) would suffer from cancer in the ensuing decades.

The Vermont Yankee reactor has a maximum dependable capacity of about 650MW, of which about half is used by Vermont individuals and businesses. This approximately 325 MW is about 1% of the installed generating capacity in New England (not counting HydroQuebec). Since 1997, 9300MW of new generation capacity has been interconnected to the New England grid -- most of this new capacity is in the form of relatively efficient natural gas fired generators.

Some time this month or next, Vermont Yankee will shut down for 20-40 days for a periodic refueling outage. Hot, highly-radioactive, spent fuel rods will be removed from the reactor and placed (for safe-keeping) in an enclosed swimming pool 7 stories above the ground. During this time, Vermont's lights will not go out. Instead GMP and CVPS will purchase power from the grid. This power will be from gas-fired plants, from hydro, from wind (Searsburg), and from other nuclear plants in the region. This is exactly what will replace Vermont Yankee when it is shut down as planned in 2012, but the utilities will negotiate fair contracts in advance.

In the past few years, the peak electricity demand in Vermont has occurred in the summer, as opposed to during the winter, as was typical until the late-nineties. This peak is mainly due to air conditioning.

For me the choice is simple: When I weigh air conditioning and cheap toast against the low-probability but catastrophic result of an accident or terrorist attack at Vermont Yankee, I prefer conservation over nuclear power hands down.

Entergy Is Not State Farm

As hard as they try to pretend the part of State Farm, Entergy is not and well never be your good neighbor. In their latest bogus attempt at being Mr. Goodfellow, seems they have announced plans to provide funds for summer youth resources in Brattleboro, Vermont. The premise it seems is to get youth and families involved in FUN, HEALTY summer activities.

For a tie breaker, they can always pull out the ever popular greased Fuel Rod Climbing event, or for the very daring at heart, reactor core diving.

Brattleboro needs to tell Entergy they can keep their radioactively contaminated blood money.

BRATTLEBORO -- Youth Services announces the debut of Summer Resources for Healthy Youth and Families, a four-part initiative sponsored by Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee to help youth and their families located healthy and productive summer activities.

These resources include the Summer Events Calendar, the Summer Camp Fair, a Summer Jobs Bulletin, and the HEY! Help Empower Youth Resource Guide.

The Summer Events Calendar links younger youth to camps and summer programs through a Reformer insert that appeared on Saturday, with additional copies delivered to schools, libraries, and other locations across the county that families frequent, including Youth Services web page.

Seems Bill O'Reilly has his panties in a knot, and is accusing the Brattleboro Vermont paper of being a left wing, anti-American newspaper run by a bunch of nuts...their crime according to Bill, is they have called for the IMPEACHMENT of George (I took us to war on lies) Bush. Of course, Billy Boy would like to have us believe he runs the NO SPIN zone...in reality, half the time he's so busy chewing on road apples that it's a miracle he does not choke on his lies. HEY BILL, tell us about your PEABODY AWARDS! How many did you NOT WIN? TWO?

I agree with whoever at the Brattleboro paper called for the President's impeachment...I'd try Bush and Cheney in a heart beat on treason, and cannot believe Nancy Pelosi has taken impeachment off the table. Sure Bill O Reilly is also fine with aging reactors, least ways, as long as they are not in his and Hannity's back yard. The axis of evil is Bush, Cheney and Condi Rice, and the keepers of the gate are Hannity and O'Reilly. Fox is almost as radioactive as Vermont Yankee or Indian Point...let's hope a Democratic President in 2008 will see some of these rabid right wing shows cancelled and taken off the air. Think of it as a clean air initiative.
