Nuclear Reactors, or Drinking Water? The Choice is OURS, Not the NRC's.

What about Nuclear's HUGE use of our water resources? As Example, Entergy's Indian Point nuclear reactors that are polluting the Hudson River withdraw 2.4 Billion gallons a day from the river, and return it into the Hudson River full of contaminants at 104 degrees. As the reality of Global Warming descends upon us, numerous states including New York are suffering what could be called EPIC DROUGHTS.

Georgia has less than 90 days left in their lakes, and yet the Farley Nuclear Reactor site is demanding they keep receiving the water they need to continue operations. The Great Lakes are shrinking, and here in New York a crucial city water supply in the reservoir in Neversink, N.Y verges on empty as our states reservoirs sit at RECORD LOWS.

Before people leap on the Indian Point bandwagon, they need to ask themselves a very serious question. Are you willing to risk our state's valuable water resources to keep an aging, inefficient nuclear plant open for 20 more years?

Electricity Kissed By The Sun-Solar Thermal Energy Plant

Thanks to Gary from the war front to close Vermont Yankee in Brattleboro for this story lead from the UK. Electric energy completely CO2 emissions free, electrons produced from the sun in a facilty that almost resembles a modern day 40 story tall church spire...can someone give us and AMEN!

There is a scene in one of the Austin Powers films where Dr Evil unleashes a giant "tractor beam" of energy at Earth in order to extract a massive payment.

Well, the memory of it kept me chuckling as I toured the extraordinary scene of the new solar thermal power plant outside Seville in southern Spain.

From a distance, as we rounded a bend and first caught sight of it, I couldn't believe the strange structure ahead of me was actually real.

A concrete tower - 40 storeys high - stood bathed in intense white light, a totally bizarre image in the depths of the Andalusian countryside.

The tower looked like it was being hosed with giant sprays of water or was somehow being squirted with jets of pale gas. I had trouble working it out.

In fact, as we found out when we got closer, the rays of sunlight reflected by a field of 600 huge mirrors are so intense they illuminate the water vapour and dust hanging in the air.

The effect is to give the whole place a glow - even an aura - and if you're concerned about climate change that may well be deserved.

Has The Wind Industry Become The Corrupted Step Child of The Nuclear Industry

It would be nice to claim absolute knowledge of mankind's first original intent in using wind as energy. Seeing as the first use of windmills goes back to the Persians some 500-900 years before the birth of Christ, long before the invention of the modern day grid, that is impossible to do. The first known uses for the energy produced from windmills was the pumping of water, and from there, the grinding of grains. One of the most beautifully scenic and successful applications of windpower based on longevity (and one that still exists), is use of water pumping machines on the island of Crete. Here, hundreds of sail-rotor windmills pump water for crops and livestock. Regardless of original intent, wind energy has a long, clean and noble heritage

As a child growing up in rural America, I have fond memories of small windmills operating on nearby farms. To this day, cannot drive past one of the old steel bladed water pumping windmills without stopping to take a picture, though most of them are now rusted and inoperable. Time rushes down the river into the ocean of forever, and the world changes in the blink of an eye. Perhaps it is these childhood memories of mine, a leftover naivete from youth that had me believing in wind as a pure, clean and noble source of renewable energy.

So, what went wrong, when did wind become corrupt? Or perhaps, it is not the wind itself, but the wind industry that has become corrupt, its honor tarnished, its nobility long ago lost as it prostitutes itself to the highest bidder as earth raping utilities fight among themselves in the war to green their images in the public eye.

As we have seen, wind energy is not new, nor is the concept of using wind mills for the production of electricity. The first use of a large windmill to generate electricity was built in 1888 by Charles F. Brush in Cleveland, Ohio and operated successfully for almost 20 years. The wind industry as we know it today was born. In 1891, the Dane Poul La Cour designed and built the first electrical output wind machine to incorporate the aerodynamic design principles used in the best European tower mills. These safe, vital and secure wind mills were quite practical for electricity generation. At the end of World War I, the use of 25 kilowatt electrical output wind machines had spread throughout Denmark, but sadly larger fossil-fuel steam plants soon put the operators of these mills out of business and wind energy was relegated to some shelf waiting for a time when it would be of use and value once more.

Find it rather tragic that a renewable energy so pure, that was pushed aside by the vast over consumption and burning of fossil fuels, is now being adopted as the bastard child of the coming Nuclear Renaissance, given a place at the table for no other reason than to green the image of some of the largest and most vile polluters of the 20th and young 21st century. Some folks, including, ACE NY, tell me it does not matter how the windmills are built, only that they are...their reasoning, we need the energy. Where is the nobleness in that, where is a concern for making our mother earth a cleaner greener place in such mindsets? If wind power is nothing more than an addition to the grid to feed our ever growing demand for more and more electrons, rather than a means to remove foul, polluted energy from it, what is the purpose, why are we fooling ourselves with yet another feel good placebo that we gladly pay an extra 2.5 cents a unit for?

Can see all the PTA mothers in their Hummers strutting their stuff, proudly proclaiming their self important contribution to a cleaner, greener earth thanks to their participation in Exelon's Pecowind green energy program. It's OK, Exelon tells you so on their GREEN SITE when they state, "Strengthen your organization’s image while doing your part for the environment and your community." Am I the only one hearing the voice of the Church Lady as she loudly exclaims, " Well, isn't that SPECIAL?" Al Gore, and his inconvenient electric bill, Patrick Moore cashing in his honor for a pocket full of gold as the iceburgs melt away towards the ocean's floor.

Lemmings marching towards the cliff, ready to plunge to their death, and most seem so self absorbed that they have no clue. We have John Hall in the Congress, but he seems to have sold out to the perks that come with the title in front of his name. Hillary is the forked tongue Mistress of the dark dreaming of being president, and even Barrack Obama is not without sin as we wait for Mr. Bojangles or the Tamborine Man to ride into town to save the day. Wake up America, it does not happen that way, the world cannot be saved waiting on others to do the work. Global Warming will not dissappear if Wind Energy is used as a feel good placebo, instead of a true alternative energy.

RIVERKEEPER NOTIFIES ENTERGY NUCLEAR NORTHEAST OF INTENT TO SUE FOR VIOLATIONS OF FEDERAL TOXIC WASTE LAW AT INDIAN POINT

Under a green pricing program, Entergy Gulf States customers in Baton Rouge and western Louisiana can choose to pay 2.25 cents per kilowatt hour more to buy green or renewable power.

FPL ENERGY, a subsidiary of FPL Corp., which also owns the large utility Florida Power & Light, announced that it had added 844 MW of wind power to its power generation portfolio during 2001. FPL Energy owns 43 wind farms in 15 states throughout the U.S. One particular wind farm, Cerro Gordo Wind Farm, is located in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.

FPL has a HORRID Nuclear Safety record.

GE POWER SYSTEMS signed an agreement to purchase the manufacturing capability of Enron Wind Corp., the largest U.S.-based utility-scale wind turbine manufacturer.

GE has a lengthy record of criminal, civil, political and ethical transgressions. Here are a few examples:

In 1995 -- with the establishment of a Presidential Advisory Commission -- the full extent of GE's human experiments with nuclear radiation were revealed. General Electric ran the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Richland, Washington as part of America's weapons program; beginning in 1949, General Electric deliberately released radioactive material to see how far downwind the radioactive material would travel. One cloud drifted four hundred miles, all the way down to the California-Oregon border, carrying perhaps thousands of times more radiation than that emitted at Three Mile Island.

In 1986 Congressman Edward Markey held hearings in which he disclosed that the United States and General Electric had conducted experiments on hundreds of United States citizens who became "nuclear calibration devices for experimenters run amok." According to Markey: "Too many of these experiments used human subjects that were captive audiences or populations ...considered 'expendable' ...the elderly, prisoners and hospital patients who might not have retained their full faculties for informed consent. "

One of GE's most gruesome experiments --disclosed in the Markey hearings --was performed on inmates at a prison in Walla Walla, Washington, near Hanford. Starting in 1963, sixty-four prisoners had their scrotums and testes irradiated to determine the effects of radiation on human reproductive organs.

PACIFICORP POWER MARKETING (PPM), affiliated with Pacificorp, a large utility based in Portland, Ore., is playing a major role in building the market for wind in the Northwest. The company is purchasing and marketing power from three wind plants in the West, including the 261-MW Stateline Project, and has said it plans to add substantial wind capacity to its portfolio over the next few years.

Klamath Riverkeeper’s lawsuit asserts that operation of the Iron Gate Dam hatchery is just one of the ways that PacifiCorp, as the owner of the four Klamath dams, is destroying the River, its salmon runs, and the coastal fishing economies.

SHELL subsidiary Shell WindEnergy, Inc., purchased an 80-MW wind plant near Amarillo, Tex. "We are delighted to have moved so quickly in making a second major investment in the U.S. wind power market," said David Jones, Director of Shell WindEnergy, Inc. "Wind energy is not only the fastest-growing area of power generation worldwide but it is also one of the cleanest sources of energy." Shell WindEnergy also owns a 50-MW wind project in Wyoming, and Shell is developing or operating more than 1,000 MW of wind in the U.S. and Europe.

Russia Sues to Halt Shell's $20 Billion Oil Project (Update5)

Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Russia sued to halt Royal Dutch Shell Plc's $20 billion Sakhalin oil and gas project as President Vladimir Putin's government increased pressure to gain control of the development.

The Natural Resources Ministry is citing environmental violations at Sakhalin-2, which will produce the equivalent of a third of China's gas needs. Sakhalin is key to Shell's plans to increase output and take on more projects in Russia, the world's biggest exporter of natural gas and second-largest oil supplier.

TXU, a large utility based in Dallas, Tex., announced in early January that it plans to purchase a 40% equity stake in two wind farms under construction in central Spain. TXU is already one of the largest U.S. purchasers of wind-generated electricity, buying the output of several Texas wind plants. Also has ugly ties to nuclear.

Groups give TXU 60-day warning
Two environmental groups have sent a letter to TXU telling the company to correct alleged violations of clean air standards related to a proposed coal-fired plant -- or else.

CleanCOALition and Robertson County Our Land Our Lives, say TXU's permit application for the Oak Grove coal-fired plant in Robertson County fails to analyze the impact of the plant's emissions on downwind cities. Some preliminary research has found wind blows nitrogen oxide, or NOx, into the Dallas-Fort Worth area from outside nine area counties.

Indian Point 3 reactor shut down after fire, explosion

BUCHANAN - An explosion and fire in the transformer yard at the Indian Point nuclear power complex today led to the shutdown of the Indian Point 3 reactor, but officials said the fire was quickly extinguished with no impact on public health and safety.

The incident was reported at around 11:15 a.m. Shortly after noon, Michael Slobodien, a director of emergency planning for Entergy Nuclear Northeast, which owns and operates the plant, said the facility was stable and under control.

"Between the transformer and the reactor, there's a huge concrete structure," he said.

But the unplanned shutdown, the second this week, may push the plant's safety rating to white from green, the safest of four operational categories.

Entergy has declared a "notice of unusual events," the lowest of four emergency classifications in the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, with the state and regional counties. An investigation has been launched to determine what caused the fire and what kind of damage.

"It's too early at this point," Slobodien said.

The Entergy declaration prompted Westchester County to open its emergency operation center at the Transportation Management Center in Hawthorne. Officials plan a press briefing there early this afternoon.

The Verplanck Fire Department responded to the scene this morning, but they were told they were not needed because the facility's internal brigade handled the situation.

Buchanan Mayor Dan O'Neill said he was not concerned about the fact that the fire had taken place at the nuclear facility.

"Unfortunately, these things happen when you're making electricity," he said. "It could happen at any type of power plant. ... This had nothing to do with nuclear power, it had to do with making electricity."

Indian Point 3 had returned to service Saturday, following a scheduled 24-day refueling outage when workers replaced 96 of the 193 fuel assemblies used during operation.

Then, a steam generator problem prompted workers to manually shut down the plant early Tuesday morning, but no release of radiation was reported and the plant was restarted less than 24 hours later.

Coming up from a re-start after that unplanned shutdown, Indian Point 3 was at about 90 percent capacity when today's fire broke out, officials said.

The plant, which went online 31 years ago this week, had two unplanned shutdowns in 2006, according to Nuclear Regulatory Commission records.

On Monday, 123 of the 150 new emergency-warning sirens failed to successfully complete an operational test. The sirens are required to be ready to go by a week from Sunday. It was not known immediately if the existing siren system sounded today or if it was supposed to.

Marilyn Elie of WestCAN spoke with Richard Backley at the NRC and published this on the indianpointsec list:

It is transformer 31 that caught on fire. At his time they do not know the extent of the damage and it is being investigated. "At this time we don't know what route the company will take in either repairing or replacing the transformer." This is one of two transformers. Evidently it is possible to operate with one, if power is reduced.

I think that this is the same transformer that was a problem several years ago when a grounds keeper was electrocuted. It was entered into the corrective action matriix then. I asked Backley for more information about this and will keep you posted. This unplanned shut down should take Unit 3 out of the white caegory and put it squarely in the green.

The plant uses part of the electricity they produce for internal purposes. Backley claims that emergency systems are not comprised and that the plant is running on electricity from the switch yard. He said that first responders were not notified promptly because the firewas extinguished on site. First responders wiere not notified until 12:15.

There is no emergency event notification on the NRC web site yet which is odd. A reactor in MO, Calloway, had a transformer fire yesterday morning and it was posted right away even though the plant was already in shut down. Why not Indian Point? Also, it was hard to get information. It is entirely possible that there is more here than meets the eye - at least so far. Stay tuned...

Curse The French!

Well, folks, looks like we're all going to the ball... March 2nd... This Town Hall meeting Rock The Reactors had been advocating ever since John Hall has been elected to office is about to take place... I want to apologize to Manna Jo Greene for thinking she'd been flaking out on me since I ruined her sail up the Hudson on the Clearwater Sloop after the Coast Guard boarded the ship because their intelligence told them some organization wanted to rock the reactors. If that's "intelligence"... If the Coast Guard couldn't even Google Rock The Reactors to discover it was just a website with a muse for a beacon, then folks, we're in a lot more trouble than we bargained for, because that day, I realized that indeed, we're not safe on the Hudson.

But face it Manna Jo, it was raining cats and dogs, you were over an hour late, we were soaked, nobody wanted to take a sail that day anyway... and you didn't give me the time of day... you wouldn't return my calls, you wouldn't talk to me... You had me do this all around you, because you wouldn't share, you thought I was just some crazy Frenchman... Well I am, oh... yeah... But look where I am!

And look at you? Working diligently, in absolute secret from OUR own intelligence services, running with it, making your back room deals with your connections, probably going around saying, make sure Remy and all his crazy friends don't hear about this... well... you can't hide a press release... you want people in the room don't you? So can't we just bury the hatchet, can't your organization, and our organization, now the largest coalition of anti-nuclear groups in the nation since the Clamshell Alliance just work together to finish the job? Did you really think you could do this all alone... by yourself, just with your Westchester country club friends? When we're about to shut ALL of nuclear industry down?

Come on Manna Jo, this is the NRC we're talking about... Which is tied in with DoE... and DoD... this goes all the way back to the National Secrecy Act of 1947... You think they're going to give up their greed, their ignorance, their INSANITY because a few local well intentioned Congressmen sign a bill to go take a peek inside? You want to know how bad it is? It's so bad plant workers are now committing mass murder-suicide, that's how bad. Doesn't that tell you something?

OK, it's true, we're tabloid journalism at best, we rattle the cages, we make noise, we're like children. But guess what? Our blog traffic is through the roof, which is better than I can say for IPSEC's old cranky website not been updated since cobwebs took over... It's better than Riverkeeper, where poor Lisa, who I love, seems to be all alone in her corner, with Robert Jr. nowhere to be seen or heard on this issue... attending military technology transfer conferences... what the heck is he doing? Planning his return on a white horse?

Or Clearwater, Manna Jo, what happened to Clearwater, that Pete Seeger himself would want to distance himself from it... all his life has he been wanting to shut down this plant, so why don't we give it to him as a going away present, so he can be there when our muse flips the switch? I have this planned down to the micro second Manna Jo... Don't you know? Don't you know? Entergy isn't getting away this time...

So I just wanted to say thank you for working so hard, albeit pushing Rock The Reactors aside, pushing Green Nuclear Butterfly aside, and lining up such an illustrious bunch of people... with the monies all your donations allocate you... but now, let's make it count OK? Not like IPSEC then charging $60 for the DVD of Helen Caldicott's talk in White Plains so NOBODY can afford hearing it. Ask Mark Jacobs how many PRO-nuclear F*** he's got on his board... and the conflict of interest NIMBY hypocrites has, keeps sabotaging chances of IP shut down!!!

2012 their license is up. Are we going to wait for the end of the Mayan calendar, massive Global paranoia on the scale of Y2K, to shut the place down? Clean it up...? Let it be so the good people of Rockland county can breathe again? So ALL of Manhattan and Fairfield County can know their only fear is a meteor... or that if, or rather when, the ice caps melt, nukes riverside won't contaminate all bodies of water worldwide?

Let's take a hint folks... Let's not Lessard and his extended family's passing count for nothing... This man was troubled... We need to know why he went bezerk... What was his job, his responsibility? Who is this Lessard family which seems to have so many of their members scattered and employed throughout the nuclear industry? Will Congressman John Hall open an investigation into this incident, this gruesome murder? This is what the people want... So let's give it to them.

Entergy knows Indian Point is a sitting duck. I've heard from industry people themselves who told me they don't think they'll be able to hang on to this one, that the coalition building up to shut it down was going to be too great. They saw it coming months ago... I had one letter from an Entergy supporter who threatened to leave NY state in disgust because he knew the bloody commie liberals would succeed in destroying its local economy by shutting down Indian Point. Well that ain't gonna happen folks, because we are, as we speak, working with UBS and HSBC to bring alternative energy investment into Rockland County.

It's done, we've already won, put that in your pipe and smoke it, manifest it. It's fait accompli. Scuze my French. This has been in the works for so long... so long... you can't imagine. Since 1980 we've wanted to shut down this plant, prove to the world that the soft energy path was the direction home for humanity. It had to come down to the wire somewhere, so why not Indian Point, why not just a few miles North from the most amazing city in the world? A new fresh start... N'est-ce pas Mr. Wasserman?

So let's it be done and over with shall we? Let's just walk over to the Indian Point office, and quietly, calmly, ask them to flip the switch. Give it up, just go home, back to your families. A coworker of yours, who used to do under welding at the plant, has it all ready for you, come work with us in the residential solar industry, courtesy of the CT Technology Council.

Resistance is futile, and I'm tired of all this agony... I got better things to do in my life than slay dragons for maidens who don't want to talk to me... I have a techno circus to build. Just pack it up will you? Shut out the lights, go home, clean up the place... give John Hall his alternative energy center on the old plant grounds... Let's keep saving and cleaning up the Hudson... let's clean up this mess before it's too late, before all the women in a 50 miles radius die of breast cancer... before this planet awash in a radioactive nightmare... all so fat cats at Entergy can keep getting rich on electrons we can make you for free!

Rock The Reactors Green Beauty Graces March Penthouse

One of Green Nuclear Butterfly's writers, as well as a cohort in the efforts to shut down the aging Nuclear Reactors that are collectively known as Indian Point, is Remy Chevalier from the Rock The Reactors website...he's very involved in the Green Industry, and some might say the person who introduced Betcee to environmental activism, leading to her being featured on the November cover of E Magazine. Betcee is a LOT of things, but at the core of who she is, is a woman with a very GREEN HEART. Seems her latest move is a revealing one...literally.

The Rock The Reactors girl, part-Cherokee Betcee May, who recently changed her professional name to May Lindstrom, is now March's Penthouse magazine centerfold. Sure many of the men over at Indian Point will be buying that March issue, but what I found interesting, and notable was her answer to a very revealing question. Penthouse asked Betcee what she would do if she had a million dollars, and she replied: "invest in alternative energy." Good for BETCEE...now, if she'll just get folks to join us here at the Green Nuclear Butterfly in closing down Indian Point!

Remy Chevalier of Rock The Reactors met Betcee on Friendster two years ago where she invited him to join her on Model Mayhem, a site where models and photographers meet without the need for a modeling agency. They started to collaborate on green ideas together. Remy had worked with other models like Angela Lindvall and Summer Rayne Oakes (featured here on Green Nuclear Butterfly last month) as a green consultant. Betcee agreed to pose in front of the Indian Power nuclear power plant in April of 2006, attracting much needed renewed attention to the plight of the aging reactors. The dedicated web page Remy created quickly became a huge success on the Internet, including with many workers at Indian Point, who embraced Betcee as their own pin-up girl. As I said, sure many of the nuclear plant workers will be buying the March issue.

Remy built the Rock The Reactors campaign around Betcee's image, promoting the website nationally up and down Route 66, and elsewhere around the country to bring increased focus to Indian Point and the need to shut down the plant. Betcee was a guest of honor at the Pömed party in New York, co-sponsored by Verte, Lü (another of Remy's many projects) and ELLE magazine, where Betcee met leaders in the green fashion and design community. A Green Industry that is sadly far too QUIET in the battle to close down Indian Point. Contrary to Entergy's full page ads, nuclear is not GREEN, and I would be happy to discuss this with the editors and leaders of the Green Fashion & Design Industry at a time and place of their choosing. I'll be attending Greendrinks regularly to meet some of you.

Rock The Reactors, Betcee and Remy were the topic of a full page article in Connecticut's Fairfield Weekly written by Starre Vartan, editor of the popular green fashion blog Eco-Chick. This paved the way for Betcee's cover on E The Environmental magazine and her posing in a field of windmills in Wyoming for Summit Studios in Colorado. One of the photographs from the windmill series has also been featured here on Green Nuclear Butterfly for those wanting to search through our archives.

Betcee grew up in Minnesota. She now lives in Los Angeles where she is pursuing her modeling and acting career. She has drawn considerable attention to the issue of Indian Point. Green Nuclear Butterfly thanks Betcee for bringing attention to the serious problems at Indian Point, and hopes sincerely that she will be more visible on this important issue as the days and months unfold...who knows, perhaps she can do a photo shoot with Congressman John Hall who claims he is ready to do whatever it takes to close those reactors down...trust us, that story would make CNN.

For those in the know, it's no great secret that in the last few months, there has been some tension between Betcee and Remy, and we at Green Nuclear Butterfly certainly hope that these two get back on track. Their collaboration has done an immeasurable service to our fight to shut down Indian Point, putting the issue in people's consciousness. We couldn't wish for a more solid media assault team... So bury the hatchet guys, please, we need you. Together, we ALL can expose the lies, deceit and trickery that is keeping these dangerous reactors up and running...we can start with John Hall's dog and pony legislation introduced with great false fanfare.

We know Betcee wants to see Indian Point shut down as much as we do. Her father installs solar electricity for a living in her home state of Minnesota. The role Betcee has played in this campaign has been invaluable and amazing... We're all heartbroken that these two friends, who both believe so much in the same things, can't patch things up for the sake of the campaign.

Till then, the work they did together remains. Betcee the Rock The Reactors girl, the girl serving you organic wine on the cover of E magazine. Now Betcee is this month's Penthouse centerfold, another world, yet perhaps her way to becoming the first green anti-nuclear Pet of the Year. Betcee, if you read this, if you get on Howard Stern, please put in a good word for what we are doing... never mind Remy... OK? Don't let us down! Finish what you started.

Unfund Nuclear Energy...Switch Funding to Alternatives

Just found this, and thought it worthy of mention...

In just five days—including Christmas Day!—more than 100 organizations signed the letter urging the new Congress to shift energy funding from nuclear power and fossil fuels to renewable energy and efficiency programs.

This is really a historic coalition, composed of most of the major renewable energy trade associations, safe energy groups, businesses and more. We intend to build on this first effort throughout 2007. With your help, we can make this needed shift in energy priorities a reality.
