Pikachu at the Macy's day parade is full of helium, which the New York Times describes as "a finite and increasingly scarce resource, produced extremely slowly by decaying uranium and thorium." Like anything else, when it gets scarce and expensive, people start thinking about using it more carefully. So this year, instead of just releasing it into the air, they recovered it.

Even Small Terrorist Nuclear Explosion Would Be BIG Success States Homeland Security Scientist

So, which of these buttons causes a scram?

Despite the false assurances of the NRC, our federal government is serious concerned about the real possibility of a successful terrorist explosion of even a TINY nuclear device within America's border. A Homeland Security scientist has stated that even a small explosion of such a device would be a HUGE SUCCESS within the terrorist community. The scientist is thinking something along the lines of a 100 ton explosion would be monumental, though a much smaller explosion that the nuclear bombs unleashed at Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.

Even more disturbing in the article is Clyde Layne's contention that terrorist could easily figure out how to explode the weapon if they can get their hands on the materials...as in radioactive materials. A 100 ton bomb would be equal too, or greater than some of the largest traditional bombs ever exploded, and the knowledge to explode one is EASILY found on the internet.

So, with Homeland Security flat out admitting this reality, why is the NRC trying to mitigate the risks posed by poorly guarded and defended commercial reactor sites such as Entergy's failing Indian Point? Could it be MONEY? Even more puzzling...why hasn't any one discussed what would happen if one of these NUCLEAR DEVICES were to be exploded in front of the gates of Indian Point, or on the dock abot 300 yards from the reactors?

Even Tiny Nuclear Explosion Could Be Terrorist “Success,” Homeland Security Scientist Says

MIAMI — A nuclear device assembled by terrorists is likely to have a “relatively low yield,” much smaller than the 10-kiloton weapon dropped on Hiroshima at the end of World War II, the chief nuclear scientist with the U.S. Homeland Security Department said yesterday (see GSN, May 11)

Nevertheless, even a small nuclear explosion would probably be viewed as a “success” by any nonstate actor, Clyde Layne said during the first day of a weeklong nuclear terrorism conference here.

“I would have to think that a 100-ton nuclear explosion would be a real success for al-Qaeda or whoever chose to attack us that way,” he said.

Such a blast would be on the order of some of the largest conventional explosions ever set off and might not even bear the huge, tell-tale mushroom cloud. It would nevertheless release the radiation associated with fission, said Layne, who works with the DHS intelligence office (see GSN, Feb. 23).

Producing fissile material, either the plutonium or highly enriched uranium that would fuel any improvised nuclear device, remains out of the reach of even a sophisticated terrorist group, he said. “Essentially the nonstate actors will need to buy or steal that material, and that is the main focus of our activities to combat nuclear terrorism.”

A terrorist group with enough plutonium or uranium for a weapon could acquire the scientific and mechanical know-how to build the bomb, Layne said.

“It is something that’s doable with reasonable machine shops and casting facilities,” Layne said. “It’s not trivial but, as the intelligence community has said, it’s not an insurmountable task.”

There is enough information on the Internet to piece together a workable nuclear weapon design, Layne said, describing the posted designs as “all over the map.”

“Some of them are ridiculous. Some of them have some things right,” he said.

Given the technical difficulties involved, however, a device crafted in a machine shop without the testing available to nuclear weapon states is likely to produce a much smaller detonation than even the first atomic weapons.

“A successful terrorist nuclear device might be relatively low yield. There’s no way to speculate what that yield would be,” Layne said. “There could even be instances where first responders are aware there’s been a very large explosion, but they didn’t see the whole mushroom cloud and devastation that you’d expect from a 10-kiloton device.”

Arriving at the scene, emergency personal would encounter radiation, but it is possible they would be unable to immediately determine if it was a nuclear explosion or a very large “dirty bomb” radiological dispersal device.

A number of terrorist groups have the capabilities to produce a crude radiological weapon, which would combine conventional explosives with radioactive material, Layne said. Given the relative ease of creating a dirty bomb, the fact that one has never been set off is slightly puzzling, he said.

“The RDD seems to be fairly simple, so why haven’t we seen some of these?” Layne said.

A Calvert Cliffs Doll Launched

The Indian Point Nuclear Dead Baby World Tour is pleased to announce that one of our dolls will be visiting the Calvert Cliffs reactor area this coming Saturday, June 16th, 2007. Our heart felt thanks to Cathy Garger for making this possible. She spent a portion of last weekend out scouring the countryside, and found two dolls, one of which is in transit here to New York, and the second being taken to Calvert Cliffs. Cathy is a freelance writer, and anti-nuclear activist in her own right, with her primary issue being Depleted Uranium. To familiarize our readers with her work, we are providing links to two of her articles.

Helen Caldicott-Nuclear Not So Green

I know that nuclear is not green, have been trying to make people aware of that with this blog. For my efforts, I have been ridiculed, had hate blogs launched against me, and even received a few well intentioned death threats...how quaint. If there is good news in that, I am in good company, as Helen Caldicott has endured much the same, and yet was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. I had to laugh when reading the article below when Helen Caldicott quipped after being questioned about the lack of recent death threats that she just was not talking loud enough.

She has a new book out, "Nuclear Is Not The Answer" that every citizen within 50 miles of a nuclear reactor needs to read. Actually, with the Bush administrations plans to put a nuclear reactor on every street corner, every American Should read this story.

Nuke power not so clean or green

Cold War-era nuclear fears have eased in recent decades, replaced by anxieties over global warming. Lately, in some circles, nuclear power has gained a new reputation as a pollution-free cure-all for a world starved for clean energy.

But the nuclear industry hasn't cleaned up its act, according to Helen Caldicott, who spearheaded the nuclear disarmament movement in the 1980s. (Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling nominated Caldicott for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985.) Caldicott, a pediatrician by training, has devoted 35 years to an international campaign to educate the public about the health hazards of nuclear power.

Not only is atomic energy inefficient, but it adds to greenhouse gas emissions while releasing deadly radiation for countless generations, argues Caldicott. Her recent work is summed up by the title of her book Nuclear Power Is Not the Answer.

She is working with the Nuclear Policy Research Institute, which she founded, to convince Congress that solar and wind power instead can mitigate global warming.

Caldicott is known for courting controversy, whether by debating with world leaders, marching naked in the streets of San Francisco, or implying that Hershey sold radioactive chocolates containing milk produced near the Three Mile Island disaster. While she no longer receives death threats as she did in the 1980s, Caldicott told CNET that just proves that her voice hasn't been loud enough lately.

Let Indian Point Prove Evacuation Plan Works Under Terrorist Attack Scenario

In a previous post, I've pointed out that the NRC's DBT and the Force on Force Exercises that are derived from it, at best, are a cruel joke on host communities. Further, we all know that Indian Points evacuation plan WILL NOT WORK. In fact, Sam Collins of the NRC admitted as much in a recent public meeting when he stated to the audience that, in the case of a fast moving nuclear incident or terrorist event at the plant, evacuation would not work, and FEMA would have to rely upon sheltering in place.

In an article posted this week, GNB shared with our readers a slide from a Centers for Disease Control presentation that show people sheltered in their homes would only have a 40 percent level of protection from the radioactive matter released in a nuclear event. For those without a basement, or those living in say a trailer, such as the park just up Route 9, the level of protection if sheltered in place drops to and even more deplorable ten percent level.

I bring this up, as it is time for reactor licensees to prove their evacuation and/or emergency plans are workable, by proving it with a full blown emergency plan implementation exercise as a part of the relicensing process. Such a precedent for such an exercise is no longer without precedent, as a 4,000 member strong contingent held the first ever large scale terrorist attack nuke crisis emergency exercise in Marion, Indiana at a cost of $700,000. To put that financial cost into perspective, $700,000 is less than one days revenue stream for the Indian Point reactors...since they seek a 20 year license renewal, such a figure is NOTHING in the big picture for their revenues.

Some 700 police and fire officials from Marion County, IN, will be part of the 4,000-strong contingent that will respond to a simulated nuclear disaster later this week at a cost of $700,000, Public Safety Director Earl Morgan said Monday, May 7. Military and public safety officials often practice their craft in simulated circumstances, but this will be the nation’s first-ever scenario depicting a situation in which a nuclear device is detonated in an American city by terrorists. The training exercise takes place Thursday through Sunday at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in Jennings County on the grounds of a complex of buildings constructed in the early 1900s. Protection of Sheltering In Place-The 40 Percent Truth

My morning coffee was interrupted by the ringing of the phone...it turned out to be the reverse 911 system calling to let me know that Entergy's new siren close to my home will be sounding off today somewhere between 9-11:30 AM as Indian Point tries to get its new system to perform correctly. Happy, happy, joy, joy. Being in a generous mood this morning, lets assume that the system actually works. Now, lets assume there is a fast breaking event at the facility, and the alarms are going off in at least 94 percent (The NRC benchmark for pass/fail) of the affected area.

Assuming everyone is at home for this event, you grab your wife/husband, children, and Pedro the dog and rush into the house to begin implementation of the Emergency Evacuation Plan. As the children race through the house closing up windows, Pedro is barking incessantly, and you run to retrieve your handy roll of duct tape, your wife turns to channel 12 to listen for updates. In truth, there is a very real chance that your local news station is not going to have anything of much use for as long as a couple hours! Hey, it takes time to get everyone in place, ascertain the full scope of the emergency, then start feeding information and instructions out to the media, and from there out onto the now contaminated airwaves. Not to worry...the folks at Homeland Security and FEMA have made available to the media some pre-made (CANNED) messages to keep you calm during this potentially grave period of uncertainty.

STAY OR GO? Based on the above, the odds are, that you need to make this call sooner rather than later. Fact-if (as GNB suspects) it takes a couple of hours for the various agencies to get their act together and give the public its marching orders, full chaos will have already broken out. It is commonsense to believe this...if you hear the sirens, if it is an actual emergency, how long are you going to be sitting idly by waiting on Channel 12 to give you news you can use? If you follow the rules, the best advice on avoiding exposure is putting DISTANCE between you and the source, so EVACUATE.

Grabbing a few carefully chosen possessions, you scoop up Pedro the dog, and race the family down to the street and leap into the mini-van to make your escape. You put the car in gear, drive two blocks and run smack dab into a wall to wall, bumper to bumper traffic jam on Whelcher Street...WHOOPS, the doubters were right, evacuation will not work. With 27 cars now honking behind you, the realization hits...we have to shelter in place.Throwing the car in park, you, Pedro the dog,the wife and kids set off back to the house to shelter in place, abandoning the minivan where it sits.

Safe and secure back in your home,you begin implementation of plan B as the announcer tells you again for the forty third time to stay tuned for breaking news and instructions on this breaking nuclear event. As you are taping off the windows in the attic bedroom you glance towards Indian Point's Domes only to see that one of them is missing, and a large plumb/explosion has lifted up into the sky...breaking into a chilled sweat you scream at your family to move everything down into the basement.

Windows shut and taped over with plastic, the doors locked, you and your family sit huddled together in the basement that has no heat, the children whimpering as you wait for news and updates...so far, all you have gotten from Channel 12, is that you are expected to SHELTER IN PLACE. Do you really think the news that the core has been breached is going to be let out onto the airwaves sooner than later, risking mass hysteria in the New York city area, home to over 20 million people...sorry, no amount of security could control that situation, so they are going to clamp down on the news by throwing up and exclusion zone.

Enter the plain truth...according to the Center for Disease Control, if you shelter in your basement in a typical wood frame house, you, your wife/husband, your children and Pedro the dog are only protected from FORTY PERCENT of the radioactive contaminants in a BEST CASE SCENARIO. Houston, we have a problem! This gives you less than a 50/50 chance of coming out of a significant radiological event and/or terrorist attack unscathed if the NRC and your local officials order you sheltered in place.

Some 12-14 hours into this event you notice your children (who are more susceptible)are vomiting profusely. Somehow, you have to get them to the hospital, so you protect yourselves the best you can, and make a mad dash through the falling radioactive particles to your second car that is parked in the garage. Somehow, you make it through the chaos to the Hudson Valley Medical Center Emergency Room (sponsored by Entergy)that has been recieving MASS CASUALTIES. Citizens are being corraled into roped off areas OUTSIDE the facility in the radioactive fallout area. Sorry, but if you go to the REAC/TS site and read their Radiological Triage document, this is NOT some far out concocted scenerio written by some drug crazed, long haired hippie. The walking wounded, and those who may have been exposed take a second seat to the seriously wounded. Further, the REACT/TS site admits that staff could be over run.

To deal with this reality, emergency planners have been instructed to A) suspend the rule of law in the exclusion zone, and B) have adequate law/military enforcement on the scene at hospitals to control a frenzied, out of control general public...in short, even though your children are exhibiting all the signs of radioactive contamination, it could be hours, even days before they are attended to. They may survive the incident, but they are now a cancer death waiting to happen, months or years later.

The NRC and NEI adit they have far to little knowledge on the effects brittling will have on a reactor core's susceptibility to thermal shock. As a potter, I can tell you a vessel that experiences thermal shock will shatter, plan and simple, sending shards exploding into the atmosphere. With this uncertainty, with the very real fact that sheltering in place only protects you from 40 percent of the fallout, can we really afford to relicense Indian Point for 20 more years?

In February Tenner Films went out to the Navajo reservation in New Mexico/Arizona to do some filming with Navajos living in the midst of one of the biggest uranium mining sites in the world.

Mining ceased there in the 1980s but with the current stock market boom in uranium, there is renewed interest from mining companes who want to restart mining on Navajo land.

The trip was very successful, they met some incredible people including an 89 year old former miner and his family, and got some great footage. A National Call To Action...Host Communities for Failing Reactors Need To UNITE AS ONE

The Constitution of The United States of America combined with the Bill of Rights guarantee Americans certain rights, regardless of what George Bush would have us believe.

One of those rights, is to seek REDRESS via the United States House of Representatives. For far too long, the citizens forced to play host to Nuclear Reactors, such as Entergy's Indian Point or Vermont Yankee have been isolated, forced if you will to act locally while the Nuclear Industry and the NRC rape our communities, spoil our environment, and force us to accept wrong sighted and potentially catastrophic rubber stamping of re licensing applications.

It has long been said and alleged, that the NRC is in the pockets of the Nuclear Industry, that they put their licensees financial interests ahead of the health and safety of citizens in the host communities...never has this fact been more obvious than in the Dog and Pony shows being held to re license almost every aging and decrepit Nuclear Reactor in America...but, this time we have proof, the trail of a deliberate and devious plan to force Nuclear onto the people of America, to rubber stamp the entire re licensing process at these Nuclear Facilities.

The mock public hearings, the song and dance of the process are FALSE, the decisions already made before the paperwork was/is filed. Fire up your GOOGLE search engines, and start piecing together the story. CASEnergy, World Nuclear Association (WNA), DOE-Nuclear 2010, Atlanta 7 and NuStart, Entergy, are just some of the searches that will start telling you the story of turning Nuclear Green, and forcing nuclear upon the unsuspecting masses for at least another century, unless we die before then from a nuclear incident...don't you love that soft sound descriptor of nuclear holocaust? As it is, 50 percent of the population lives within 50 miles of a nuclear reactor...well, for the NIMBY crowd, the time has come for you to join those of us in the No Nuke's fight, as a nuclear reactor is coming to your back yard sooner rather than later, as DOE, NEI, NRC and the money changers in the Nuclear Industry have already decided to re license almost every reactor in America to buy them the time they need to build and deploy a whole new fleet of as many as FOUR HUNDRED MORE of these death traps!

Divide and conquer has been the rule of the day...each reactor site carefully sequestered into a separate LLC so that most of us DO NOT HAVE STANDING, our comments given nothing more than a cursory glance by egomaniacs like the self absorbed and arrogant Neil Sheehan, the turkey gobbler swallower of NRC Region One who far prefers spending his time sequestered away in secret with company hacks than listening to the litany of real concerns from members of the General Public. Divide and conquer so that the cumulative effects of wide spread mismanagement and intimidation on the part of the Entergy management staff is mitigated by keeping the records separate, singular to each separate reactor. Follow the game plan, if the licensee cannot meet the criteria, change the criteria, or exclude the problem areas, such as the NRC deciding to eliminate from inclusion in the re licensing decisions spent fuel, impacts to aquatic life, and topped off by stating ALL DESIGN FLAWS at reactors such as Vermont Yankee and Pilgrim would be GRAND FATHERED IN, so as not to be an issue of contention in the re licensing process.

Access to documents denied us on such issues as security would PROVE that the NRC, DOE, George Bush and the Nuclear Industry have conspired to RUBBER STAMP the wide spread re licensing of aging and failing reactors in the name of the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR, regardless of the risk to OUR human health, and the environment...IE, look at the recent extension of the Price Waterhouse Act. WE in the eyes of the Nuclear Industry, in the eyes of the NRC, in the eyes of the DOE, in the eyes of NEI are EXPENDABLE.

We the people are being laughed at, the three card Monty street scam is on, and every host community in America is A MARK...well, it is time that we change the game, turn the tables on the NRC and on the Nuclear Industry.

First, we as host communities of these flawed and dangerous reactors need to join forces, team together to fight the beast. If we put together a petition for redress as a cohesive group representing the peoples of every town and city being forced to live within the shadow of death of these reactors, Congress CANNOT IGNORE US...there is an election in two years, and they will have no choice but to act on our petition, or know they will be voted out of office in 2008. New York's 19th district Congressman John Hall got elected partially because of his stand on Indian Point, his promise to SHUT IT DOWN. Maurice Hinchey has said he opposes re licensing as well, as has our new Governor, Eliot Spitzer, yet in the past six years almost EIGHT BILLION DOLLARS has been tossed into the laps of the Nuclear Industry...we want IMMEDIATE investigations open, and we want all RE LICENSING PETITIONS put on hold until after said investigations are complete. Until this conspiracy to deceive the public of the host communities, and corrupt the re licensing process is exposed, and those involved prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

We do not stop there...we file a class action lawsuit not just for one community, but for all 104 communities being forced to accept a risk they did not bargain for, should not have to accept....THERE IS POWER IN NUMBERS. No longer would the Entergy's of the world be allowed to mitigate their mistakes, as such a lawsuit would have all their mistakes WEIGHED AS A WHOLE, instead of individual parts separated by a conveniently paper thin LLC separating the mother company from it's Rosemary's babies.

Citizens living in the shadow of Vermont Yankee, Pilgrim, Indian Point and other reactor communities all joining as one... if Neil Sheehan wants to piously suggest we take our complaints to the NRC's Office of the Inspector General, lets do it, and not just one complaint, but thousands, even tens of thousands as we hold meetings to help individual citizens drown the agency, Entergy and the Nuclear Industry under a barrage of our indignation and frustration. Hearings...lets demand them, not just on the re licensing, but on the ENTIRE SHAM that is the re licensing process. It's easy for the NRC to put off and ignore a small group of citizens in each community when they stand alone, but when you put those 20,30 or 40 citizens together with the same number of citizens from the other 103 communities being forced to play host to these death machines, we become a force that can no longer be ignored by the NRC, and by our elected officials. Think about it folks...we can hold the futures of 104 Congressman or Women in our collective hands, perhaps even more...that is a grassroots movement that could not be ignored when we file a petition for redress.

As Arlo Guthrie would say, we are talking a movement, the ANTI RE LICENSING MOVEMENT, and all you have to do to join is sing along...join the force, become part of a NATIONWIDE TEAM that can shut down these reactors, can hold the NRC accountable for their crimes.

To start this movement, the Green Nuclear Butterfly will open up it's blog space to any ANTI NUCLEAR person wanting to get a message out to the world about their own reactor problems...our time of living in the shadows, isolated from those like ourselves has got to come to end. As a team, we can win this fight, but as individual singular communities, we will be mowed down by the Nuclear Industry, and their protectorate, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The time has come for us to NETWORK NATIONWIDE to shut down failing reactors, network to hold the NRC accountable for their crimes against humanity.

Some FACTS That Entergy and The Nuclear Industry Don't Want You To Know

Could this be Ossining, Briarcliff, or Peekskill after an INCIDENT at the Indian Point Plant?

Nuclear Power is a Health, Safety, and Environmental Threat: Cancers, Birth Defects...call them the daughters of the decay chain of radioactive isotopes.

1. In testimony before Congress on April 17, 1985, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission testified that the probability of a substantial nuclear accident in this country over the next 20 years involving large releases of radioactive materials was roughly 45%. Well, there was Chernobyl...could Indian Point be the bullet we fail to dodge? Maybe Vermont Yankee?

2. In February, 1997, a reactor operator error at ComEd's Zion nuclear reactor prompted the Regional head of the NRC to state, "It doesn't get any worse than this." Well, not quite true...seems there is a reactor that came close to having a hole clear through it, but I'll save that story for another post.

3. In March of 1997, in a test that NRC said "requires thinking," 25 of 31 reactor operators at ComEd's La Salle reactors flunked a test of their ability to handle "abnormal" reactor problems.

This is not unusual...many of us that have been following the saga that is Indian Point are familiar with this kind of dismal testing failure on the part of reactor employees.

4. As of April, 1997, Commonwealth Edison has been fined $6.2 million for 85 safety-related incidents at its nuclear power plants. Don't suppose Energy would be willing to openly and honestly tell us how much they have paid out in fines at their 10 reactors?

6. Illinois Power has been fined $502,000 for seven major violations at its single nuclear reactor.

Did you hear the one about the Entergy Reactor Control Room operator asleep at the button?...how much was that fine? $60,000? How much was the fine was shipping a contaminated part off to Barnwell improperly shielded?

7. According to a study done by Sandia National Laboratories, a severe (but not necessarily "worst-case") nuclear power accident in Illinois would result in deaths in the tens-of-thousands, casualties and latent cancers in the hundreds-of-thousands, and property loss in the tens-to hundreds-of-billions of dollars. Not to worry folks...Thanks to your United States Congress, and George W. Bush, the Price Waterhouse Act limits the liability of the reactor owner to NINE BILLION!

Nuclear Power is NOT Economical:

1. Since its beginning, nuclear power has cost this country over $492,000,000,000 (THAT IS BILLIONS FOLKS)--nearly twice the cost of the Viet Nam War and the Apollo Moon Missions combined. It even makes the Iraq War, and Bush's failed policies there seem like a bargain.

2. In return for this investment, we have an energy source that, until the mid-1980's, gave us less energy in this country than did the burning of firewood! Not to mentions the MILLIONS of tons of CO2 pumped into the environment to make the fuel rods! Oh, but wait a minute, the DOE, NRC and the Nuclear Industry don't want you to know about that...ruins their GREEN IMAGE.

3. In the U.S., nuclear power contributes only 20-22% of our electricity, and only 8-10% of our total energy consumption. At it's peak in December of 1999, the nuclear industry accounted for 23 percent of the energy on the grid...however, as the aging fleet of reactors begin breaking down, contaminating our environment, and having problems, the percentages have been dropping, even when Entergy is pushing their ten reactors to the breaking point. In April of 2006 for instance, the percentage was down to 19.5...this figure will continue to decrease as some of the decrepit reactors are denied relicensing...Further, Nuclear Reactors are not the GREAT SAVIOR NuStart would have us believe...ten-fifteen years it will take to start getting new reactors online, and they would not be able to provide the quick help the world needs to REVERSE GLOBAL WARMING...did I mention the waste streams?

4. Since 1950, nuclear power has received over $97,000,000,000 in direct and indirect subsidies from the federal government, such as deferred taxes, artificially low limits on liability in case of nuclear accidents, and fuel fabrication write-offs. No other industry has enjoyed such privilege.

5. Many costs for nuclear power have been deliberately underestimated by government and industry such as costs for the permanent disposal of nuclear wastes, the "decommissioning" (shutting-down and cleaning-up) of retired nuclear power plants, and nuclear accident consequences.

John Wheeler, Shill For Nuclear Industry At It Again

John Wheeler, the Nuclear Industry's self appointed shill is at it again over on his "This Week in Nuclear Blog...no link included. Seems he's jumped into the fray with other nuclear industry hacks bent on blowing me and my blog OUT OF THE WATER, using fear and hidden threats to silence the voice of reason where the failing Indian Point Nuclear plant is concerned. Funny how no one in the world cared what I wrote about until I started writing about Indian Point, NuStart, Entergy and the DOE Nuclear 2010 plan created by the same man who brought us the Iraq War, George W. Bush. Now I have invisible people putting up attack pages here on blogspot, and instead of attacking what I have to say, the NUCLEAR INDUSTRY and those who support it have stooped to outing my wife, outing not only her real name, but where she works...my wife has NOTHING TO DO WITH MY OPINIONS, but that does not matter...using her is a convenient threat...a quiet way of saying, we can HURT YOU, and WE WILL. What's next, bricks through my front window?

Now Wheeler attacked me on his weekly podcast several weeks ago...episode #38 if my memory serves me correctly. Sure he would swear he is not tracking/stalking me, yet he suddenly is blogging about what is going on, adding fuel to an ever growing fire. Problem is, he speaks half truths, speaks with a forked tongue, and uses subterfuge to SCARE PEOPLE into believing Nuclear Energy, Indian Point are safe, secure, vital, and the only REAL CHOICE as we move forward. Plain and simple, in my opinion, WHEELER IS WRONG, fooled, coerced, perhaps bought off by the industry that has supported his comfortable way of life for decades now, clothed his children, paid for their education, probably purchased his house.

He claims that Nuclear Energy is CO2 free...the gaseous diffusion plant in Portsmouth Ohio where much of the enriched uranium created in the past 50 years came from, required NINE utility companies (who burned coal) to supply and meet their electrical needs...the Portsmouth plant at full operational speed required daily enough electricity to power Los Angeles County for one year. Suppose that Mr. Wheeler does not want to count that in Nuclear Industry Waste streams? Curious...Indian Point pumps 2.5 BILLION gallons of water out of the Hudson River daily, returns it to said river WARMER than when it went in. Has Mr. Wheeler done any statistical investigations on the CULMALATIVE EFFECTS on global warming from over 400 reactors world wide dumping that much HEATED WATER back into our rivers, that in turn carry their now warmed waters to the oceans?

OK...how about the BILLIONS of pounds of depleted uranium? I've driven around the Gaseous Diffusion plant in Ohio. What about all the contaminated plant parts sent to Barnwell? You know John, like the one that Entergy sent off that was improperly WRAPPED...want to talk about the worker exposed to the dangerous exposures from that incident? How about the problem with the part they sent to another facility...want to discuss that? Or, how about the near accident in Texas where DOD workers tired and overworked almost detonated a nuclear bomb 100 times more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima.

He puts forward RED HERRING arguments to support his cause, his pay DADDIES cause, such as when he talks about an oil pipeline explosion/fire that killed hundreds of people...we all remember that news story. What Mr. Wheeler fails to tell us, is that explosion occurred because people were trying to TAP INTO THE SYSTEM TO STEAL FUEL. Try some truthiness there Mr. Wheeler. By the way, how much waste does a single reactor create on a yearly basis Mr. Wheeler? Think I recall it averages about 4 metric tons. So, 104 reactors here in America, that's 416 Metric tons of WASTE (that the DOE cannot for the life of itself figure out what to do with...Yucca is not going to happen, you and I both know that) times say only 50 years. That starts adding up. Of course, that does not include ANY DECOMMISSIONING WASTE, does not include any of the parts that have to be sent to Barnwell, which has some serious SPACE PROBLEMS Mr. Wheeler. Curious....how much waste from the Nuclear Industry is already stored at Envirocare, or at nuclear sites all around the country?

By the way...speculation on the limited world wide supply of Uranium has pushed the price up to over $100 a pound...has any one done any charts and analysis to figure out how long our world supply would last at current usage rates, let alone PROJECTED USAGE RATES? Sure, lets make the same mistake we made with fossil fuels of putting ALL OUR EGGS in a FINITE BASKET...makes perfect sense....NOT. Renewable energy...that leaves NUCLEAR OUT. Let me guess, you are going to tell us scientists are working on some "Lost in Space" plan to mine additional product from some asteroid yet to be found? Maybe start mining the moon once George Bush gets his permanent base built up there? OH! maybe when he gets that base up there, the Nuclear Industry has plans to SHIP OUR WASTE THERE, since no one would be there to object?

By the way...affordable...care to share with our readers how much of the cost of subsidizing the planned Nuclear Rebirth is being paid for with our taxes compliments of DOE matching funds? Care to share with our readers how we are screwed if a major incident does happen, since the Price Waterhouse Act protects the nuclear industry from the costs incurred in the aftermath of said MAJOR INCIDENT...that coupled with that nice little exclusion on our insurance policies for nuclear attacks and or accidents pretty well screws EVERY PROPERTY OWNER in a host area if they live through said incident. Sure, you and other shills like you just keep beating those drums and telling people Indian Point and the nuclear industry is safe, secure and vital. Meanwhile, as I know those attacking me are reading my blog, show some class....you don't like my views, I can live with that...leave my wife out of the fight. Attack my version of events, prove me wrong...prove to me that Indian Point is safe, secure and vital, prove to me you can figure out what to do with the waste streams they create. Prove to me that the Nuclear Industry, the NRC and our government would MAKE US WHOLE after a major incident...they sure have failed that task in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina! I am not interested in being another New Orleans, where we are told like sheep we are safe, that Indian Point is safe until the worst case scenario DOES HAPPEN....we already lived through 9/11, that was enough for me...especially considering the NRC's dismal record of protecting Human Health and the Environment. Some of you want to complain that your comments don't get posted...then start IDENTIFYING YOURSELVES, instead of hiding like stinking fetid rats on a sinking ship. You know who I am, I want the world to know who you are...if you love NUCLEAR SO MUCH, then identify yourselves.

By the way Riverkeeper, IPSEC, Green Peace and the grassroots movement...Entergy sponsors almost every MAJOR EVENT at the Paramount Center in the City of Peekskill...why not start holding mini protests at those events to bring attention to this issue? There's one coming up at the end of January...be a good place to start the process of SHUTTING DOWN INDIAN POINT.

Further, the alternative energies that could be employed to replace Indian Point would bring jobs to the area. Discussion of alternative energy sources...such as wind and solar? Perhaps if George Bush were not throwing Billions of dollars at the Nuclear Industry with his Nuclear 2010 program, many of those alternative energies options could be much further down the road to reality. Indian Point, Entergy, NuStart, DOE, NRC, Electric Cars, Green Models OH MY!

If my readers ears have been ringing, it is not surprising...seems that my article on Summer Rayne's connection to ETS Energy Store, then ETS Energy Store's connections to BGA Engineering, coupled with BGA's ties to Indian Point have sounded those NON WORKING SIRENS over at Indian Point. If you are shaking your head wishing you had a program, don't feel alone, as this story gets more confusing with each passing radioactive contaminate escaping the failing Indian Point facility. It is time for us within the Green Movement to demand that our heroes, those we look up to, live up to the GREEN MANTLE they have chosen to wear. Summer Rayne must make a choice, as do others within the Green business community, and the larger community as a whole, including politicians like Congressman John Hall. You cannot claim to be GREEN, and embrace the dangerous and environmentally destructive Nuclear Industry.

Grist has gone so far as to proclaim Summer Rayne the Hottest eco-model on the horizon, some have even gone so far as to proclaim her the FIRST LADY of the environment, so finding her even indirectly associated with Indian Point is BIG NEWS in the Green Fashion Industry, or at least should be. This young (supposedly) social entrepreneur is in high demand, even showing up at the Vanity Fair "Green Issue" Party in an outfit that hinted of cream sickles melting on a globally warm day. Eco Models like Summer Rayne Oakes and Betcee, as well as other eco/social entrepreneurs such as Seth Leitman of ETS Energy Store have to realize that there is a responsibility that comes with the money and fame they seek in cloaking themselves and their business enterprises in the GREEN MANTLE of the grassroots environmental movement. To be GREEN, you have to ACT GREEN in all you say and do, or be labeled for what you are, which is a hypocrite.

In a nutshell, you cannot use the Green Movement and what it represents when it is convenient, cannot put on the Green Mantle like some costume or fashion accessory worn on SPECIAL OCCASIONS. If you are green, you make GREEN DECISIONS, and NUCLEAR IS NOT GREEN in any way, shape or fashion. CASEnergy, DOE, NRC, Entergy, NuStart and a host of other power players would like to use the GREEN MANTLE and people like Summer Rayne to remake the nuclear industry, but it cannot and will not be allowed, the nuclear industry must not be allowed to steal that which is not theirs to own. NuStart and the DOE would like to use the GREEN Industry (willingly or through stealth) to help them remake Nuclear into the Green ENERGY of the future, to replace NO NUKES with NO CO2's in getting the American Public to give said nuclear industry a second chance THEY DO NOT DESERVE. The game is afoot, and the alarm bells must be rung, those who have been tired and worn must come out of retirement as we push back this attempt to build a whole new generation of FAILED REACTORS. The elders of the GREEN MOVEMENT must come forward, act as mentors to this new young GREEN MOVEMENT before they are corrupted by the money changers in the halls of the Nuclear Industry, and governmental agencies willing to sell out human health and the environment for their own sick and sadistic machinations.

Don't think that the Green Nuclear Butterfly is singling out just a few Eco-Models as examples, as it is not just them, or certain players in the GREEN FASHION INDUSTRY who need to take a VERY PUBLIC STAND against Nuclear Power, NuStart, Entergy and the failing Indian Point Reactors. New York's new governor Eliot Spitzer has all but guaranteed the closure of Indian Point, promised to stand with fellow Indian Point oppenent, and newly elected Freshman Congressman John Hall (of Orleans Fame). Older members of Congress like Congressman Maurice Hinchey need to stand up in a very public way, must act as crusaders to not only SHUT DOWN INDIAN POINT, but to UNFUND George Bush's Nuclear 2010 plan for a whole new generation of reactors. More local politicians such as Westchester County Commissioner Andy Spano need to stop speaking with forked tongues, need to stand up on a stage before national news cameras and state that Indian Point WILL BE CLOSED, even if local law enforcement have to chain shut the gates to do it. Promising SWIFT ACTION to CLOSE INDIAN POINT can no longer be an empty campaign promise used to win over the GRASSROOTS, but must be followed by serious actions, including public outcry in front of the cameras on the six o'clock news.

How many famous musicians were on the Campaign Trail with Congressman John Hall singing out about the ills of Nuclear Energy, and bringing our troops home. They awakened our spirit in the grassroots again, gave us hope of better days ahead. The election is over, but those musicians have to realize they CANNOT, MUST NOT walk away and abandon the issues, abandon the people they energized. Pete Seeger, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, The Mammals, and even John Hall himself have a civic duty to LEAD THE FIGHT to CLOSE INDIAN POINT. Why aren't these musicians working with a group like Rock The Reactors to hold a MAJOR CONCERT to focus attention on this failing nuclear industry, and their 104 aging reactors, with Indian Point perched on top of the list as one of, if not the worst nuclear site in the entire world besides Chernobyl?

Imagine the INTERNATIONAL PRESS ATTENTION that could be focused on Entergy's failing reactors at Indian Point if New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, Congressmen Hall and Hinchey were flanked by super models Betcee and Summer Rayne, with the entire group backed up by the likes of Pete Seeger, Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt...THAT IS FRONT PAGE NEWS, that is prime time 6:00 PM on ABC, CBS, NBC, BCC, CNN and even die hard Bush Channel FOX. In short, that group of people standing together in a unified voice could ROCK THE REACTORS, could shut down Indian Point...but, that requires them to be leaders, requires them to be socially conscious beings, requires them to stand on the side of right and justice against all odds, and if they do that, groups like Green Peace, Riverkeeper, Sierra Club and others will be right there beside them as we do what must be done, which is close Indian Point, and pull the plug on a failed industry. It's the right thing to do.

Green Nuclear Butterfly is racing to catch up, as Entergy and the Pro-Nuclear scums have a huge jump on us...IE, George Bush has given the Nuclear Industry some 8 BILLION plus dollars in subsidies since he took office, and is pushing a DOE initiative called Nuclear 2010 which would eventually site over ONE HUNDRED NEW REACTORS in America, the lion's share of the costs paid for WITH OUR TAXES, though the Utility companies would keep 100 percent of the profits.

Citizens opposed to this Nuclear Proliferation, opposed to the RAPING OF OUR ENVIRONMENT, opposed to subsidizing a FAILING INDUSTRY need a place to post their own issues, to write their own concerns. ETS Energy Store-Green Nuclear Sell Out?

Summer Rayne Oakes Tied Into Nuclear Industry, Entergy, and Indian Point? Say It Ain't So Joe.

The title could almost tell this story, mix in a famous GREEN FASHION SUPER MODEL in one Summer Rayne, toss with green guy in need of money Seth Leitman with his big dreams, sprinkle liberally with a couple guys with deep pockets and direct links to Indian Point, and you have a earth shattering news story that could shake the Green Fashion and Product Industry to its very foundations, a story that can only be know as Green Nuclear Sell Out.

First, the SUPER MODEL END of the story. Any one that is any one in the green fashion industry knows self styled Green Vixen and business Mogul Summer Rayne, the super model with a genius brain, the self described Eco friendly super chick with a Masters Degree to back up her claims. From her ever so humble roots buried deep in the green hills of Pennsylvania, she has clawed and fought her way to the top of the proverbial compost heap, the queen of all that is green. If one trots over to the ETS Energy Store, you'll find Summer Rayne's beautiful little foot prints dancing all around the site. Her track record so far shows a woman with a plan, someone who does not get duped easily, but perhaps she did? Just how did this super GREEN model end up hooked up with an online GREEN STORE that has partners with direct ties to Entergy and Indian Point? Only the readers can answer that question, unless Summer Rayne would like to meet for an interview over... (something healthy I am thinking, hard for a Scotch drinker) some green tea and energy bars?

What I can tell the readers, is rumor, unsubstantiated musings based on some reliable sources. Supposedly, another well known GREEN MODEL better known as Betcee, the poster child for the "Shut Down Indian Point" movement by proxy, if not by choice was going to do the shoot for the ETS Energy Store, but backed out...did she of the magical mind and soul find out something that changed her mind? Again, not being in a position to ask her directly, we can only ponder. With Betcee out of the picture, through some machinations, it is this writers understanding that one Super Green Model Summer Rayne stepped in and did the shoot for a few good reasons, such as OLD FRIENDS, and perhaps this false sense of security is what kept her from doing due deligence?

Again, we cannot know, but perhaps the key lays in one Seth Leitman, self proclaimed green guy and according to his blog, the creator, brainchild and President of ETS Energy Store. From the various links found on Google, the skinny on Seth is pretty straight forward, a boring story about someone with a passion for electric cars, a tree hugging kind of guy that wanted to make a leap to the big time, wanted to launch a whole GREEN STORE, offer up earth friendly products to a hungry group of tree hugging green free spirits...sure there is more to this story, but this is enough to lay a ground work for the hypothesis that comes next.

Hiring Super Models, even green ones and doing photo shots costs MONEY, and quite a bit of it. Then you have a very sophisticated web site that needs designed and launched, and if you call their 1 (800) number, ETS Energy Store even has their own answering service to take orders and answer questions in the late hours of the night...WE ARE TALKING BIG BUCKS! Green Nuclear Butterfly has it on good authority that ETS Energy Store has some partners, that Seth Leitman found people willing to put up the money he needed to launch his Green financial empire...the question becomes, does a green guy, does the green industry have a responsibility to the world, and to their green consumer base to only use GREEN INVESTORS, only partner up with other services that ARE GREEN? Seth Leitman's fate, and perhaps the fate of ETS Energy Store will be weighed in how that question is answered.

Some might feel the answer to that question is NO, but for most within the grassroots environmental movement, the green friendly universe if you will, expect our green retailers, service providers and green models to make green business decisions, and have green friendly partnerships. If you are in this later group, this story starts to take a sad, tragic and ugly turn.

You see, if my sources are correct, and I believe they are, you have a Super Green Model basically fronting for a company (ETS Energy Store) that is partially owned by people directly associated with, working for the Nuclear Industry, and Indian Point. Being part of the tree hugging green horde myself, and obviously one who is not overly friendly towards Indian Point, Entergy and a flawed nuclear industry, this association BOTHERED ME, was tugging at my soul, screaming quietly that something was not quite right...so, I did some more Googling and my suspicions were born out when I found these little clues found on BGA Engineering's website:

There it is, the tale is told, the smoking gun that ties Summer Rayne, Seth Lietman, and the ETS Energy Store into Indian Point, Entergy and the environmentally deplorable Nuclear Industry...question becomes, who knew what when, and who sold out to whom...if Seth Leitman made a deal with the devil and partnered up with these two men knowing of their ties to the nuclear industry, ETS Energy Store is anything but environmentally friendly and green. Even worse, what if all of this is a part of the Atlanta 7 conspiracy, what if some of the players in this tale are actually tied into NuStart and their plan to STEAL THE GREEN MOVEMENT for the nuclear industry. Are there innocents in this story? I think she should have known better, but I have to believe that Summer Rayne was duped, the victim of a naive mistake of trust. I think some of the other players not mentioned by name in this tale, such as those who organized and did the photo shot with Summer Rayne (Jon Mack, the photographer Eric Striffler) got taken in, had no clue who the men behind the green masks really were, though I would like to hear it from their lips. If the tale is true, then what about Betcee...she was a no show for the shoot, backed out with no reason...if she knew, surely she had a duty to put out the word?

There is probably more to this story, mysteries that shall unravel as days turn into weeks and the winter snow begins to fall, but for now I leave you with this simple warning. The NuStart Consortium and others within the Nuclear Industry are bent on taking our Green Mantle as their own, and pushing us off to the side...the time has come to be vigilent in our actions, and in our business dealings. We all know the propaganda slogan...Entergy Nuclear Plants are safe, secure and vital...are they really? According to a decision handed down by the NRC, seems like Entergy's slogan needs altered a bit to be Safe, Secure and Asleep, and safe and secure are up for some serious debate as well.

WASHINGTON, DC (ENS) — --> The Nuclear Regulatory Commission today proposed a $60,000 civil penalty for Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc., for violations that occurred at the Pilgrim nuclear power plant on June 29, 2004 when a control room supervisor fell asleep in a chair while on duty.

After the NRC learned of the event, the agency’s Region I Office of Investigations began an investigation at the plant, which is located in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Investigators determined that the control room supervisor was asleep and therefore neither alert nor attentive to his duties. A reactor operator, observing the supervisor asleep, deliberately failed to take immediate actions to awaken him, inform appropriate site personnel and file a report on the event, investigators found.

The shift manager, "in careless disregard of requirements," the NRC said, failed to inform appropriate site personnel and file a report on the event.

Though this blogger has not been able to figure out the list of lobbyists (hired guns) working for this vile and repugnant group of villains, we have learned they are being VERY SUCCESSFUL, as NuStart was successful in getting our elected officials to cough up HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS of OUR MONEY to support their research and cause. This fact is very alarming, as Entergy's original BLUE PRINT for this cloak and dagger rape of a nation was to EXTRACT FEDERAL DOLLARS to pay for their research and to RECRUIT the government in their campaign of deceit in selling host communities on the new plants economic benefits, while dismissing as minor any risks associated with these fatally flawed facilities, as Chernobyl has shown us. With reactors, contrary to this new effort to change the perceptions, we are playing Russian Roulette, with it not being a question of if, but rather when.

They have already successfully fleeced our pockets to the tune of over $200 MILLION dollars, with hopes of getting the 110th Congress to cough up EVEN MORE. They have recruited a power house Public Relations firm, and have been bringing on board some serious shills who are more than willing to sell their souls for the Gold Crowns King. Also in process we have Dominion Nuclear -- which is not a member of NuStart -- at its North Anna plant in Virginia. Thinking of jumping into the fray is Duke Energy of Charlotte, North Carolina. Each of these sites conveniently would use the reactor designs paid for with OUR TAX DOLLARS, but owned by the NuStart Consortium of PLANET RAPERS. (whoops...too harsh? Should I tone that statement down so as not to offend Entergy officials?) Though NuStart has already reached DEEP INTO OUR POCKETS for over $200 MILLION in Federal Government incentives, the reader should know, that all these players have stated for the record, that they need CONGRESS to continue subsidizing their costs of construction if these PROPOSED REACTORS are going to become reality.

Imagine a governmental agency (such as the NRC?) drawing up plans to squash, quell any and all green opposition to burying Nuclear Waste and building NEW REACTORS. Launching a covert operation to launch false support by using third parties to bring pressure on certain key committees who are investigating certain key issues in the process. Enlisting politicians sympathetic to their cause (uhhh...like Rudi Guiliani and Christine Todd Whitman?) while attempting to isolate those who are not (such as Congressmen Hinchey and Hall?). Just such a devious plan was created, implemented and uncovered in England, and the foot prints here in America lead any anal retentive chimp tripping on LSD, let alone a reasonable thinking person to believe that the Nuclear Industry here in America is using even more devious efforts in trying to turn public tide in favor of more reactors, in favor of Yucca Mountain as a DUMP SITE.

First, for years the nuclear industry and our taxes have supported all kinds of pro-nuclear organizations, non-profit even quasi government groups that get hand picked to do supposedly impartial investigations, even play key roles in the supposed force on force (MOCK) tests at nuclear facilities. Take a look at NEI, their relationship with the Nuclear Industry, their incestuous relationship with the NRC, and you'll find some very disturbing trends, such as their ability to funnel crucial advance information to the owners of nuclear facilities before every force on force test at a Nuclear Reactor...can hear NEI protesting now, "BUT we would never do that." Funny, can NEI and/or the NRC share with us who is in charge of the security forces CHOSEN to be the mock attackers? Talk about a CONFLICT OF INTEREST.

Wells' comments also suggested a potential conflict of interest in how simulations of terrorist attacks are conducted. The potential conflict arises, he stated, from the fact the NRC is considering hiring the "terrorist" impersonators from a firm that was selected by the nuclear industry's own trade association, the Nuclear Energy Institute, and that already provides security guards to half the plants where such exercises are to be conducted.

Then, they need some friendly face, so they buy them...what a better person to embrace Entergy's relicensing than Rudi, America's Mayor? They have supposed GREEN FOLK who, for a price, have sold their souls to the beast, including disgraced co-founder of Green Peace, and Christine Todd Whitman who has created a special group to line her pockets with GOLD, or is that the proverbial 35 pieces of silver? Think about it, the perfect Three Stooges poster children of the nuclear PR campaign to GREEN THEIR DEATH TRAPS. A Former EPA Head and a Greenpeace Co-Founder Lead a New Coalition Promoting Nuclear Energy in the U.S. Add in a touch of RUDI, and stir lightly.


There are other devious steps being taken as well. Entergy will want to deny it, but they have harnessed their entire WORK FORCE as a Pro-Nuclear Burning Grassroots Army of vapid pro nuclear attack rats. They have their employees (the brighter ones) writing letters to the editor, and tracking the Anti-Nuke's online, leaping on almost every post we put up, poking fun at us on their I POD radio shows distributed to the folks within the industry...in short, targeting us.

Others are organized to show up at every public protest against Nuclear with their own banners and signs produced by and paid for with Entergy DOLLARS...in short, they are creating a false facade of public support by using their employees, their employees spouses and children as SHIELDS, much the way Hezbollah hides behind and uses the populace as human shields for their terrorist attacks. What once was suspected can now be proved, as Entergy won a FIRST TIME award for their efforts just last year...we happened to stumble across their press release on it. Couple this with their attempts to spread money around to win support...IE, their financial backing of the Paramont Theatre in Peekskill, and you have an industry trying to buy RELICENSING, BUY the new licenses needed to build a whole new army of reactors such as the one Entergy and GE are now trying to push through down in Louisiana.

If Rosie O'Donnell thinks Donald Trump is a snake oil salesman, she should spend some time researching the executives at almost any company involved in perpetuating, supporting and embracing Nuclear Energy as a GREEN FRIENDLY industry, as it is a LIE. Flim Flam artists and industry shills such as Christine Todd Whitman and Rudi Guiliani who have sold their souls for a golden parachute should be ashamed of themselves...people that should be standing staunchly behind CLOSING INDIAN POINT have become traitors to justice, human safety and our environment. Problem is, just like in England, your industry can run, but it cannot hide as we will dig, we will search, and we will EXPOSE the truth, as we are The Green Nuclear Butterfly. WOW...flashbacks of Muhammad Ali, we float like a butterfly but sting like a bee.

Then we have the entire Nuclear Industry getting nostalgic and going back to the early days of the industry and borrowing a page from history...in short, they are TEAMING TOGETHER, spreading the costs and risks of a whole new line of reactors. They are trying to attach these new reactors to the GREEN MOVEMENT by presenting them as the birth mothers and driving force of a whole new Hydrogen green movement, and all the while quietly lining up GOVERNMENTAL FINANCIAL support to subsidize the industry and their new reactors...that's right, LETS GET THEIR TAXES TO BUILD OUR REACTORS, or at least to offset a great deal of the costs. Your a shrewd one Mr. Grinch, I'll give you that!

Revealed: the nuclear waste agencys undercover plans

A covert campaign to ensure that opposition to burying waste was overcome has angered anti-nuclear groups and raised questions about the tactics of a government agency.

Plans to launch a covert campaign to overturn sustained opposition to burying nuclear waste and pave the way for a new generation of nuclear power stations were drawn up by a government agency, it has been revealed.

The proposals included putting "third party pressure" on a separate government committee given the task of investigating the issue, "enlisting" politicians sympathetic to their cause and "isolating" those who were not.

Nirex, the government agency responsible for the disposal of radioactive waste, also produced a list of MPs, MSPs, civil servants and journalists to lobby about disposing the waste produced by nuclear power stations.

The agency has admitted drawing up the "media and public affairs strategy" but insists it was merely a draft put together by a junior member of staff and that some of the suggested tactics were not used.

The UK government-appointed Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) has accepted the Nirex proposals and overturned previous opposition to the burying of nuclear waste. Its recommendations are expected to be used by Tony Blair to support his plans for a revived nuclear power industry, which would have been held back because of uncertainty over how to deal with the waste.
