Robert Kennedy Jr. on nukes!

"According to Terry Tamminen, former director of the California EPA, the true costs of our oil dependence run as high as $807 billion a year – or $2,700 for every U.S. citizen. If all the hidden costs that Americans currently pay for oil were reflected in the price at the pump, gasoline would cost more than $13 a gallon. In short, taxpayers and consumers are essentially giving the oil industry a subsidy of $10 for every gallon of gas sold in America. If we simply eliminated those subsidies and created a truly free market, renewable sources of energy would beat oil – as well as nuclear power and coal, which receive equally grotesque subsidies. It is only through these giant subsidies that gasoline has a prayer of competing with alternative sources such as biofuels and wind, which produce energy far more cleanly and efficiently, at far less cost."

Kazuyuki Takemoto ~ I told you so!

Anti-Nuke Who's Who

Kazuyuki Takemoto: changing nuclear policy from the regions

By Noritomo Nagase*

The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is the largest NPP in the world, with 7 reactors and a total power output of 8,212 MWe. It was built by the largest electric power company in Japan, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).

Kashiwazaki City and Kariwa Village are located 250 km north west of the capital, Tokyo. The area has a population of 100,000 people and is surrounded by mountains and sea. It is mainly a region of paddy fields, but there was oil drilling there 100 years ago and some related machinery industry remains. The plan for a nuclear power plant was announced in 1969, just when agriculture began to decline.
Kazuyuki Takemoto was born in 1950, the oldest son of a farmer whose farm was near the NPP site. A farmer himself and also a technologist involved in agricultural construction, Kazuyuki is engaged in survey, planning and design work related to water and soil. He is also involved in flood response and post-earthquake recovery planning. He has opposed the NPP plan ever since it was announced, taking the view that "nuclear energy is dangerous and will ruin the local community". He has been campaigning now for over 35 years. During that period he was a local councilor for 6 terms, for a total of 24 years.
Besides protesting the all too frequent nuclear accidents, in 1979 the movement against the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa NPP initiated a lawsuit for the annulment of the plant's license. This lawsuit is still continuing. It has been campaigning against the pluthermal plan since 1997 and is also campaigning on the problem of electro-magnetic radiation associated with high voltage transmission cables.
More than 20 years have passed since the first reactor at Kashiwazaki commenced operations. Aging is a big issue and numerous cracks have appeared in the pipes and structural components of reactor cores. Kazuyuki is a key member of the movement, employing the wealth of knowledge he has picked up from experts to home in on TEPCO's weak points. Consequently, he is a very busy man.
Kariwa Village, where Kazuyuki lives, has a population of 5,000 people. One in every four families has a family member who makes his or her living at the NPP or at a related company. It is like a castle town, totally dependent on the castle, though in this case the castle is the NPP. But it was this same Kariwa Village which, in 2001, held a referendum and a majority voted against the pluthermal1 plan. This achievement was brought about by the joint efforts of many people within the movement.
Kazuyuki studied geology and seismology and in 1974 drew attention to the poor quality of the ground on which the NPP stands, pointing out that the NPP would not withstand a powerful earthquake. Ever since, he has been arguing with TEPCO, which built the plant, and the government, which approved the license, about the NPP's earthquake resistance. The Niigata Prefecture Chuetsu Earthquake occurred in October 2004. Now, the ability of the plant to withstand earthquakes has become the issue of greatest concern in the area. Recently, people working at the NPP have begun to give inside information to the anti-nuclear energy movement in Kashiwazaki and Kariwa. This is evidence that the movement, which has been campaigning for all these years, is trusted in the local area. The Kashiwazaki Kariwa anti-nuclear energy movement hopes to change nuclear policy from the regions. Kazuyuki Takemoto sees nuclear energy as war technology, which began with Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He believes that it is incompatible with human peace and environmental preservation. He is engaged in the movement against nuclear energy, because he believes that society must rid itself of nuclear energy as soon as it possibly can.
1. The term 'pluthermal' refers to the use of plutonium in the form of 'mixed oxide' (MOX) fuel in light water reactors.* Noritomo Nagase is a local councilor in Kariwa local council. He has worked with Kazuyuki Takemoto against the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant from the beginning.

Quake Stabilizers Could Be In Trouble At Japan Reactor

The news keeps getting worse at the world's largest nuclear reactor site owned by the Tokyo Electric Company in Japan...seems they have over 50 know issues, including BURST PIPES to deal with. The Green Nuclear Butterfly is on the case, and after speaking with one of our sources, we believe that the Shock Stabilizers on which these reactors were built have now been significantly compromised.

Our source used too work for Underwater Construction of Essex, Connecticut. Further, he actually did some welding work at the nuclear site in Japan. All the reactors were constructed in a fashion that they sit on these shock stabilizers, which are basically large shock absorbers meant to cushion the reactors, and give them some movement mobility during a earthquake. Problem is, the 6.8 Richter earthquake that hit on Monday FAR EXCEEDED the Design Basis for said stabilizers, and it is this former Underwater Construction employee's educated belief, that all the stabilizers have been compromised, thus placing the entire nuclear facility and its numerous (seven)reactors in grave jeopardy should a quake of similar magnitude strike near the facility.
In short, Tokyo Electric Power company may have dodged the bullet during this earthquake, but the long term viability of the entire facility is now very questionable, and the Japanese government should order all seven reactors shut down permanently unless the company can prove conclusively that said earthquake stabilizers have not been compromised in any way.
Meanwhile, the folks over at NEI are already trying to do damage control by spinning the incident in a different light, posting false assurances to members of the public who foolishly follow their blog...check out the spin miesters yourselves:

Japanese Quake Delivers Devastating Blow to Nuclear Renaissance?

Could we be watching the beginning of the end of GNEP, and the Nuclear Renaissance that is being trumpeted by the Bush Administration as the aftermath of the earthquake in Japan unfolds?

In early reports out of Japan, we heard about a minor fire at the world's largest nuclear plant. Then, we were told there had been a very insignificant leak (a few pints)of radioactive contaminants inside the plant. Then we found out that there had been off site contamination. Next, a few liters of radioactive waste became, in the blink of and eye well over 300 gallons dumped into the sea. The next shoe to drop was the news that the Tokyo Electric Power Company and the Japanese government had hidden the truth from the populace for many hours.

Now today, we find out even more bad news (or good if you are anti nuclear). Seems that the quake far exceeded the plants DB plans, was well above the criteria the plants were designed to withstand, which raises some very serious concerns, or should raise some serious concerns. Additionally, Japan has announced the launch of a second leak investigation...which means, the structural stability of these reactors is now in question. Do we have a cracked core? Has the entire underground piping system been compromised? If there is a second leak, how significant is it, and can they even locate it so that repairs can be made?

In short, people that own stocks in companies like Entergy or Exelon might be wise to dump their investments, as a significant structural problem at Tokyo Electtrics reactor site will send shock waves through the nuclear industry.

Japan quake toll at nine; nuclear plant still shut
BBC reports that a second radioactive leak is being probed
By MarketWatch
Last Update: 5:43 AM ET Jul 17, 2007
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- The world's largest nuclear power plant by output capacity remained closed Tuesday, after seismometers indicated the magnitude 6.7 earthquake that hit northwestern Japan Monday produced shocks that exceeded the reactors' design strength, according to media reports.

The quake was reportedly the strongest ever detected at a domestic nuclear reactor.
Second leak being probed: BBC
Water containing radioactive material is already known to have leaked from the plant into the sea after that quake, but officials say it will not harm the environment. And Japanese officials are investigating the possibility of a second radioactive leak from the plant, the BBC reported on its Web site.

Indian Point is Built on Earthquake Fault Line...Reactors Will Break Apart

The NRC decades ago opted to EXEMPT Indian Point from the citing criteria, allowed the now failing reactors to be built on an earthquake fault line...face it, when the BIG QUAKE hits, we are all in serious trouble unless we shut the plants now.

Japanese Government, Tokyo Electric HIDE Radioactive Leak FROM PUBLIC

In shades of an NRC cover up that Bush would be proud of, seems that the Government of Japan, and the Tokyo Electric Company kept the public in the dark about hundreds of gallons of radioactive materials spewing into the sea after the early morning earthquake. Seems that Japan has taken a page out of the NEI/NRC play book...if there is and accident, try to cover it up, and keep the news from the general public for as long as you can. Which explains why it is that NRC/DOE and FEMA have a whole bunch of FAKE news pieces in the can for when the major nuclear incident hits here in America, more than likely at Indian Point, since Entergy's failing reactor on the Hudson is a serious target for results minded terrorists around the world. After all, if we knew the truth, we would NEVER voluntarily shelter in place, but like lambs to slaughter, that is just what Entergy and the NRC have planned for us...sheltering in place, sentencing us to slow deaths with a skant 40 percent level of protection from the fallout after a terrorist attack, or significant incident at the plant. Guess the money players in Japan were thinking along similiar strategy lines in keeping the public stupid today.

KASHIWAZAKI, Japan (AP) - A strong earthquake shook Japan's northwest coast Monday, setting off a fire at the world's most powerful nuclear power plant and causing a reactor to spill radioactive water into the sea - an accident not reported to the public for hours.

The 6.8-magnitude temblor killed at least 8 people and injured more than 900 as it toppled hundreds of wooden homes and tore 3-foot-wide fissures in the ground. Highways and bridges buckled, leaving officials struggling to get emergency supplies into the region.

Some 10,000 people fled to evacuation centers as aftershocks rattled the area. Tens of thousands of homes were left without water or power.

The quake triggered a fire in an electrical transformer and also caused a leak of radioactive water at the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant, the world's largest in terms of electricity output.

The leak was not announced until the evening, many hours after the quake. That fed fresh concerns about the safety of Japan's 55 nuclear reactors, which supply 30 percent of the quake-prone country's electricity and have suffered a long string of accidents and cover-ups.
Curious here...does Entergy have a financial interest or stake in Japan's problem plagued Nuclear industry? If the littany of mistakes, problems, and leaks is any example, the Green Nuclear Butterfly is betting that Entergy has a stake in Japan's nuclear present and future, and that is a scary thought indeed.

Two News Items...Cracked Japanese Reactor, Homer Simpson Protests

Nuclear Reactor on The Brink of Chernobyl in Japan after early morning earthquake...a bullet dodged...this time.
Two breaking news items to report here:

1. Japan has suddenly changed its tune, and has admitted the reactor shaken to its core in the western coastal city of Kashiwazaki, near Niigata, about 160 miles northwest of Tokyo is spewing forth radioactive contaminants into the Sea of Japan...the NRC has offered to SEND HELP. Like a freaking egg, a newer, yet still very fragile reactor core has BROKEN UDER PRESSURE, and here we sit in the Hudson Valley with not one, but two reactors built right on top of and earthquake fault line.

Nuclear scare after Japan quake

A strong earthquake in central Japan has damaged a large nuclear power plant causing a leak of radioactive material, officials at the plant have said.
2. Meanwhile, closer to home in New York city, seems some protests/street actions are shaping up in New York City for the opening next week of the new Simpson's movie...what better opportunity to bring attention to Indian Points failing reactors that are leaking strontium 90 and tritium into the Hudson River? The new Simpson movie, and the evacuation scene that plays a crucial part in the movie are a perfect back drop to use in bringing public attention to the very real fact that Entergy and the NRC's evacuation plan for Indian Point is a non workable piece of shit.

We are watching our news sources to bring you up to the minute information on Japan's radiation leaks...all we can do, is thank God that the epicenter of the earthquake was no closer than it was. Sadly, the NRC could care less about public safety, and will continue to rubber stamp license renewals in the name of a Nuclear Renaissance....after all, the citizens of Westchester County, and New York City are expendable in Entergy's eyes.

Simpsons Movie-National Day of Action
Excellent (imagine it being said sinisterly and with hands in prayer position, fingers tapping rhythmically)
What: National Day of Action - to oppose nuclear power- to expose safety/security issues in the industry- to alert residents of possible new reactors.
The Action:
- Depending on resources activists can: postcard or circulate a petition or collect names (recruitment) to "learn more or be alerted about upcoming actions, events, dems.
- All can: leaflet with factsheets about NP issues, specific concerns around local reactor or potential reactor ideal-If there is interest in media attention, activists should make signs.
- using icons such as the 3-eyed fish or series quotables.
When:
Friday, July 27th
Opening night of the Simpsons Movie
45 mins before movie time.
Directly after (when people get it)
Who: state PIRG canvassers, state Sierra Club activists, PC activists, local grassroots anti-nuke groups.
Where: targeted cinemas in states with reactors and/or face a potential new license.
Top 12
Maryland, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Texas, New York, Vermont, Illinois, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Miss., Pennsylvania...
Background: The Simpsons Series has routinely satirized safety issues surrounding nuclear power plants. If the town of Springfield is supposed to represent "anytown USA", then the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant could be " any reactor in the USA". It is rumored- though Matt Groening's PR have not confirmed - that the SNPP was intended to mock the ill-fated Trojan Nuclear Plant in Oregon.
The Movie plot: Homer mistakenly pollutes the river with toxic waste from the power plant, he loses his job and forces evacuation from Springfield. Even though we don't know how the film plays out, it may be safe to say that NP is not shown in a favorable light.
Please let me know if you are interested in participating in the action or need help coordinating

Back From Vacation, Busy Week Planned

For the sake of our children, IPSEC needs to change their image, and way of conducting business... during the relicensing process, action through consensus is a recipe for failure.
Greetings Blog Readers:
Yes, I have been on vacation, getting some much needed rest and relaxation, but am now back and ready to face what promises to be a very busy week here at the Green Nuclear Butterfly as we man the fortresses, and continue our fight against the wrongful relicensing of the aging and brittled Indian Point Nuclear reactors. Thought I would give a quick run down of some of the things we are working on.

1. Remy should be reporting on the *Rock The Reactors* concert event held this past weekend in Woodstock, New York.
2. Green Nuclear Butterfly is working with FUSE to complete comments opposing the New York State Discharge Permit for Indian Point reactors.
3. We are working to schedule a meeting with the state of New York on the permitting process as a stakeholder, and are going to opposed the state meeting with the NEI who is NOT a stakeholder for Indian Point.

4. We are in the process of interviewing and considering the hiring of our first expert witness as we move our Petition to Intervene further down the track.

5. We will be receiving a full box of necessary documents from the DOE this week, and have to prepare proper paperwork to get other documents that require special clearance.

On other fast breaking news...has the time come for IPSEC and their member organizations to reconsider their basic charter or become obsolete? In recent months, IPSEC's basic way of operating has shown itself to be a dismal failure in our community's time of need...when we are staring a wrongful relicensing square in the face, it is necessary to act fast, to be decisive in which direction to turn as and organization. IPSEC's consensus style of management has been a complete disaster, and as a result deadlines have been, and are about to be missed as they languish in shallow waters while the Manna Jo's of the world drag their feet and keep the organization from reaching agreement on what to do, or what petitions to be a part of.

IPSEC has reached a crossroads, and decision time is upon them...if they are going to be effectively involved in the fight to close down Indian Point, they need to trash the consensus style of operation they have played with for years, and elect a board that has the power to actually make decisions for the organization and its members. Failure to realize and accept this reality, failure to make immediate changes makes them obsolete as and organization, and they will not play a part of any merit in the fight...no clearer sign of this reality can be found than Riverkeeper's sudden departure from the coalition after another meaningless emergency of the STEER committee this past week failed to find any consensus, and all agenda items were put on hold until September.

Green Nuclear Butterfly is actively working with three other organizations to put together a new coalition of the ready and willing. We are taking the necessary steps required to merge the necessary talents needed to be a major player in the relicensing process, and hope to announce these developing plans very soon...if you are your organization would like to be a part of this new coalition, please feel free to send and email to uraniumhotspot@aol.com with all your contact information.

Japan Just Dodges Nuclear Disaster, Is Indian Point Next?

Japan is recovering from a devastating earthquake, but they should consider themselves very lucky, as they just missed what could have been a far more devastating event, the total annihilation and destruction of a nuclear reactor. The explosion and fire at the Kashiwazaki nuclear plant bears an eerie resemblance to the dangerous event we experienced at Entergy's failing Indian Point reactors earlier this spring when a transformer simply BLEW UP, threatening workers, and potentially members of the public as well. If the earthquake had been a bit stronger, or a little closer, the Kashiawazaki Reactor could have been split right down the middle like a cracked egg, and if that had happened, the early morning earthquake would be the least of japan's problems.
Here in America, Entergy's aged and dying reactors known as Indian Point FAILED to meet five of the six siting criteria necessary to be built. Instead of just saying no, our government WAIVED the criteria and allowed these reactors to be built anyway. More astounding, said brittling reactors are built on a known earthquake fault line. Do we have to wait until the egg is broken for the NRC to correct their errors? The time to close Indian Point is now. FAST BREAKING NEWS...the reactor accident is MUCH WORSE than first admitted, Japanese officials admitting radioactive release into the environment...ARE CITIZENS AND THE ENVIRONMENT AT RISK?

KASHIWAZAKI, Japan (July 16) - A strong earthquake struck northwestern Japan on Monday, destroying hundreds of homes, buckling roads and bridges and causing a fire at a nuclear power plant. At least six people were killed and hundreds were injured.

The quake hit the region shortly after 10 a.m. local time and was centered off the coast of Niigata state. Buildings swayed 160 miles away in Tokyo. The hardest-hit area appeared to be Kashiwazaki, a city of about 90,000 in Niigata

Japan's Meteorological Agency measured the quake at a 6.8 magnitude. The U.S. Geological Survey, which monitors quakes around the world, said it registered 6.7.

"I was so scared, the violent shaking went on for 20 seconds," Ritei Wakatsuki, who was on her job in a convenience store in Kashiwazaki. "I almost fainted by the fear of shaking."

Flames and billows of black smoke poured from the Kashiwazaki nuclear plant, which automatically shut down during the quake. The fire, in an electrical transformer, was put out about two hours later and there was no release of radioactivity or damage to the reactors, said Motoyasu Tamaki, a Tokyo Electric Power Co. official.

Tsunami warnings were issued along the coast of Niigata but later lifted.

And I will see all of you on the barricades

Robert, we all know you have three sons with asthma... But please don't exclude "nuclear" from your speech and the equation... It's not oil and coal vs. nuclear... it's oil, coal and nuclear vs. solar, wind and industrial hemp!
~Remy C.

ROBERT F. KENNEDY JR. speech at Live Earth - New York event - July 7th

Now we've all heard the oil industry and the coal industry and their indentured servants in the political process telling us that global climate stability is a luxury that we can't afford. That we have to choose now between economic prosperity on the one hand and environmental protection on the other. And that is a false choice.

In 100% of the situations, good environmental policy is identical to good economic policy --- if we want to measure our economy, and this is how we ought to be measuring it, based upon how it produces jobs and the dignity of jobs over the generations, how it preserves the values of the assets of our community and how it averts the catastrophe of global warming.

If, on the other hand, we want to do what they've been urging us to do on Capitol Hill which is to treat the planet as if it were a business in liquidation, convert our natural resources to cash as quickly as possible, have a few years of pollution based prosperity, we can generate an instantaneous cash flow and the illusion of a prosperous economy. But our children are going to pay for our joyride with denuded landscapes, with poor health, with huge cleanup costs and with climate chaos which is going to amplify over time and that they will never be able to pay.

Environmental injury is deficit spending. It is a way of loading the costs of our generation's prosperity on to the backs of our children. Climate change is upon us. Its impacts are going to be catastrophic and we are causing it. The good news is, we have the scientific and technological capacity to avert its most catastrophic impacts. We only need the political will.

If we raise fuel economy standards in our automobiles by one mile per gallon --- we generate twice the amount of oil that is in the Arctic National Wildlife Refugee. If we raise fuel economy standards by 7.6 miles per gallon we yield more oil than we now import from the Persian Gulf. We can eliminate 100% of Persian Gulf oil.

Think about what that would do for our economy, for our foreign policy, for our global leadership, it would dramatically improve our balance of payments, reduce our national debt and make all of us more prosperous and more independent and spare us from wars in the Mid- East that are costing us, already, a trillion dollars and from entanglements with Mid-Eastern dictators who despise democracy and are hated by their own people.

Now you've heard today a lot of people say that there are many little things that you all can do today to avert climate change on your own. But I will tell you this, it is more important than buying compact flourescent light bulbs or than buying a fuel efficient automobile. The most important thing you can do is to get involved in the political process and get rid of all of these rotten politicians that we have in Washington D.C. --

Who are nothing more than corporate toadies for companies like Exxon and Southern Company, these villainous companies that consistently put their private financial interest ahead of American interest and ahead of the interest of all of humanity. This is treason and we need to start treating them now as traitors.

And they have their slick public relations firms and their phony think tanks in Washington D.C. and their crooked scientists who are lying to the American people day after day after day. And we have a press that has completely let down American Democracy. That's giving us Anna Nicole Smith and Paris Hilton instead of the issues that we need to understand to make rational decisions in a democracy - like global warming.

And so I am going to tell you this, that the next time you see John Stossel or Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity --- these flat- earthers, these corporate toadies, lying to you, lying to the American public, and telling you that global warming doesn't exist --- you send an email to their advertisers and tell them that you are not going to buy their products anymore.

And I want you to remember this, that we are not protecting the environment for the sake of the fishes and the birds, we are protecting it because nature is the infrastructure of our communities. And if we want to meet our obligation as a generation, as a civilization, as a nation, which is to create communities for our children that provide them with the same opportunities for dignity, and enrichment, and good health, and prosperity, and stability as the communities that our parents gave us, we've got to start by protecting our environmental infrastructure.

The air we breathe, the water we drink, the wildlife, the public lands, the things that connect us to our past to our history that provide context to our communities and that are the source, ultimately, of our values and our virtues and our character as a people and the future of our children.

And I will see all of you on the barricades.

Nuclear expansion is a pipe dream, says report

· Hope for new era of cheap, clean power is a 'myth'
· Building more stations would increase terror risk

John Vidal, environment editor
Wednesday July 4, 2007
The Guardian

A worldwide expansion of nuclear power has little chance of significantly reducing carbon emissions but will add dangerously to the proliferation of nuclear weapons-grade materials and the potential for nuclear terrorism, says a leading research group that has analysed the possible uptake of civil atomic power over the next 65 years.
The Oxford Research Group paper, funded by the Joseph Rowntree charitable trust, says that the worldwide nuclear "renaissance" planned by the industry to provide cheap, clean power is a myth. Although global electricity demand is expected to rise by 50% in the next 25 years, only 25 new nuclear reactors are currently being built, with 76 more planned and a further 162 proposed, many of which are unlikely to be built. This compares with 429 reactors in operation today, many of which are already near the end of their useful lives and need replacing soon.

For nuclear power to make any significant contribution to a reduction in global carbon emissions in the next two generations, the paper says, the industry would have to construct nearly 3,000 new reactors - or about one a week for 60 years.
"A civil nuclear construction and supply programme on this scale is a pipe dream, and completely unfeasible. The highest historic rate [of build] is 3.4 new reactors a year," says the report.

The paper - Too Hot to Handle? The Future of Civil Nuclear Power - comes as the UK government consults on a new generation of nuclear power stations and at a time of increased terrorist activity. It argues that worldwide stocks of high-grade uranium are expected to have run dangerously low within 25 years and that a significant increase in nuclear power beyond then will require a new generation of "breeder" reactor.

Though this will reduce the need for high-grade uranium, it says, it will also add immensely to the amount of weapons-grade plutonium being produced. "Even a small expansion in the use of nuclear power for electricity generation would have serious consequences for the spread of nuclear weapons to countries that do not now have them and for nuclear terrorism," it says.

The researchers say that nuclear proliferation is inevitable in the next decade. If all the reactors planned today are built, a further seven countries will have nuclear power. Nine more potentially volatile Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia and Syria, have expressed interest in civil nuclear power, says the paper.

In addition, future demand for electricity will come from the world's poorest countries, which are expected to add nearly 3.5 billion to their populations in the next 60 years. "If nuclear power is to play more than a marginal role in combating global warming, then nuclear power will have to be operated in countries like Bangladesh, Congo, Indonesia, Nigeria and Pakistan, which at present have no nuclear reactors", it says.

"According to the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency, within 30-40 years at least 30 countries are likely to have access to fissile materials from their civil nuclear power programmes that can be used for nuclear weapons and competent nuclear physicists and engineers who could design and fabricate them.

"Future breeder reactors will be fuelled with plutonium and only a small input of uranium. The plutonium will be of a type suitable for use in the most efficient nuclear weapons. The normal operation of these reactors will, as a matter of course, multiply the amount of weapons-usable plutonium available across the world.

"If the decision to go with nuclear power is taken, then the UK will implement a flawed and dangerously counter-productive energy policy.

"The question is whether in the 21st century the security risks associated with civil nuclear power can be managed, or not? Society has to decide whether or not the risks of proliferation and nuclear terrorism in a world with many nuclear power reactors are acceptable."

Backstory

A scramble for uranium to feed the new generation of nuclear plants in China and Russia has led to a huge price increase: the commodity shot up 45% to $138 a pound in the past three months alone - as compared with $10.75 in early 2003, when atomic power was out of favour and nobody wanted to construct facilities. Nuclear is now seen as one way of meeting soaring energy demand while keeping greenhouse gas emissions low.

Entergy, all pretty in green!

Wow, what a relief, I can sleep so much better at night now... They don't credit the illustrator in this report... I'd like to find out who it is, just so I can ask him, or her, how it felt cashing in the check.
Of course, no mention in the text of the $300 million Entergy received from the Federal government last year to clean up their mess in New Orleans... or the billions of tax payers money spent managing their waste... maintaining security on their uranium supply chain, or the damage still imposed on Native American communities... As long as the drawings are cute... who cares? Right?
Gee, we're like so looking forward this bright green nuclear renaissance, with Al Gore and Robert Kennedy Jr. leading the way climbing over the Hollywood prop barricades... For after all... the enemy is oil and coal now... nuclear is our friend again... and Indian Point is so pretty in the moonlight... watching over the Hudson... the fish are happy, the water is clean... the radiation is invisible... the teamsters will watch after you... make the pain of cancer and still births go away... the lies, the deception, the rotten to the core corporate culture, the suits who don't care, just follow the letter of the law... here's our sustainability report... we're part of the community, we care... we're part of a conspiracy that has kept electron production out of the hands of the people, so we can stay fat on the hog, and spend lavishly on pretty PR campaigns to sway children and naive, gullible saps!
Entergy, wow... wow o wow... too cheap to meter... cause all the costs are hidden... delegated to the next generation... Sherwood's been away, a family emergency, he better get back to his blog soon, otherwise I may indeed write or say something there's no turning back from... we police each other... we both have a different set of "don't go there..." but this report... THIS report... really makes me want to scream... because it's so freakin' 1980 greenwash... it's like they don't even have a decent PR team... they are so clueless as to the "real" mood of the country... which is good, which is very good, because this thing will only go to make people angrier... angrier than they already are... at this plant, which persists, which everybody wants gone, which just hangs on and on... with their useless sirens and incompetent staff... a comedy of errors which I hope to God won't lead to something we can't walk away from... and according to this report... everything's just fine... you can sleep at night, we have it all under control, we're your friends... we just make lots and lots of $$$ for a sliver of billionaires... while for half as much, a tenth perhaps, we'd have PVs on every roof!
Wake up people... if Kennedy Jr. there is serious about this barricades stuff... well he better start putting his money where his mouth is and join us, because I really don't see him climb over anything without his handlers cell phoning him it's OK, the press is there, be ready for your media close up...

A Few New Books...

Quiet summer reading... George W. Hopley was director of market research at Enron North America... so the book flap for Nuclear Power Now reads: "an unbias look"... on page 185 "decades of safe performance"... shameless, unabashful peice of nuke propaganda trash. I have not seen the others up close, so I can't tell you yet... If anyone wants to volunteer writing a review... be my guest.

Al Gore in DC a few minutes ago...

Al Gore made NO mention at The National Museum of the American Indian a few minutes ago in Washington DC about nuclear power during his Live Earth concert series opening remarks... this on the steps of the NMAI, a museum dedicated to a people we all know have greatly suffered at the hand of uranium mining... and still does to this day! Al Gore made a point of mentioning the culprits of Global Warming, the oil and coal industry, "consciously" omitting nuclear energy from the trilogy.

This whole Live Earth concert series has a hidden agenda, the nuclear renaissance, the relicensing of ALL old nuclear power plants... assuring complete centralized Federal control of electron generation... The entire environmental community has been sucked into this vacuum of lies and deceit... including many musicians and artists who haven't taken the time to analyze who the sponsors of this event really are... Proctor & Gamble, Chevrolet, Hearst, Saturn, Philips...

This comment I received from a Native American friend:
"While Al Gore was VP, didn't he and Clinton dump the nuclear stockpiles at USEC inventories into the market thereby creating an artificial demand for uranium which is now driving the ISL/ISR mining boom out here? Then right afterwards Al Gore unleashed "An Inconvenient Truth" on the herd coercing them into believing that they need nuclear power to combat global warming. Weren't they also the same bunch that tried to deregulate the utility companies out West just prior to the rolling brown outs? Who is the front man approaching the utility companies, what is his agenda and purpose?"

Anonymous Entergy Idiot

What kind of a Entergy idiot comes to a anti nuclear blog tossing out plant security information? I made a post regarding an explosive laden vehicle, pointing out how wrong sighted the NRC is in limiting the size to a 4x4 vehicle...someone who seems to know a whole lot about Indian Point posted a comment as Anonymous on the Green Nuclear Butterfly blog, pointing out all the reasons why I am an unreasonable person, explaining in great detail (be it real information or imaginary information) why Indian Point was/is immune from a terrorist successfully getting an explosives laden vehicle onto the plant sight.

A part of the reasoning employed by this person, is that any BIG TRUCK coming on to the Indian Point plant legally is going to already have some serious clearance, and it's travel will be traced from it's departure sight to Indian Point. Kind of like the over turned truck in North Carolina, or perhaps like the radioactive material Indian Point sent to the wrong facility kind of tracking? Or are we talking the kind of security that saw Indian Point's evacuation code software sent to a sister plant via the mail by mistake kind of security? Or perhaps this person is talking about the Indian Point security where intrusion alarms are ignored as it is assumed a small animal has comprimised security. Maybe it is the kind of Entergy security that saw a control room employee sleeping?

Seems that any AUTHORIZED large truck will be Lojack monitored, and voice coached all the way into the facility. Further, any such LARGE VEHICLE with special circumstances will even have helicopter surveillance as it heads towards, and arrives at the plant. Any unauuthorized vehicles, according to this comment poster would be STOPPED by berms and vehicle barriers, which are always in place. OK, we know about these vehicle barriers, and how inadequate they could be under the right situation.

The commenter then talks about Indian Points GREAT WALL...like the one along the river, where anyone can stand across the river from the plant any time they want? You mean the great wall, where someone could lob shoulder launched grenades/rockets at will for a limited period of time, the same shoulder launched grenades, rockets and even mortars that the NRC eliminated from the DBT. Further, lets keep something in mind as we explore security at Indian Point...a truck bomb set off in Iraq today killed 105 people...would this commenter have us believe, that Indian Point can stop vehicle bombs at the plant, when our military forces are having no such luck stopping suicide bombers in Iraq, who seem capable of attacking when and where they want at will?

The poster seems absolutely sure, that Indian Point's WALL of concrete can stop anything up to, and including a M1A1 Main Battle tank...ODD, Bush has told us a wall will not keep out illegal aliens, that building a fence/wall along our Souther border with Mexico will not stop illegal aliens from gaining entry, but we are too believe that Indian Point's comedy of errors security force can stop a determined group of say 20 well trained terrorists? Further, what if said explosives laden vehicle is not the main attack, but a diversion...oh, let us guess, the poster would have us believe Indian Point would know this, and thus ignore the attack, let the truck harmlessly explode...

Further, according to the commenter,Indian Point has posted deliberately misleading road signs at Indian Point, that will lead the intruders into a DISARM AND KILL zone far away from the reactors. Sure, a terrorist is going to be looking for road signs if they get onto the sight, they would not have taken the time to download from the internet the various assorted maps and aerial views of the sight. Further, sure a fake sign leading them away from the highly visiable reactors would FOOL THEM!

I've posted the commenters remarks below in their entirety...I give them little if any credibility, but do ask this question. If this person is really in the know, if some of the security enhancements he speaks about are true, what is he doing sharing them out on the internet?

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Terrorist Attack On Indian Point-Explosives Laden ...":
Porgie, should I just say right off that you are a VERY unrealistic individual, which means almost any objection you can bring up is nonsense, on its face. That said, lets dive into your "Large explosive laden truck" scenario.

First, large trucks are an oddity at Indian Point. Trucks over a certain size, length, and weight cannot enter the site by any means at all. Any such oversize arrivals must be tightly coordinated with a security sponsor, for a gate removal. The truck so favored will be Lojack-monitored (and voice-coached) every inch of its travel from its source, to its arrival outside, but not in, Indian Point. If any special circumstances attach, the said truck will even be overflown by helicopter surveillance during its entire trip.

The arrival/acceptance area at Indian Point is over a mile from any vital machinery, and is so situated that a series of earth mounds, or berms, intervene between the gate and the plant. Let us say that Indian Point decides to test these provisions by exploding a large truck at the arrival area. The force of the explosion will be directed upward, into the air , dissipating harmlessly.

Let us now revert to consideration of a hostile large truck, without an overflight, without a security sponsor. It can not enter the plant under any circumstances. The preventive vehicle barriers which are always in place, will not be removed, and so said truck can explode in Buchanan, or at 351 Dyckman Street Peekskill, but it cannot explode within a mile of Indian Point nuclear plant.

Moreover, even if the truck were aided and abetted by a sleeper Al Qaeda operative posing as its security sponsor, and gained a gate removal operation, the areas accessible for large vehicles outside "The Great Wall of IPEC" do not intersect with any vehicle lanes coming near any vital equipment.

Any vehicle-accessible area at IPEC is strictly segregated from any vital machinery, and the segregation is rather large and chunky--- 8 foot high, 8 foot thick reinforced concrete wall barriers insurmountable even by M1A1 Main Battle tanks.

Moreover, intentionally deceptive road signposts have been installed, to be ignored by those in the know, but directing any unsuspecting newbie into a "Disarm and Kill" area set aside for security problems, in a corner of the campus not containing any vital machinery.

To waste one's single martyrdom on such a guaranteed failure, is not in the spirit of Wahabb Sunnist correct action. A martyr must behave as the prophet would have behaved, and will target a less prepared enemy, for maximum effect.

Spitfire Agency ~ Green for the Money!

This week Rock The Reactors reached out to Sarah Haynes, founder of the Spitfire Agency, a self-proclaimed green PR firm which has worked with hundreds of famous musicians, "so-called" green companies and non-profit organizations, currently "greening" the Virgin Festival in Maryland, in a failed attempt to enlist their participation in the shut down of Indian Point. This was her reply:

"Hi Rem,
Thanks for your note. We are an agency that gets hired to create events and/or create event marketing. When you are ready to hire an agency for a specific project that can be boiled down to a who-what-where-when-why, that's the best time to call. We need a much more specific call to action, and a rough budget, in order to get involved.
Keep up the good work!
Many thanks,
Sarah"

In otherwords, "Drop dead, we're only in it for the money!"

And this is a woman who has worked with Lydia Lunch, Julia Butterfly Hill, Woody Harrelson, Jello Biafra, Living Tree Paper, Ralph Nader & Winona LaDuke... Scary!

Terrorist Attack On Indian Point-Explosives Laden Vehicle

Just a question the NRC should answer regarding a terrorist attack on Indian Point.

In various terrorist attacks here in America, such as the first World Trade Center attack, and the bombing in Oklahoma, a LARGE rental truck was detonated. With that very real reality, why is it then, that the DBT (Design Basis Threat) scenerio for a bomb laden vehicle has the terrroist only using a four wheel drive vehicle loaded down with explosives? Could it be, that the larger rental truck (such as a 28 foot Ryder box truck) if successfully detonated would do castrophic damage to the reactor facility, and the nuclear industry did not want that fact known to host communities such as ours here in the general area of Indian Point?

Everyone enjoy their 4th of July, and as you are enjoying fireworks this evening, think about a Ryder truck laden down with explosives detonating right next to one of the reactors.

Boilermakers Union Flexs Muscle At Entergy's Request?

At the last two NRC meetings (license renewal and annual assessment), Entergy has been using the brut force of Union workers to stack the deck at these public meetings, their numbers being used to intimidate members of the public, and concerned citizens into silence. Members of various environmental groups have conveniently been bumped into (in a harsh manner) by these thugs from said unions, with whispered threats such as, "You better watch yourself." These kinds of scare tactics are not only unethical, but may verge on being illegal.

Wednesday's meeting on Indian Point's License Renewal Application saw a huge contingent from the Local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers in attendance...free hats, shirts, and a food buffet paid for by Entergy (where flash cards were used to let workers know what points to make) were incentives for those attending...we spoke to many of these union workers who admitted privately they showed up out of fear at what might happen if they did not attend.

Jerry Connolly (business manager - secretary treasurer The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers local no. 5) trotted out a speech that could have, might have been written by Entergy. Yet, in a private conversation, he admitted he does not care one way or the other about Indian Point, other than his concern for his men having jobs...there is a brilliant strategy if I ever saw one...lets risk the lives of 21 MILLION people so that 1300 union workers can keep their jobs...what is wrong with this thinking? Has it occurred to these workers that they would be heroes if they stepped forward publicly, and spilled the beans on Indian Point? Seems that Jerry Connolly had some concerns, again privately, about Indian Point, but we'll cover those in a future article. It should be noted, that Jerry of all people knows the risks, and has spoken out about risks to the workers who work in the power industry, as this comment from his shows:

"Our members are becoming seriously ill and dying prematurely because of exposure to such toxic substances as cadmium, lead, asbestos and mercury,"

For now, we are working on getting the contact information for some of those Boilermakers who were at that meeting. We would encourage all of you to contact these people, and ask that they stop with the tactics of fear and intimidation, ask them to end the BULLYING tactics at these public meetings. Below is Jerry Connolly contact information, as well as contact points for the International Headquarters staff. Public meetings must be about discourse and conversation of the issues, not about intimidation and carefully delivered threats.

Updates From Yesterday's Public Meeting On Indian Point License Renewal Application

First, the knuckle draggers were out in full force attempting to intimidate those wanting Indian Point's license renewal appliation to be denied. What was interesting, is several of the Union members admitted they showed up to STAY OUT OF TROUBLE. So, Entergy and/or the union are making attendance at these public meetings mandatory, creating in effect a FALSE show of support for the failing, leaking reactors at Indian Point. One of Entergy's employees (who we outed on this blog) got rather hostile, but then that is to be expected, since none of these men seem to have the ability to intellectually discuss the issue, but instead stoop to verbal and written attacks, both here on the Internet, and/or in real time such as at the meeting. Seems to me, if they are going to attend these public meetings, they could at least LEARN and EDUCATE themselves on the issues, rather than relying on flash cards held up in front of them while they fed their faces at the Entergy Food Spread in an adjoining room.

Other Important Issues:

Requests:

It has been requested, that prior to starting 60 day intervener clock , the NRC must require Entergy to place all documents referred to and incorporated in the application be made available for inspection in a public place. (Roni, a lying, twit if there ever was one, of the NRC, argued absurdly that public availability would violate copyright, honestly if that violates copyright then there could be no books in the libraries). The real truth...the NRC and Entergy want to keep the public as ignorant as possible.

List of all criteria under which a new license would be denied. This is the third time this request has been verbalized to the NRC, and so far Richard Barkley (NRC point person) has been less than cooperative on this.

List of what systems and components are specifically within scope. Again, they are trying to keep us from having a realistic idea of the components included and within scope for purposes of our contentions.

List of all deviations and exemptions granted to all three plants. Again, this is a request that has been submitted before, and the NRC keeps saying the same thing over and over again, "We are working on it."

List of all underground pipes, composition, footage, and what is running through them.

Electrical separation repair/mediating documents and a walk down -This request dates back to Congresswoman Sue Kelly, and we are STILL WAITING.

Require that all ASLAB and other meetings regarding relicensing be held in Westchester (county center), not in NRC's backyard where they can easily swamp the facility with UNION THUGS.

Seeking a determination by the NRC whether there is even enough room on the site for the waste, both in pool and dry casks (with and without cooling towers).

GENERAL NOTE: Over 36 people signed up to speak. The NRC once again stopped the meeting before everyone who wanted to speak had a chance, and said the place was closing (not true), but they didn't want to rent it longer. If people make the effort to come to a meeting they should be given the chance to speak. This has been and on going issue and complaint that Richard Barkley is well aware of, but as usual, the NRC is far more concerned about keeping the public voice silent than seeing meaningful public participation in the process. As was so elequently stated in the afternoon meeting, perhaps the time has come, since the NRC is so dismally failing in protecting human health and safety that they all need to resign.

Doric Maldernero: Suez United Water is planning to use desalination for Rockland drinking water.

Philip Musegaas NRC is trying to limit who are allowed stakeholder status, but he made the point that the Hudson River is everyone's, therefore everyone along Hudson has standing or NYS. Further, in the case of a significant incident, where is the stakeholder line drawn?

Philip Musegaas also raised the issue that IP 1 is in violation of it's SAFESTOR agreement because there are radiological releases.

Ken Olin: About the 1996 Generic Impact Statement how it is applied differently for new construction and existing plants. They said that because it's new construction there is a larger impact, however in the relicense situation there is enormous construction as well, regarding the dry cask field, and the probability that replacement of the domes is necessary during the time of relicense (REFURBISHMENT).

1996 Environmental Impact Statement is being rewritten - they have therefore acknowledged that it is out date - post 9/11. Seems there is a contention in there some place.

ELECTED OFFICALS WHO MADE APPEARANCES

Brian Shapiro - Ulster County Legislature - Environmental Chair - asked the NRC to consider the uniqueness of location in the review, that they can't look at Indian Point as if “it is in a time machine.”

Connie Coker - Rockland County Legislature - Environmental Chair.

Dan O'Neil - Mayor of Buchanan-Trotted out his same old tired lines about how his small community taxes would go up. Excuse us Mr. Mayor, but Peekskill faces the same risks as your community, with NONE OF THOSE TAXES BENEFITS, and there are a lot more of us here. Maybe you need to wean yourself off the swine teat, and start being honest about the risks Indian Point poses to all of us. Further...for clarification, less than THIRTY Indian Point workers live in Buchanan, and the majority of the Indian Point workers have located themselves out of harm's way, choosing to commute in from Dutchess county.

Joe O'Brien - Eliot Engel's office - read statement.

Susan Spear - John Hall's office - read statement. We see how sincere (or not) he is about his promise to SHUT DOWN INDIAN POINT...seems to me, that he himself could find the time to attend such important public meetings...after all, there are only three of them in the entire relicensing process.

Manna Jo Greene - handed in 4000 signatures on petitions against relicensing.

Riverkeeper - asked that the Environmental scoping meeting not take place in the last 2 weeks of August. Funny they ask for this, but were not willing to sign onto our official request for a 60 day extention.

Union People (THUGS) - Boilermakers this time, once again took up lots of parking, were being intimidating, a few even voicing whispered threats to a few of us. Was told when I asked one of them why they were here, he said he had to come and would be in trouble if he didn't. He didn't know anything about IP.

Beyond Nuclear and Nuclear Policy Research Institute Combine to Challenge Nuclear Power and Weapons
TAKOMA PARK, MD - The incoming board and staff of Beyond Nuclear are extremely pleased to announce that Beyond Nuclear will now pursue its mission under the auspices of the Nuclear Policy Research Institute (NPRI).
NPRI was established by Dr. Helen Caldicott, a renowned physician who has devoted the last 35 years to an international campaign to educate the public about the hazards of the nuclear age and the necessary changes in human behavior to stop environmental destruction. NPRI is a tax-exempt and tax-deductible organization.
Beyond Nuclear is a new initiative that aims to educate wider audiences about the connection between nuclear power and nuclear weapons and the need to abandon both to safeguard our future. Beyond Nuclear works to promote positive, solutions-focused messages and to provide guides to safer alternatives to these dangerous technologies. Beyond Nuclear was previously undertaken through Nuclear Information and Resource Service.
Beyond Nuclear and NPRI share a synergistic vision: to communicate the grave threats to health, environment and safety implicit in the complexities of the nuclear industry. To that end, Beyond Nuclear will focus its work on the public and the media using dynamic campaigns and its cadre of expert spokespeople to create a consistent high-profile presence for these issues. It will also serve as a resource with which to build and expand the movement for a world beyond nuclear.
Our staff - Paul Gunter, Kevin Kamps, Cindy Folkers and Linda Gunter - has comprehensive expertise in all aspects of nuclear power. In addition, Beyond Nuclear will partner with national and international specialists who can offer information and insight on nuclear weapons and sustainable energy. These specialists will be listed on our Web site (www.beyondnuclear.org).
In announcing the incorporation of Beyond Nuclear into NPRI, Dr. Caldicott said: "I am confident that the distinguished new staff and new board of the Institute will be effective stewards of NPRI. I will continue to be a keen supporter of NPRI for long into the future. Above all, I look forward to the day when we can all celebrate the termination of both the nuclear power and nuclear weapons industries." Dr. Caldicott will not be involved in the daily operation of NPRI although she will remain its founding president.
Collectively, the Beyond Nuclear Board and Staff have all been actively involved in the anti-nuclear movement for many decades.

Electromagnetic Field Light Salt Water On Fire

Kanzius, 63, invented a machine that emits radio waves in an attempt to kill cancerous cells while leaving normal cells intact. While testing his machine, he noticed that his invention had other unexpected abilities. Filling a test tube with salt water from a canal in his back yard, Kanzius placed the tube and a paper towel in the machine and turned it on. Suddenly, the paper towel ignited, lighting up the tube like it was a wax candle. (Thanks to Olivia & Hugg.com)
