Entergy, all pretty in green!

Wow, what a relief, I can sleep so much better at night now... They don't credit the illustrator in this report... I'd like to find out who it is, just so I can ask him, or her, how it felt cashing in the check.

Of course, no mention in the text of the $300 million Entergy received from the Federal government last year to clean up their mess in New Orleans... or the billions of tax payers money spent managing their waste... maintaining security on their uranium supply chain, or the damage still imposed on Native American communities... As long as the drawings are cute... who cares? Right?

Gee, we're like so looking forward this bright green nuclear renaissance, with Al Gore and Robert Kennedy Jr. leading the way climbing over the Hollywood prop barricades... For after all... the enemy is oil and coal now... nuclear is our friend again... and Indian Point is so pretty in the moonlight... watching over the Hudson... the fish are happy, the water is clean... the radiation is invisible... the teamsters will watch after you... make the pain of cancer and still births go away... the lies, the deception, the rotten to the core corporate culture, the suits who don't care, just follow the letter of the law... here's our sustainability report... we're part of the community, we care... we're part of a conspiracy that has kept electron production out of the hands of the people, so we can stay fat on the hog, and spend lavishly on pretty PR campaigns to sway children and naive, gullible saps!

Entergy, wow... wow o wow... too cheap to meter... cause all the costs are hidden... delegated to the next generation... Sherwood's been away, a family emergency, he better get back to his blog soon, otherwise I may indeed write or say something there's no turning back from... we police each other... we both have a different set of "don't go there..." but this report... THIS report... really makes me want to scream... because it's so freakin' 1980 greenwash... it's like they don't even have a decent PR team... they are so clueless as to the "real" mood of the country... which is good, which is very good, because this thing will only go to make people angrier... angrier than they already are... at this plant, which persists, which everybody wants gone, which just hangs on and on... with their useless sirens and incompetent staff... a comedy of errors which I hope to God won't lead to something we can't walk away from... and according to this report... everything's just fine... you can sleep at night, we have it all under control, we're your friends... we just make lots and lots of $$$ for a sliver of billionaires... while for half as much, a tenth perhaps, we'd have PVs on every roof!

Wake up people... if Kennedy Jr. there is serious about this barricades stuff... well he better start putting his money where his mouth is and join us, because I really don't see him climb over anything without his handlers cell phoning him it's OK, the press is there, be ready for your media close up...

A Few New Books...

Quiet summer reading... George W. Hopley was director of market research at Enron North America... so the book flap for Nuclear Power Now reads: "an unbias look"... on page 185 "decades of safe performance"... shameless, unabashful peice of nuke propaganda trash. I have not seen the others up close, so I can't tell you yet... If anyone wants to volunteer writing a review... be my guest.

Al Gore in DC a few minutes ago...

Al Gore made NO mention at The National Museum of the American Indian a few minutes ago in Washington DC about nuclear power during his Live Earth concert series opening remarks... this on the steps of the NMAI, a museum dedicated to a people we all know have greatly suffered at the hand of uranium mining... and still does to this day! Al Gore made a point of mentioning the culprits of Global Warming, the oil and coal industry, "consciously" omitting nuclear energy from the trilogy.

This whole Live Earth concert series has a hidden agenda, the nuclear renaissance, the relicensing of ALL old nuclear power plants... assuring complete centralized Federal control of electron generation... The entire environmental community has been sucked into this vacuum of lies and deceit... including many musicians and artists who haven't taken the time to analyze who the sponsors of this event really are... Proctor & Gamble, Chevrolet, Hearst, Saturn, Philips...

This comment I received from a Native American friend:

"While Al Gore was VP, didn't he and Clinton dump the nuclear stockpiles at USEC inventories into the market thereby creating an artificial demand for uranium which is now driving the ISL/ISR mining boom out here? Then right afterwards Al Gore unleashed "An Inconvenient Truth" on the herd coercing them into believing that they need nuclear power to combat global warming. Weren't they also the same bunch that tried to deregulate the utility companies out West just prior to the rolling brown outs? Who is the front man approaching the utility companies, what is his agenda and purpose?"

Anonymous Entergy Idiot

What kind of a Entergy idiot comes to a anti nuclear blog tossing out plant security information? I made a post regarding an explosive laden vehicle, pointing out how wrong sighted the NRC is in limiting the size to a 4x4 vehicle...someone who seems to know a whole lot about Indian Point posted a comment as Anonymous on the Green Nuclear Butterfly blog, pointing out all the reasons why I am an unreasonable person, explaining in great detail (be it real information or imaginary information) why Indian Point was/is immune from a terrorist successfully getting an explosives laden vehicle onto the plant sight.

A part of the reasoning employed by this person, is that any BIG TRUCK coming on to the Indian Point plant legally is going to already have some serious clearance, and it's travel will be traced from it's departure sight to Indian Point. Kind of like the over turned truck in North Carolina, or perhaps like the radioactive material Indian Point sent to the wrong facility kind of tracking? Or are we talking the kind of security that saw Indian Point's evacuation code software sent to a sister plant via the mail by mistake kind of security? Or perhaps this person is talking about the Indian Point security where intrusion alarms are ignored as it is assumed a small animal has comprimised security. Maybe it is the kind of Entergy security that saw a control room employee sleeping?

Seems that any AUTHORIZED large truck will be Lojack monitored, and voice coached all the way into the facility. Further, any such LARGE VEHICLE with special circumstances will even have helicopter surveillance as it heads towards, and arrives at the plant. Any unauuthorized vehicles, according to this comment poster would be STOPPED by berms and vehicle barriers, which are always in place. OK, we know about these vehicle barriers, and how inadequate they could be under the right situation.

The commenter then talks about Indian Points GREAT WALL...like the one along the river, where anyone can stand across the river from the plant any time they want? You mean the great wall, where someone could lob shoulder launched grenades/rockets at will for a limited period of time, the same shoulder launched grenades, rockets and even mortars that the NRC eliminated from the DBT. Further, lets keep something in mind as we explore security at Indian Point...a truck bomb set off in Iraq today killed 105 people...would this commenter have us believe, that Indian Point can stop vehicle bombs at the plant, when our military forces are having no such luck stopping suicide bombers in Iraq, who seem capable of attacking when and where they want at will?

The poster seems absolutely sure, that Indian Point's WALL of concrete can stop anything up to, and including a M1A1 Main Battle tank...ODD, Bush has told us a wall will not keep out illegal aliens, that building a fence/wall along our Souther border with Mexico will not stop illegal aliens from gaining entry, but we are too believe that Indian Point's comedy of errors security force can stop a determined group of say 20 well trained terrorists? Further, what if said explosives laden vehicle is not the main attack, but a diversion...oh, let us guess, the poster would have us believe Indian Point would know this, and thus ignore the attack, let the truck harmlessly explode...

Further, according to the commenter,Indian Point has posted deliberately misleading road signs at Indian Point, that will lead the intruders into a DISARM AND KILL zone far away from the reactors. Sure, a terrorist is going to be looking for road signs if they get onto the sight, they would not have taken the time to download from the internet the various assorted maps and aerial views of the sight. Further, sure a fake sign leading them away from the highly visiable reactors would FOOL THEM!

I've posted the commenters remarks below in their entirety...I give them little if any credibility, but do ask this question. If this person is really in the know, if some of the security enhancements he speaks about are true, what is he doing sharing them out on the internet?

Porgie, should I just say right off that you are a VERY unrealistic individual, which means almost any objection you can bring up is nonsense, on its face. That said, lets dive into your "Large explosive laden truck" scenario.

First, large trucks are an oddity at Indian Point. Trucks over a certain size, length, and weight cannot enter the site by any means at all. Any such oversize arrivals must be tightly coordinated with a security sponsor, for a gate removal. The truck so favored will be Lojack-monitored (and voice-coached) every inch of its travel from its source, to its arrival outside, but not in, Indian Point. If any special circumstances attach, the said truck will even be overflown by helicopter surveillance during its entire trip.

The arrival/acceptance area at Indian Point is over a mile from any vital machinery, and is so situated that a series of earth mounds, or berms, intervene between the gate and the plant. Let us say that Indian Point decides to test these provisions by exploding a large truck at the arrival area. The force of the explosion will be directed upward, into the air , dissipating harmlessly.

Let us now revert to consideration of a hostile large truck, without an overflight, without a security sponsor. It can not enter the plant under any circumstances. The preventive vehicle barriers which are always in place, will not be removed, and so said truck can explode in Buchanan, or at 351 Dyckman Street Peekskill, but it cannot explode within a mile of Indian Point nuclear plant.

Moreover, even if the truck were aided and abetted by a sleeper Al Qaeda operative posing as its security sponsor, and gained a gate removal operation, the areas accessible for large vehicles outside "The Great Wall of IPEC" do not intersect with any vehicle lanes coming near any vital equipment.

Any vehicle-accessible area at IPEC is strictly segregated from any vital machinery, and the segregation is rather large and chunky--- 8 foot high, 8 foot thick reinforced concrete wall barriers insurmountable even by M1A1 Main Battle tanks.

Moreover, intentionally deceptive road signposts have been installed, to be ignored by those in the know, but directing any unsuspecting newbie into a "Disarm and Kill" area set aside for security problems, in a corner of the campus not containing any vital machinery.

To waste one's single martyrdom on such a guaranteed failure, is not in the spirit of Wahabb Sunnist correct action. A martyr must behave as the prophet would have behaved, and will target a less prepared enemy, for maximum effect.

This week Rock The Reactors reached out to Sarah Haynes, founder of the Spitfire Agency, a self-proclaimed green PR firm which has worked with hundreds of famous musicians, "so-called" green companies and non-profit organizations, currently "greening" the Virgin Festival in Maryland, in a failed attempt to enlist their participation in the shut down of Indian Point. This was her reply:

Terrorist Attack On Indian Point-Explosives Laden Vehicle

Just a question the NRC should answer regarding a terrorist attack on Indian Point.

In various terrorist attacks here in America, such as the first World Trade Center attack, and the bombing in Oklahoma, a LARGE rental truck was detonated. With that very real reality, why is it then, that the DBT (Design Basis Threat) scenerio for a bomb laden vehicle has the terrroist only using a four wheel drive vehicle loaded down with explosives? Could it be, that the larger rental truck (such as a 28 foot Ryder box truck) if successfully detonated would do castrophic damage to the reactor facility, and the nuclear industry did not want that fact known to host communities such as ours here in the general area of Indian Point?

Everyone enjoy their 4th of July, and as you are enjoying fireworks this evening, think about a Ryder truck laden down with explosives detonating right next to one of the reactors.

Boilermakers Union Flexs Muscle At Entergy's Request?

At the last two NRC meetings (license renewal and annual assessment), Entergy has been using the brut force of Union workers to stack the deck at these public meetings, their numbers being used to intimidate members of the public, and concerned citizens into silence. Members of various environmental groups have conveniently been bumped into (in a harsh manner) by these thugs from said unions, with whispered threats such as, "You better watch yourself." These kinds of scare tactics are not only unethical, but may verge on being illegal.

Wednesday's meeting on Indian Point's License Renewal Application saw a huge contingent from the Local chapter of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers in attendance...free hats, shirts, and a food buffet paid for by Entergy (where flash cards were used to let workers know what points to make) were incentives for those attending...we spoke to many of these union workers who admitted privately they showed up out of fear at what might happen if they did not attend.

Jerry Connolly (business manager - secretary treasurer The International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers local no. 5) trotted out a speech that could have, might have been written by Entergy. Yet, in a private conversation, he admitted he does not care one way or the other about Indian Point, other than his concern for his men having jobs...there is a brilliant strategy if I ever saw one...lets risk the lives of 21 MILLION people so that 1300 union workers can keep their jobs...what is wrong with this thinking? Has it occurred to these workers that they would be heroes if they stepped forward publicly, and spilled the beans on Indian Point? Seems that Jerry Connolly had some concerns, again privately, about Indian Point, but we'll cover those in a future article. It should be noted, that Jerry of all people knows the risks, and has spoken out about risks to the workers who work in the power industry, as this comment from his shows:

"Our members are becoming seriously ill and dying prematurely because of exposure to such toxic substances as cadmium, lead, asbestos and mercury,"

We would encourage all of you to contact these people, and ask that they stop with the tactics of fear and intimidation, ask them to end the BULLYING tactics at these public meetings. Updates From Yesterday's Public Meeting On Indian Point License Renewal Application

First, the knuckle draggers were out in full force attempting to intimidate those wanting Indian Point's license renewal appliation to be denied. What was interesting, is several of the Union members admitted they showed up to STAY OUT OF TROUBLE. So, Entergy and/or the union are making attendance at these public meetings mandatory, creating in effect a FALSE show of support for the failing, leaking reactors at Indian Point. One of Entergy's employees (who we outed on this blog) got rather hostile, but then that is to be expected, since none of these men seem to have the ability to intellectually discuss the issue, but instead stoop to verbal and written attacks, both here on the Internet, and/or in real time such as at the meeting. Seems to me, if they are going to attend these public meetings, they could at least LEARN and EDUCATE themselves on the issues, rather than relying on flash cards held up in front of them while they fed their faces at the Entergy Food Spread in an adjoining room.

It has been requested, that prior to starting 60 day intervener clock , the NRC must require Entergy to place all documents referred to and incorporated in the application be made available for inspection in a public place. (Roni, a lying, twit if there ever was one, of the NRC, argued absurdly that public availability would violate copyright, honestly if that violates copyright then there could be no books in the libraries). The real truth...the NRC and Entergy want to keep the public as ignorant as possible.

List of all criteria under which a new license would be denied. This is the third time this request has been verbalized to the NRC, and so far Richard Barkley (NRC point person) has been less than cooperative on this.

List of what systems and components are specifically within scope. Again, they are trying to keep us from having a realistic idea of the components included and within scope for purposes of our contentions.

List of all deviations and exemptions granted to all three plants. Again, this is a request that has been submitted before, and the NRC keeps saying the same thing over and over again, "We are working on it."

List of all underground pipes, composition, footage, and what is running through them.

Electrical separation repair/mediating documents and a walk down -This request dates back to Congresswoman Sue Kelly, and we are STILL WAITING.

Require that all ASLAB and other meetings regarding relicensing be held in Westchester (county center), not in NRC's backyard where they can easily swamp the facility with UNION THUGS.

Seeking a determination by the NRC whether there is even enough room on the site for the waste, both in pool and dry casks (with and without cooling towers).

GENERAL NOTE: Over 36 people signed up to speak. The NRC once again stopped the meeting before everyone who wanted to speak had a chance, and said the place was closing (not true), but they didn't want to rent it longer. If people make the effort to come to a meeting they should be given the chance to speak. This has been and on going issue and complaint that Richard Barkley is well aware of, but as usual, the NRC is far more concerned about keeping the public voice silent than seeing meaningful public participation in the process. As was so elequently stated in the afternoon meeting, perhaps the time has come, since the NRC is so dismally failing in protecting human health and safety that they all need to resign.

Doric Maldernero: Suez United Water is planning to use desalination for Rockland drinking water.

Philip Musegaas NRC is trying to limit who are allowed stakeholder status, but he made the point that the Hudson River is everyone's, therefore everyone along Hudson has standing or NYS. Further, in the case of a significant incident, where is the stakeholder line drawn?

Philip Musegaas also raised the issue that IP 1 is in violation of it's SAFESTOR agreement because there are radiological releases.

Ken Olin: About the 1996 Generic Impact Statement how it is applied differently for new construction and existing plants. They said that because it's new construction there is a larger impact, however in the relicense situation there is enormous construction as well, regarding the dry cask field, and the probability that replacement of the domes is necessary during the time of relicense (REFURBISHMENT).

1996 Environmental Impact Statement is being rewritten - they have therefore acknowledged that it is out date - post 9/11. Seems there is a contention in there some place.

Brian Shapiro - Ulster County Legislature - Environmental Chair - asked the NRC to consider the uniqueness of location in the review, that they can't look at Indian Point as if “it is in a time machine.”

Dan O'Neil - Mayor of Buchanan-Trotted out his same old tired lines about how his small community taxes would go up. Excuse us Mr. Mayor, but Peekskill faces the same risks as your community, with NONE OF THOSE TAXES BENEFITS, and there are a lot more of us here. Maybe you need to wean yourself off the swine teat, and start being honest about the risks Indian Point poses to all of us. Further...for clarification, less than THIRTY Indian Point workers live in Buchanan, and the majority of the Indian Point workers have located themselves out of harm's way, choosing to commute in from Dutchess county.

Joe O'Brien - Eliot Engel's office - read statement.

Susan Spear - John Hall's office - read statement. We see how sincere (or not) he is about his promise to SHUT DOWN INDIAN POINT...seems to me, that he himself could find the time to attend such important public meetings...after all, there are only three of them in the entire relicensing process.

Manna Jo Greene - handed in 4000 signatures on petitions against relicensing.

Riverkeeper - asked that the Environmental scoping meeting not take place in the last 2 weeks of August. Funny they ask for this, but were not willing to sign onto our official request for a 60 day extention.

Union People (THUGS) - Boilermakers this time, once again took up lots of parking, were being intimidating, a few even voicing whispered threats to a few of us. Was told when I asked one of them why they were here, he said he had to come and would be in trouble if he didn't. He didn't know anything about IP.

Beyond Nuclear and Nuclear Policy Research Institute Combine to Challenge Nuclear Power and Weapons

TAKOMA PARK, MD - The incoming board and staff of Beyond Nuclear are extremely pleased to announce that Beyond Nuclear will now pursue its mission under the auspices of the Nuclear Policy Research Institute (NPRI).

NPRI was established by Dr. Helen Caldicott, a renowned physician who has devoted the last 35 years to an international campaign to educate the public about the hazards of the nuclear age and the necessary changes in human behavior to stop environmental destruction. NPRI is a tax-exempt and tax-deductible organization.

Beyond Nuclear is a new initiative that aims to educate wider audiences about the connection between nuclear power and nuclear weapons and the need to abandon both to safeguard our future. Beyond Nuclear works to promote positive, solutions-focused messages and to provide guides to safer alternatives to these dangerous technologies. Beyond Nuclear was previously undertaken through Nuclear Information and Resource Service.

Beyond Nuclear and NPRI share a synergistic vision: to communicate the grave threats to health, environment and safety implicit in the complexities of the nuclear industry. To that end, Beyond Nuclear will focus its work on the public and the media using dynamic campaigns and its cadre of expert spokespeople to create a consistent high-profile presence for these issues. It will also serve as a resource with which to build and expand the movement for a world beyond nuclear.

Our staff - Paul Gunter, Kevin Kamps, Cindy Folkers and Linda Gunter - has comprehensive expertise in all aspects of nuclear power. Kanzius, 63, invented a machine that emits radio waves in an attempt to kill cancerous cells while leaving normal cells intact. The Atomic Legacy-Nuclear Dead Babies

As we move ever closer to getting this project up and running in a big way, it will be shown publicly we are hoping this coming week at the Indian Point relicensing meeting, there has been some slack about the theme. People find it harsh, in your face, our accusations of nuclear energy amounting to an abortion machine akin to feat mongering. Others wonder where we came up with the idea for the Indian Point Dead Baby World Tour.

There are several reasons to have settled on this theme, including Elena's incredibly heart wrenching photographs of the fallout area in and around Chernobyl, and the abandoned dolls she has come across in her travels.

Another crucial reason for the Nuclear Dead Baby, is that dolls have been a part of the horror that is nuclear from the very beginning of the supposed Friendly Atom. If you research old photographs from the various and assorted atomic tests in the name of military/commercial atomic energy, research the Friendly Atom, you'll find dolls were a routine participant in those early days. Their gruesome poses, haunting expression adding a surreal reality to the message that nuclear kills. As our campaign moves along, we'll share many of these photographs with our readers, but tonight, thought I would share a peek into the dolls long involvement in the Nuclear Industry, by introducing you to Priscilla and some of the members of her family who were forced, like many of our soldiers to endure nuclear bomb testing under the guise of the Friendly Atom and CHEAP ELECTRICITY.

Seems that my article, "Trail of Nuclear Tears-Exposing Nuclear's Horrid Truths", posted here on this blog, and picked up by OpEd which uncovers some of the lies that are the nuclear industry has the NEI (Nuclear Energy Institute) and their Nuclear Notes bloggers in and uproar. The good news, is they are once again caught in another lie, and have shown again they are incapable of discussing in a rational manner issues brought up that they would as soon never see the light of day. Such as the FACT that the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in its fifty years of operation consumed enough coal supplied electricity to meet all of the energy needs for Los Angeles county for a period of 18,250 years...that is a BOAT LOAD OF CO2!

Seems Michael Stuart is so incapable of controlling his emotions and personal bias that he instantly goes into attack mode, and trys to discredit the author of the article (me) and my blog, the Green Nuclear Butterfly by cross pollenating comments in the Nuclear Notes blog, and here. I suppose I should be honored, since he attacks Helen Caldicott in the NEI blog post with the same venom and hatred aimed at myself. Michael in his childish fit of rage accuses Ms. Caldicott of lying and manipulating data, while ignoring the very real fact that it took and act of Congress to force the DOE to provide compensation and medical help to nuclear workers dying of cancers caused by their exposure in the nuclear work place. Further, DOE's own studies now admit that at least 22 cancers have direct links to a persons exposure to radioactive contaminants.

This same VERMIN then comments on his own article, complaining that Green Nuclear Butterfly filters comments from readers, then falsely claims, that the NEI blog allows unmoderated comments. To verify this statement on the part of and NEI employee (assuming this since he writes on/for the NEI Nuclear Notes Blog) I posted a comment to said blog...when said comment was posted by the Green Nuclear Butterfly, we received the following notification from the NEI Nuclear Notes Blog posted below. Maybe Michael needs to meet up with Rod Adams and the two of them can cry in their beer.

Anyone wishing to post a comment on that blog should note that all comments are filtered by the moderator. This is particularly unfortunate those of us that might have something factual to say.

Apparently, in order to get a comment posted there you must either:

1. agree with the author,
2. present a weak argument that the author can easily refute, or
3. wait until the author has had sufficient time to write a smack-down rebuttal before posting your comment.

Sadly, that is no way to foster a debate.

The author of that blog should note that even NEI's blog allows unmoderated comments.

Chill Out at the Indian Point Corral

I don't often break promises... In fact hardly ever... Some people resent me for it, because no matter what, if I have promised something, I will keep trying to deliver on that promise till my dying day, I never go back on a promise... I keep coming like the Terminator, with elephant memory... a nightmare to some who have moved on, can't understand why I have to take my word is my bond to such extremes!!!

But in this case I will make an exception. I made a promise to these United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America members, that I wouldn't publish their photo rejoicing in our Radioactive Energy drink, proudly holding these glow-in-the-dark cans, because after I snapped the picture, the head of their local chapter, and members of the NRC, approached them and explained that we were an anti-nuclear table, that the owners of the company making the drink were Rock The Reactors and Green Nuclear Butterfly sponsors, that they could lose their jobs if this picture was published.

So the men in the photograph, came back to me and asked, gently, however hinting, that they would rather we not meet again, that if I were to put this photo online, we would indeed find each other again. Now, first, I liked these guys, think they liked me... or they wouldn't have allowed I snap the photo in the first place. You know, despite what people think, I have more in common with them than 90% of the wealthy folks on the board of directors at IPSEC, Riverkeeper or Clearwater! This environmental mission has been my life. I've never gathered moss, worked in clubs selling drinks rather than don suit and tie, play their silly parlor games. To me it's not a case of Not In My Back Yard... it's a case of Not On My Planet!!! And given half a chance, we can make our case, just sit down with John Schaeffer at Real Goods for five minutes, or Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd... They'll tell you the score, how you're being manipulated by your Union... party to a scheme threatening millions of lives on the Hudson!

But I also don't take kindly to being threatened, however gently... the ruckus these Union guys caused on the steps outside that day, intimidating our supporters, when in fact less than 10% of these Union men ever set foot inside the Indian Point nuclear power plant, never questioned the operations there... came for the t-shirt, the cap, the over time pay, and yes the free can of Radioactive Energy drink... then the harassing phone calls started, the anonymous attack blogs intensified. Yesterday, Sherwood gets a death threat. That's how the nuclear power industry operates... Sherwood and I knew this going in, that if this is to heat up, if we are going to successfully attract attention to the issue, we are going to face the consequences tugging the tiger's tail! Sadly that's how the media reacts today, unless Paris Hilton screams or cries "Indian Point" ~ nobody is going to pay this any heed.

Let me quote the Clearwater program (page 6) this weekend: "...following conditions be met prior to accepting Entergy's application to relicense Indian Point for another 20 years." We don't want the following conditions be met... The folks we represent and work with want Indian Point closed! Period! No quarter... like in Goldfinger... "We don't want you to talk Mr. Bond, we want you to die!" Unlike Clearwater, we are not telling our volunteers to not voice their own opinion, to water down the message, round off the corners, dilute the solution, to tell the public this is a petition to make Indian Point safer, not shut it down, that we tried that and it didn't work, like that young woman I interviewed in my Vlog on Sunday!

Unlike Clearwater, we don't have contributors with cushy jobs or connections to Entergy, who want to play good neighbor... Like that man walking around the festival with a Paramount Theater t-shirt expressing what a good citizen Entergy is for contributing so much money to the community, to local arts... When will Peekskill and its neighboring towns come to realize, that you can't have Indian Point stay open while at the same time greet Entergy as a good neighbor. Did you know not even 10% of those who work at the plant live within a 20 mile radius of Indian Point? What do Entergy workers know that we don't I wonder?

So don't threaten me, my family, my friends, my colleagues, don't call me in the middle of the night calling me a loser, you will never live half my life... Don't send me threatening emails or weird packages... get in my face at public meetings, muscling me around... I might be a stringy 54 year old... tired and beat and weatherworn... but I have more intel and commando training experience than you will ever earn, I can put you down with a kill in three moves, you won't even know what hit you... I could do that to an adult by age 12... and a sharp shooter too... my dad was nuts, OK? I became so fearful of this power, this training, I swore never to raise my hand or my fist in anger again... so don't push me... because in this fight, probably the last environmental fight in my life... you will never know how many battles I've won running the show from behind the scenes.

So you three guys in the picture, I respect you, I honor you, I understand the position this is putting you in, I empathize, but we have a battle to fight, a war to win... tell your bosses to leave you the f*** alone, and to leave us the f*** alone, or this is going to escalate into a drag out, kicking and screaming mess... I don't think either side wants this, least of all Clearwater and Riverkeeper, who have been so desperately trying to keep this oh so amicable, I'm throwing up from the overdose of estrogen!

Instead why don't you ask us about all the amazing opportunities the wind and solar industry can bring you... how a friend of mine, a colleague of yours, who worked as an underwater welder at Indian Point, is now making a killing drilling wells for the geothermal industry! Instead of coming looking for me to break my legs, burn my house down, ask yourselves, are these nuclear jobs really worth all they're cracked up to be? Or are they just harping an old tired and worn technology, nobody wants, nobody wanted in the first place... everyone knows the truth except those who still buy into the messages of deception pumped out by DoE and DoD! The French, in the 60's, allowed then president Pompidou to sell out their country to Westinghouse! Look at them now, faced with horrendous nuclear waste problem... no solution, no end in site... the health and well being of their entire nation at risk.

I don't want to witness the Clearwater festival downward spiral into a green Wal-Mart... this year I noticed a sad turn... blue backstage wrist bands... creating a divide between audience and performers... it didn't used to be that way... the Blue Meanies are creeping into Clearwater's organization... is Pete Seeger aware of this? Does he know who the people are in his midst? Does he see the devil infiltrating, corrupting, as he sings NoNukes songs with his Raging Grannies friends... does he know the wolf is not only at the door, it's already in the herd?

Bring it on guys, we're taking Indian Point down... Nobody wants a revolution, but you're going to get one anyway... just for the hell of it... because we need a good summer of get even. Frankly, if this upsets a few cocktail party goers, spills drinks as they gasp at the news a couple of agent provocateurs have snuck in through the back door, like Gary Cooper in Vera Cruz, look at me, do I look like I care? Clearwater was created to clean and protect the Hudson river... Entergy and Indian Point are killing it... killing us, producing energy we don't need, at horrendous risk and cost, no matter what they tell you, they lie... through their teeth... because their corporate culture of death doesn't know any different, it's what they do for a living, they cash the check, they feed their spawn.

The solar energy and the wind industry know that if Indian Point shuts down, it will be a boom to their business... it will be a boom to tourism in Peekskill... which is such a lovely, beautiful town, crippled by this plant nobody in their right mind would want to live next door to if they really had a choice in the matter, why the community is so depressed, half the stores boarded up... You can't pay people to live there.

Since we started using MySpace to reconnect the anti-nuclear community, revive the anti-nuclear movement, the nuclear industry is now blanketing it with ads to recruit nuclear workers... The industry can't find enough qualified young people, yet we need a new generation who loves Toxic Waste Zombies, who grew up with Garbage Pail Kids, to clean up this radioactive mess... If the focus of the industry was to close down the old plants, stop the madness, sit down with anti-nuclear scientists, work out the kinks... maybe the industry would have a future, cause right now, with the upheaval that's building up, against the tyranny of this one world nuclear order... we're not going to have a moment of peace. You want love, you gotta earn it, you gotta give a little... give us Indian Point as a token of your good will. The plant's done. Like an old dog, it had its day... nobody is going to support anything the nuclear power industry tries to do if ~ again ~ you give America martyrs like Karen Silkwood!

Peace... join the party, the party is about closing Indian Point, now, not by 2015... now, this year, as soon as possible, put this country back on the right track. Until that happens, you'll need a runaway train to stop me from organizing a revival of the anti-nuclear spirit in this country. And there's one thing I'm really good at, that's organizing. We are going to win this one, so just to save us all the long drawn out process, the waste of time, energy and resources, already 8 times more than any other nuke in the country, or so we've been told... why not just let it go... call it quits... let's create roundtables, reassess the whole of the nuclear industry... leave the good folks of the Hudson Valley out of this, give them back their river... so the state doesn't have to bring in the National Guards, soften the edges, cushion the blow, try to play nice... This is not touch football... this is rugby... it's going to escalate into a calamity if you don't use this opportunity to do the right thing, give the people of New York what they elected both Eliot Spitzer and John Hall into office for!

NRC Smacks Entergy's License Renewal Application

Great news folks...Indian Point just hit a MAJOR snag in the process to relicense their aging, failing reactors. Seems that the NRC has found some crucial OMMISSIONS in the application...OH GEE, like that is a big surprise. More importantly, these are issues we now know to make contentions on...trust me, they left those items out for a reason, not because it was a clerical oversight.

Dear Mr. Kansler:

By letter dated April 23, 2007, as supplemented by letter dated May 3, 2007, Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc. (Entergy) submitted an application for renewal of Operating Licenses Nos. DPR-26 and DPR-64 for the Indian Point Nuclear Generating Unit Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.

By teleconference on June 6, 2007, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff informed representatives from Entergy that certain information is needed for the staff to complete the acceptance review of the license renewal application (LRA) for the Indian Point Nuclear Generating Unit Nos. 2 and 3. Specifically, the NRC staff informed Entergy that the current licensing basis for Unit 2 was not fully represented in accordance with Part 54.4(a)(3) of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR 54.4(a)(3)).

During its acceptance review, the NRC staff determined that the applicant has not included within the scope of license renewal those systems, structures, and components relied on in the safety analyses or plant evaluations to perform a function that demonstrates compliance with the requirements for station blackout (SBO) per 10 CFR 50.63, and safe shutdown per 10 CFR 50.48. In this regard, the LRA did not include information on the gas turbines currently credited as an alternate power supply for the Appendix R and SBO events.

Government Enrichment Plans Exposed

The Prime Minister must today rule out signing any contracts for nuclear enrichment plants or high-level nuclear waste dumps anywhere in Australia.

Not only has the Government been busted on its ongoing discussions with the nuclear industry about proposals to build a uranium enrichment plant, but now a senior Government nuclear official has also let the cat out of the bag about the Government’s secret enrichment “principles”.

Mr John Carlson, the Director General of the Australian Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office, told Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency on 5 June 2007 that “I think our principle is to have enrichment in Australia in the future".

It is clear that if the Howard Government is re-elected it will impose its dangerous nuclear plan on Australians lock, stock and barrel.

Mr Carlson’s comments confirm the Howard Government is continuing to develop plans for uranium enrichment, and it would appear is having talks with foreign governments, including the Russian Government.

The Government has been trying to keep this quiet before the federal election, but it has been busted.

The Government has a proven track record of secret meetings with companies wanting to bring the dangerous and costly nuclear industry to Australia.

The Industry Minister must come clean and reveal what discussions the Government has had with other governments, as well as Australian and overseas companies; and the Prime Minister must rule out having a nuclear enrichment plant anywhere in this country.

It would appear that Caboolture – just north of Brisbane – is a key part of the plans, having been targeted for a nuclear enrichment plant. Enrichment plants produce long-lived, highly toxic radioactive waste.

Green Nuclear Butterfly's Attendance at Clearwater Festival Elicits Anonymous Death Threat on Blog This Morning

The same person, or groups of persons who have lobbed up onto the internet various and assorted meanspirited hate filled blogs against Green Nuclear Butterfly and its publisher seem to have esculated their campaign of intimidation against us. As many of our readers know, Sherwood Martinelli (that would be me) of Green Nuclear Butterfly was at the Clearwater Festival this past weekend collecting signatures on a very crucial Petition for Rulemaking that will be sent out to the NRC this week.

This morning, checking my email I was at first pleased to see someone had left a comment on our blog...I was far from pleased to open said comment, and find therein a death threat. If Entergy, Indian Point their employees and supporters do not like our anti nuclear positions, they should step forward from out of the shadows and debate us on the issue. Stooping to threats, intimidation, outing of personal information, and now death threats is not positive discourse.

I write about this, as I see a troubling escalation in these threats and intimidation that I recognize from my previous activists activities regarding another NRC licensee and their unionized work force. I've been run off the road returning home from a meeting, and trust me it is not an experince any one should have to endure. I share this incident with our readers for one reason...even though we have good reason to believe that these threats are coming from a nuclear insider, the NRC could care less. Even though they are charged with protecting human health and safety in a stakeholder community, they have no mechanisms to investigate when the Pro-Nuclear side (possibly even licensee employees) decides to use threats of bodily harm and intimidation against stakeholders who oppose the continued operation of a failing nuclear facility.

At the Annual Assessment meeting in April, when union workers associated with Indian Point were brought in by the droves to all but block the entrance to the meeting, intimidate members of the public by the shear force of their numbers, the NRC did nothing to clear them away from the entrance to the building. You can bet, that if 1000 anti nuclear stakeholders all showed up in similiar numbers something would have been done to disperse us. Even more disturbing...these people who showed up, who voiced quiet threats, who deliberately took up positions on the steps leading into the building were ordered to be there, were paid for their presense at the meeting.

These same Union Members had no problems in wanting/demanding cans of the free Energy Drink (Radioactive Energy) that Green Nuclear Butterfly was handing out at the meeting, but when they realized one of our members had snapped pictures of them for publication in our blog, they not so subtly let us know we had not best publish them, as they would find us. Unfortunately, their threats and intimidation worked, as the person who snapped the pictures, worried about personal safety decided not to put them up on our blog, or anywhere else. Oh well, lesson learned, next time I'll bring my own camera.

Speaking of cameras...anyone from the Anti Nuclear movement want to volunteer to film next Week's NRC meeting on relicensing? As we know, the NRC deliberately does not record or document these meetings, so that anything they say or admit cannot be used against them...IE, in the last public meeting, Sam Collins of the NRC stated very clearly that in the case of a fast moving incident at Indian Point, evacuation will not work...we should have had video footage of that comment upon on YouTube hours after the meeting.

Clearwater 07, The Summer of Get Even!

Anti-nuclear activist Dr. Helen Caldicott, once disrobed with 50 others and marched through San Francisco chanting "Nudes, not nukes!" She was delighted to hear about a 2002 naked version of the peace sign, a sign based on an inverted life rune, and first used as an anti-nuclear emblem in 1958, at a demonstration outside Aldermaston, a British research center for nuclear weapon development.

Thoughts After A Full Day at Clearwater Festival

It's 10:21 PM, Saturday June 16th, 2007 and I have just spent the entire day at the Clearwater Festival over in Croton on The Hudson as a volunteer. We accomplished, it is hoped, some wonderful things. Not sure for how long, but planning on being back there again tomorrow beating the pavement for more signatures.

Our Petition for Rule Making which will be filed with the NRC next week now has over 50 signatures on it...a good start, though had hoped for far more. Our location could have been a lot better, and in the lessons learned department, I should have opted for my own booth as the Green Nuclear Butterfly. We also had around 70 people who have an interest in being interveners sign up to attend and as yet to be announced informational meeting on what that will entail on their part. Being honest, I am afraid being and intervener is more work, and requires a lot more dedication and time than most can, or are willing to muster.

Met some delightfully wonderful people manning the table, including a very interesting person by the name of Paul, but more on that conversation in a later post as I am bushed. Congressman John Hall stopped by the booth to say hello...I was for the most part polite, but unless the air is cleared, I have some very serious reservations at this point where he is concerned. Think he means well, but he's not really a fighter, and we are not going to win this fight being mush balls. We need some testosterone in this movement if we are going to close Indian Point, need LOTS of people who are not afraid of some serious old school civil disobedience. Had two different people associated with Clearwater today tell me that my research abilities and passion for the fight are admired, but that quite a few people consider me a loose cannon...well, maybe we need a few more loose cannons.

One thing is really bothering me...waging a intervenor war with Entergy and the NRC, win, lose or draw is going to take money, and quite a bit of it. Unless you can back up your claims and allegations with experts, you, simply stated, are DEAD IN THE WATER. We have 21 Million people that live within 50 miles of Indian Point...if even 10 percent of them donated just ONE DOLLAR each, we would have a magnificent chance of giving the other side a serious run for their money...I have suggested a $1.00 donation campaign for the IPSEC committee working on a comprehensive Petition to Intervene, and I am also sharing that idea here, but with my own organizations name on the idea. If you are reading this, surely you can afford one dollar towards the legal and expert testimony costs involved in this fight? Surely you have friends that would toss in one dollar? Is one dollar to much to ask for, to much to give towards a battle that is our only hope to see Entergy's Indian Point reactors decommissioned? Riverkeeper sent out a letter to its faithful asking for a donation of $500 dollars...great if they can get the money, and use it effectively. Personally, I believe it is the average work-a-day citizens that can win this fight, our one dollar donations that can build a legal machine capable of taking on Goliath and winning the war...so how about it, if you are reading this, can you spare one dollar? Can you post this message to your groups, email it out to your friends?

Background: Indian Point Nuclear Plant is located just 24-miles from New York City, 3 miles from West Point. It is the only nuclear plant in the country surrounded by 21 million people. There is no possible evacuation plan for the area. Indian Point is aging, corroding and leaking radioactive waste into the groundwater and the Hudson River.

Indian Point is also recognized to be one of the most attractive terrorist targets in the nation. (American flight 11 soared right by it minutes before smashing into the World Trade Center.)

Entergy, the owner/operator of Indian Point, now wants to squeeze every dollar of profit out of this aging plant and has filed an application to keep it operating 20 years beyond its expiration in 2013 for Indian Point 2 and 2015 for Indian Point 3. Instead of protecting the public health and safety, the NRC protects the profits of the nuclear industry.

CURRENT SITUATION: Green Nuclear Butterfly is a grassroots alliance that is working on legal grounds which could prevent the granting of new licenses for Indian Point’s two deteriorating and dangerous nuclear reactors.
