Misc. Notes and Post its

Do apologize for being less than prolific the past week or so, but there is more to life and trying to close down Indian Point than just this blog, including starting in on physical therapy in the hopes of getting use of my right hand and arm back sooner than later...anywhooooo.

1. Not sure how many of you watched the Republican debate on CNN last night, but was very dissappointing on numerous levels (positions on illegal aliens and the Iraq War) but specifically for the reason that so many of the Republicans endorsed, even embraced Nuclear Power. Those folks need a clue, but what really iratated the crap out of me, was Senator McCain who showed his ignorance when he stated that the Nuclear Navy had operated for over 50 years without ever having and accident...guess that nuclear submarine running into a Japanese ship a couple years ago was a mirage, and I could list more, but instead shall point this out to the idiot:

1983, July - U.S.A.
A private research group in the U.S., the Fund for Constitutional Government, reported that US nuclear ships have leaked radiation at least 37 times. The leaks contaminated coastal and inshore waters of Japan, Britain, and the U.S. on more than a dozen occasions. The report accused the U.S. Navy of "suppressing information about a 30 year history of radiation accidents and safety problems". ("The Age" / "West Australian" 21st July 1983)

Further, this little news item:

1984, January- NEW YORK, U.S.A.
36 crewmen of the US aircraft carrier U.S.S. Independence were tried over the use of LSD on the ship. ("Daily News" 13th January 1984)

COMMENT: Drug use by military personnel involved with the use of nuclear weapons is a reason for great concern. Between 1975 and 1977, 15,067 military personnel were removed from access to nuclear weapons: of those 4,809 were removed for drug abuse.

Face it McCain, your stand on the Iraq War, your undying love for ILLEGAL ALIENS, coupled with your habit of making ill informed comments like you did last night is why your run for presidency makes you a clown...one that looks like a hamster with too many sunflower seeds between his cheeks...go home, we are tired of looking at you.

2. Don't forget to attend the Clearwater Festival next weekend. It is promising to be a seriously fun GREEN weekend complete with some great music.

3. Remember to reserve June 27th for the NRC meeting.

Have just finishing compiling a history of Indian Point's horrid history, and hope to have it up shortly...as they say, STAY TUNED.

Morning Coffee Atomic Yahoo Reading

This morning I'm trying to email Sherwood a few choice links from my EndSecrecy Yahoo Group and AOL keeps bouncing the emails back... so I'm wondering... is the secret NRC police blocking our communications channels? Or am I just being my usual touch paranoid?

Why not take this opportunity to share with all of you a few of the old gems I found. The EndSecrecy list is one of the oldest and largest "conspiracy-alternative" politics data-base on the Net. I started it back in 1998, as a companion to the EndSecrecy website, which was created in support of an alternative energy demonstration in front of the Capitol steps that many years ago.

Since then nearly 7000 articles have been posted, about topics rarely if ever touched upon in daily newspapers or national TV. It's a testament to Yahoo I might say, for having provided such a free space (yeah, I know, nothin's free) over the years to piss poor researchers like myself so they could share the information they collected with others.

I wouldn't be surprised, since after all, the CIA did try to recruit me when I was 21 years old, that I must have a whole cross-section of folks dropping in and using the search function, especially now that Yahoo installed lightning speed crawlers. It means you can key such words as nuclear, atomic, solar, trilateral... you name it... and strong likelyhood you're going to stumble on something I stumbled onto, that blew my mind too, when I put it up there, for my own benefit and posterity. So here's a few choice bits, since AOL won't let me email Sherwood this morning, which you can all benefit from, so he can read them.

Launch of Indian Point Anti-Nuclear Dead Baby Tour Environmental Direct Action Campaign

Entergy's Indian Point and other nuclear reactors are leaking tritium and strontium 90 into our lakes, rivers and oceans here in America, and around the world. Those radioactive contaminants cause cancers, birth defects, and expose women living near nuclear reactors to a greatly increased risk of stillborn infants. Nuclear Power, the world's largest forced abortion clinic, shades of Adolph Hitler, and radioactive ovens masquarading as vital, safe, secure, and Green nuclear energy here to save us from Global Warming.

To bring national and international attention to this issue, a new environmental direct action campaign is being launched. The Indian Point Dead Baby World Tour.
Read about it, and get involved.

Indian Point Dead Baby World Tour-Details Coming Soon

Entergy's aging, failing Indian Point reactors 2 and 3 are trying to get 20 year license renewals while leaking tritium and strontium into the Hudson River. These radioactive contaminants known to cause cancer also elevate birth defects, and place women at a greatly increased risk of having stillborn babies. To bring attention to this issue, to oppose Entergy's attempts to relicense these dangerous reactors, this blog will be sending symbolic dead babies (dolls) out on a world tour by leaving them at various locations.

If you find one of these dolls, take pictures of them in unique locations, take them with you on vacation, show them the life that Entergy's Indian Point would deny them, even shoot a video and upload it onto YouTube. Send jpeg files of your dead baby photos, or the link to your YouTube video to ipdeadbabytour@aol.com so that we can create and online Indian Point Dead Baby World Tour here on this blog in the hopes of waking up America to the very real danger of a Chernobyl right here in America as the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) wrongfully rubber stamps the license renewal applications of America's 104 aging degradated reactors for another 20 years. We are hoping to have at least 40 Dead Babies (dolls) traveling around the world by the fall of 2007, and need your help.

If you would like to donate a doll to this project, or make a donation, please email ipdeadbabytour@aol.com and we will provide you with a address. Dolls can be male or female, and must have a full set of clothes to wear...passports are not required.

Stay tuned to this blog for more details.

Nuke The Nuke - Run for the h... huh... nowhere to run to!

This morning the NY Post headline reads:
FEDS TARGET NUKE PHANTOM
The article goes on to say:

"Al Qaeda's so-called nuclear whiz kid - a "tantalizing terror figure" with a $5 million bounty on his head - was the radical big shot investigators had hoped to snag in their 18-month JFK-plot probe. The name of "invisible hand" Adnan Gulshair el-Shukrijumah, reportedly was the man Osama bin Laden tapped to lead a previous scheme to detonate nuclear bombs simultaneously in several U.S. cities..."
OK... that's one thing, now read the subtext, read between the lines... What if? What if some suicide nuclear bomber, decides to get close enough to Indian Point, and detonates a backpack nuke... in effect producing the largest dirty bomb one could ever imagine... spreading a cloud of radioactive debris and dust to all four winds, killing millions upon millions of people in a matter of weeks! Not possible you say? Think again!
Now, Mr. Newman, what kind of "security" force in the world, could prevent such a thing? I ask you... Not even "Wackenhut"... usually semi-retired broken down soldiers of fortune, now in their later years guarding McPrisons and not-so-secret bases like Area 51, could spot anyone in time who would venture close enough to the old plant and let off a bomb, with what could easily be a quarter mile, maybe a mile radius range.
And Mr. Newman, you know this possible, for back in '76, you endorsed John Phillips in Westport who, taking a page from "The Curve of Binding Energy" by John McPhee, designed his own nuke at Princeton, in his failed bid for Senate in Connecticut! Remember? He's now living in Switzerland somewhere we hear... been quiet all these years... perhaps knows too much for comfort!
In the 1997 issue of OUI magazine, cover featured above for your ocular pleasure, David Rothmann interviewed Ted Taylor, described as the wiz kid of Los Alamos who tells how to construct a homemade atomic bomb, describes what would happen if it exploded in the World Trade Center and makes 50-year projections that will scare your pants off.
Well, if anyone could read how to do this in a 1970's girlie magazine, in fact the OUI issue right after the one where Arnold Schwarzenegger professed his many sexcapades, imagine anyone getting their hands on some of that missing "plutonium" everyone says has gone awol from the old Soviet Union? Are you comfortable with the thought, someone could blow up Indian Point, and nothing any security force can do about it?

Robert Singleton's Hysterically Funny Truths On Nuclear Reactors

Was doing my usual Sunday night search of the web when I came across a brilliantly written, funny, and very scary article written by Robert Singleton in Good Life Magazine. This man is totally on target, gets what the risk is, and conveys the reality in a brilliantly funny article. We could use his contributions here on the Green Nuclear Butterfly, but for now, will share his opening paragraph, and encourage you to go read the rest of his article.

Nuclear Madness

After a number of columns about TXU Energy’s (and other’s) proposed coal plants, I’m compelled to address a related argument: “Well, if you don’t like coal, I guess we’ll just have to build nuclear power plants.” I don’t think I’ve ever been drunk enough for that line of reasoning to make sense. At the risk of dignifying utter nonsense, here are some reasons why we don’t want to go down that path and should instead be focusing on renewable energy and energy conservation.

You may have missed it, but late last year a small number of media outlets, including the Austin American-Statesman, carried what may have been the most overlooked major news stories of the year. Seems the Nuclear Regulatory Commission did a study of the ability of the nation’s nuclear power plants to survive a 9/11-style terrorist attack. Some of the results were released in the course of a House subcommittee investigation, reported in The New York Times as follows:

June 27th, Public Informational Meeting on Indian Point Relicensing

Are You Inside The Circle Of Death?
First, the date of June 27th, 2007 as the NRC has scheduled its first public informational meeting on the relicensing of Indian Point. Secondly, we here at the Green Nuclear Butterfly found it rather interesting that a public meeting has been scheduled for a document (license renewal application) that has not been fully reviewed by, and officially approved by the NRC...just another example of where expediency of time in rubber stamping the license renewal is far more important than fairness to the public stakeholders.

Also, don't expect to get a lot of time for asking questions, since each of the two sessions scheduled for that day are only one and a half hours long.

Now That The NRC Has Granted The Public Two Separate Yet Equally Important Meetings On The Relicensing Process for Indian Point ….

The Public Needs to Attend!
Whether you believe Indian Point should operate an additional 20 years or not, these meetings are critical to understanding the process and to exercising your right to raise important issues with federal government officials.

HuffingtonPost and the Edison Electric Institute

Edison Electric Institute is a major advertiser for the HuffingtonPost. EEI is just a front for the nuclear industry...and the oil and coal industry...these are the same people who for thirty years have used every dirty trick in the book to keep energy alternatives like solar and wind from entering the marketplace...and they are still using the same slogan..."Do you know where your electricity comes from?" & "ensure that electricity is there for us when we need it" which are slogans I came up with, when I was still naive enough to trust real change was coming, when I was doing research for Solar Age and Photovoltaic International magazines in the early 80's.
I wrote the commercial these slogans came from... the PSA was to be a little kid asking: "Where does electricity come from?" and the answer was "the sun!" with 20 seconds of solar projects, as a PSA for the solar industry. I submitted the PSA pitch to NorthEast Utilities's marketing office when it was in Norwalk, Connecticut. They loved it so much they came back, and said we want to use it... Two months later, on TV, I see this ad with this little kid... and the kid says: "Where does electricity come from?" and then this hand reaches for a light switch and a paternal voice says: "Don't worry, all you need to know is that it's there when you need it!" Next day I went back to the marketing office... and as I reached the door, all the people who worked inside, ran away to hide, and wouldn't let me in.

This is the same sick puppy progenity you're dealing with here... who thirty years later, it's still the same brew, the same mentality who will talk to you green fields of dreams while cashing in their nuke paycheck... They're still using the same rethoric against the solar industry as they did in the 70's... it's still all about centralization of electrical production. They use alternatives like solar and wind in their ads, as a feel good greenwash, but if you look at their pie chart renewables are still only 3% of their total energy sources!!! Except now they call it "diversity" and use National Security as an excuse for their planetary trashing.

It's been a losing battle against the utilities for 30 years, and it's got to STOP! For every dollar they spend on reinforcing the oil, coal, nuke infrastructure, we could be gearing up mass production of solar gear, wind turbines, and battery farms... This is what the Tesla Motors company will bring us, Arnold... Earth Communications Office, Bonnie Reiss, Hollywood! This is the possible future Harvey Wasserman talks about in his new book Solartopia. This is what ALL the anti-nuclear activists and solar advocates have been talking about for years, and because the "enemy" used to have all the money, because they sell you the "electrons" and they won't let go, they're dragging us and the planet down with them. But now we have TED, and IT billionaires, who know the score, and won't sell out!

The Arianna Huffington's of this world. are just a party to it, by accepting dirty money, and if you don't speak up, so will you be. So this time, there's no quarter... we yank it away from them, and it's not going to be pretty, it's not going to be nice, it's war! It's all going to boil down to Indian Point.

HuffingtonPost refused to post my comments below to this post about Josh Dorfman's endorsement of green power in New York state.

"The whole "green energy" thing in New York is dubious, as Entergy, the company which owns the Indian Point nuclear power plant North of Manhattan on the Hudson is funding 3000Mw of wind energy in the state, through ACE-NY, in "addition" to nuclear energy, not "instead" of, as NY Governor Spitzer promised. So where could all this "green" energy possibly be coming from, since the company selling you the green energy credits, CommunityEnergy, is owned by Iberdola. In recent years Iberdrola has downplayed its connections with the nuclear industry, by referring to itself as the largest operator of renewable energy in the world, but it is a member of a consortium, which won the contract to expand and modernize Mexico's only nuclear plant at Laguna Verde. In its favor, Iberdrola recently bought out ScottishPower's renewable energy division, while casting ScottishNuclear aside, since renamed British Energy. We are not certain yet if Iberdrola's purchase of ScottishPower means the utility will or will not join other UK utilities in lobbying for a nuclear renaissance."

So from now HuffingtonPost is on my s*** list.

Paul Newman's Own Nuclear Reactor Safety Salsa

So, last week Paul Newman ran around Indian Point shaking hands, with Steet's nose doing the two cheek fork tongue, and left the facility ready to endorse it, and its security for another 20 years of operation. It was obvious that the doddering fool in this scenario had not done his homework on the facility, or their safety/security record...but then, he is Paul Newman of the blue eyes and faded glory.

Be interesting to know what Paul Newman thought of Entergy's Indian Point sending the REAL McCoy software up to Mass this week, instead of the sample software, so that when it was tested, the four counties surrounding Indian Point, and their emergency planning people started receiving faxes that an incident was occurring at the facility sitting on the Hudson! Neil Sheehan of the NRC, and Steets of Entergy Brown Nose fame were quick to say it was and inadvertent mistake, and the situation was rectified very soon after it happened...OH REALLY?

1. Entergy at first HAD NO CLUE, immediately contacting the State Police to find out who had HACKED INTO THEIR COMPUTER SYSTEM...ignoring the obvious (they forked up big time), they have basically admitted that a computer hacker can get into their system.

2. They sent a viable usable set of software to another reactor site...curious, was it MAILED, and if so standard first class mail? Not very prudent...what if it had been intercepted.

3. What if the Emergency Planners had taken the faxes as the real deal? Sirens sounding, people freaking out, a mass exit of four counties under way before someone called a time out. Also, look at the reverse...what if those faxes had been real, and while they were second guessing people were breathing in radioactive particulates?

So, we have Entergy playing games with safety by claiming that reactor 2 did not go into shut down, but is operating smoothly at 2 percent...all to avoid a White rating, and the NRC with a wink and a nod giving Indian Point a thumbs up on the shrewd move to avoid another unplanned shut down. We have the siren issues with the company promising us a working emergency siren system some time in August...isn't that special. There is the tritium leak into the Buchanan sewer system, and then that small problem with the explosion! We could go on, but think most of us get the picture.

To help Paul Newman get the picture, Remy Chevalier of Rock the Reactors paid a little visit to Paul Newman's organic eatery in Westport, the Dressing Room...never been there, but is the motif pink? "Another Environmentalist for Nuclear Power" bumper sticker, a flyer for Green Nuclear Butterfly and copy of Remy's latest documentary, Toaster 66, about electric car rapid chargers all along the old Route 66, so tourists can travel the old mother road without the $1000 gasoline bill for the trip were left for Paul.

Remy and Paul Newman have been adversaries for quite some time. In the late 70's, Remy fought Mr. Newman and his now retired local attorney Leo Nevas in the hope of establishing a park on Gorham Island, the once charming island in the middle of the river, downtown Westport. Remy's effort failed to prevent Mr. Nevas from building a three story office building. It would seem as if the old rivals are at it again. Remy can't understand how a seemingly intelligent man who would open an organic restaurant, could also advocate the relicensing of an old, dirty, decrepit, dangerous nuclear power plant that is leaking tritium and strontium into the Hudson River.

Maybe next time Paul is in Peekskill to sing the praises of Indian Point, he'll contact the Green Nuclear Butterfly so that we can sit down together and enlighten him to the truth he so far refuses to see...OK, maybe too harsh...sure at his age he does not see as well as he used too.

Another Degradated Part Forces Reactor 2 at Indian Point to Shut Down

OH MY GOD...another significant break down at Indian Point due to rusted, corroded, degradated, failing part, and of course the memorized public relations release that we were never in any danger, and no radioactive materials were released into the public...let's study that last line a minute. No radioactive materials released into the public domain. Could Entergy spokesperson's STEETS clarify that line a bit? Were any radioactive particulates released ON THE SITE, inside the building where the machinery is located? A radioactive release, even if only on site exposes WORKERS to additional radioactive exposure risks. Stop playing games Entergy, and tell the truth, instead of putting out pablum.

Indian Point 2 shut down because of problems with steam generator
By GREG CLARY
THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: May 29, 2007)

BUCHANAN - Indian Point officials hope to have Indian Point 2 back on line by this weekend after the 1,000-megawatt nuclear plant had to be shut down on Memorial Day due to problems with a regulating valve.

The valve is on the system that feeds water to one of the four generators that produce steam. The steam turns a turbine, which creates electricity.

The problem, which happened on the non-nuclear side of the Indian Point 2 plant, showed up about 5:30 a.m. yesterday and workers started reducing the plant's production of electricity to 20 percent. At that level, the valve could be removed without shutting down the plant because of backup valves that operate only at the lower levels.

Workers determined that the valve couldn't be fixed while Indian Point 2 was operating, so they safely shut it down at 3:45 p.m., according to officials from Entergy Nuclear Northeast, which owns and operates Indian Point. The second working reactor at the Buchanan site, Indian Point 3, was unaffected and continues to run at 100 percent.

There was no release of radioactivity to the environment, and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and local public officials were notified of the shut-down, Entergy officials said.

Check back for updates at LoHud.com and read more about this story tomorrow in The Journal News.

Cindy Sheehan Quits Anti-War Movement

At first blush, many might think this headline has nothing to do with the anti-nuclear movement but in some ways, it has EVERYTHING to do with it, when you look at her reasons for quitting, look at why she's hanging up her shoes, and heading home to put her life back together after two years in the fight. Yesterday, I touched on the apathy of the anti-nuclear movement, have on various occassions touched on the fact that some of the old-timers are so entrenched in their own egos that we get NOWHERE. In her fairwell letter, Cindy Sheehan touches on the reality that more people care about who will become the next idol than care about how many more of our troops will die in the next few months while the Democrats (John Hall) we sent to Washington to end that war play political games.
In short, the Democrats have betrayed us every bit as much as the Republicans they replaced did while they were in office...there are just as many fact finding missions going on, and every time they do not want to face the wraith back in their home districts, the politicans are taking trips on our dime. They are betraying us with an Amnesty for 12-15 million illegals, they have sold us and the soldiers down the river by caving into the White House, and people like John Hall, Maurice Hinchey, Nita Lowey, Senator Shumer, and presidential hopeful Hilliary Clinton are selling us down the river on Indian Point...they are giving us nothing but LIP SERVICE on the ISA, and to prove it, go look the bills up, see how many co-signers their bills have, and what their status is. Both John Hall and Hilliary's Clinton show the same lack of forward momentum as their predecessors saw, because the politicians have SOLD US OUT...where is John Hall at on this issue, where was he PERSONALLY when we had the huge OPEN HOUSE back in April?
Cindy Sheehan is suffering the same burn out and frustration that most grassroots activist suffer after awhile...they give the movement all they have, and eventually, their head bruised and bloody from beating it up against the wall, they fade away disillussioned and tired.
How many folks talk privately about their disillussionment with the anti Indian Point movement, but will not cause waves publically, because they do not want to rock the boat, or destroy the unity within the movement...what good is that unity when NOTHING is being accomplished? A few of us individually, and/or as a group will file as intervenors, a few of us will file Petitions for Rulemaking in the hopes of effecting some small changes, but with the apathy out among the general members of the public, with IPSEC struggling to find consensus, and both Riverkeeper and Clearwater refusing to come out fully and completely against nuclear as it would be bad for fund raising, Indian Point is going to be relicensed, and that is fact.
Ask yourselves, do you want HIlliary Clinton spending all her time running for president, and raising money, or do you want her to start acting like OUR SENATOR? Do you want John Hall to worry about raising money, and trying to get re-elected, or do you want him to keep the various promises he made to us when we sent him to Washington? If you are going to throw your money and volunteer efforts behind Riverkeeper and Clearwater, don't you think it's time they actually laid out PUBLICALLY a cohesive plan of attack to stop the wrongful relicensing of Indian Point, rather than lamely tell us they are working with politicians to get and ISA...hello, that strategy is a dead pony. People like Mannajo need to check their egos at the door, and start letting some of the ideas forwarded by the new upstarts through. Further, if Riverkeeper and Clearwater are stopping IPSEC from reaching consensus, then perhaps it is time for those two organizations to LEAVE IPSEC so they can become and effective tool against Indian Point relicensing.
Closing Indian Point is going to take more than handing out pens, bumper stickers and match books at a yearly festival, and the time to become active is rapidly vanishing away into the ethers.

Anti-War Mom Gives Up on Peace Movement

CNN For full article click here:

Sheehan achieved national attention when she camped outside President Bush 's home in Crawford, Texas, throughout August 2005 to demand a meeting with the president over her son's death.

While Bush ignored her, the vigil made her one of the most prominent figures among opponents of the war.

But in a Web diary posted to the liberal online community Daily Kos on Monday, Sheehan said she was exhausted by the personal, financial and emotional toll of the past two years.

She wrote that she is disillusioned by the failure of Democratic politicians to bring the unpopular war to an end and tired of a peace movement she said "often puts personal egos above peace and human life."

Casey Sheehan, a 24-year-old Army specialist, was killed in an April 2004 battle in Baghdad . His death prompted his mother to found Gold Star Families for Peace.

But in Monday's 1,200-word letter, titled, "Good Riddance Attention Whore," Sheehan announced that her son "did indeed die for nothing."

"I have tried every since he died to make his sacrifice meaningful," she wrote. "Casey died for a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months while Democrats and Republicans play politics with human lives."

300 Articles, and Five Months of Publication...Important Milestones for GNB

On December 26th, Green Nuclear Butterfly was launched, which means this past Saturday saw us up and running for five full months, and with this post, we reach the important milestone of 300 articles. With summer officially upon us, Indian Point's license renewal application process is about to get into full swing, as we are expecting the NRC to announce before the end of June that they have officially given the application a green light to move forward...which will leave us only 20-28 months to stop Indian Point from operating for another 20 years.
Chances are it is going to be a lot closer to 20 months than 28, since the NRC informed Green Nuclear Butterfly via first class mail this past Friday that they would not entertain our request for an extension of time...like that is a big surprised from a biased and prejudice regulatory agency.
So, where are we? A group of us were/are working on putting together a Petition For Rule Making program for the Clearwater Festival...question becomes, will Mannajo and a few others kill the idea because it was thought up by GNB, rather than Mannajo, or Lisa Rainwater over at Riverkeeper. We should have the answer to that question next week. OUCH, there goes Green Nuclear Butterfly again, attacking revered and honored environmental groups. Well, maybe if they actually TOOK A STAND, instead of riding the fence in the name of CORPORATE donations.
I've read the application...it's ugly. The environmental report is a mockery, and so far every document/petition/complaint being filed with the NRC they are side stepping. Meanwhile, people (there are 21 million of us living within 50 miles of Indian Point, more than half of those within 25 miles of the plant) seem far more interested in the latest antics of Paris Hilton. Al Gore was speaking on this very point on the "Daily Show" last week. The line between real news, and entertainment has been blurred to the point where most people don't really care about important issues, as they have been programmed to believe it's the niggling minute that they should worry themselves over...Donald and Rosie's TV antics, and their on going hate relationship far more news worthy than tritium leaking from a reactor.
So, Green Nuclear Butterfly is curious to hear from our readers...what are your ideas, or plans to close down Indian Point...do you even care what happens with Indian Point. Let us know. A movement of less than ten people is no movement at all, and far too many in the Green community seem unwilling to get involved in Nuclear, as nuclear is spreading far to much money around to buy them off.

Dick Cheney Protest at West Point

Several hundred people came out Saturday, May 26, 2007 to protest Dick Cheney at West Point, who spoke to a crowd of about 20,000.
Protesters argued they should be allowed on academy grounds to present opposition to Cheney's pro-war views were denied access by federal judges on Friday. They rallied instead in the village of Highland Falls outside a gate to the post.
WESPAC paid $400 for a shuttle bus to take people from the Peeksill Train Station to the rally site but they only collected half of what it cost them.

For those of you who are able to, you are welcome to make an online contribution at http://www.wespac.org to help cover the cost of the bus.

Contributions of $10, $20 or more are all welcome. Checks in the mail made payable to WESPAC Foundation are also welcome, sent to WESPAC Foundation, PO Box 488, White Plains, NY 10602.

Here is a short clip of the march:

Memorial Day Monday Wrap Up

As is the norm, I've had a fabulous Memorial Day weekend spent with friends (old and new) as we all ate and drank too much, and talked into the wee hours of the morning. These people were college educated intellectuals, in short well informed members of society...what was surprising to me, was the lack of knowledge, and in too many cases concern for all things of a nuclear issue, and specifically Indian Point. One person actually (and seriously) quipped, "Indian Point, you mean that old relic is still around, I thought it was closed years ago." Another was convinced I was wrong, because he'd heard Patrick Moore state otherwise, and who was I to question Patrick Moore. This man got rather upset when I pointed out that Patrick Moore was a corporate shill earning $15,000 a speaking engagement, and accused me of just trying to make him look bad...uhhh, excuse me, but Mr. Moore does a fine job of that all by himself.

So, where is the disconnect? If the public is dumb to the issue, we have little chance of mobilizing them for a fight to shut down the plant, and without massive public outcry, the battle is doomed before it ever starts. How can people who spent hours picking out the perfect vegan bottle of wine, who will only let all natural fibers touch their sun blocked perfect skin be so ill informed about a 40 year old reactor (almost) that is dumping tritium and strontium 90 into their drinking water supplies, and the Hudson River...have we reached a point where the environment is only a fun issue if it involves shopping? Are environmental issues only important if you don't have to work at them, only worth pursuit if you can run a success PR and fund raising campaign around them?

My wife and I seriously discussed selling our house this weekend...it's too big for us, and we saw a beautiful small apartment in a gated community right on the water with a view of the Statue of Liberty at a price we could afford. Maybe Entergy will buy this place and turn it into a public shelter, or some absentee landlord will snap it up, and fill it up with 30 or more illegals. Continue to fight the good fight, but do it from a distance. Staten Island is outside the area of death known as the ten mile evacuation zone, and besides, the shopping there is far better than the pickings we have around here.

This past week, got two letters from the NRC, and one from the DOE, and it is obvious all the federal agencies are in on the fix to relicense these aging nuclear facilities in the name of a new energy policy, a Nuclear Renaissance in the name of a false promise of a Hydrogen Economy with nuclear reactors said economy's birth mother...what I find sad, is that the masses accept this rhetoric on blind faith, when the least little bit of research would show it for the lie that it is.

The BIG Clearwater Festival is coming up in June...what we know from the IPSEC list, is that CAN spent $700 dollars in ink pens, bumper stickers, and matchbooks...is that the best we can do in this fight? MoveOn.org can raise a million dollars in a day, mobilize millions of people for some cause, but where are they in this fight? 50 communities across America have already been ordered to continue hosting aging reactors, and because most people want CHEAP electric, are not willing to conserve or sacrifice for something more important than their cappuchino machine, it's OK to keep producing nuclear electricity until the next Chernobyl

Sirens By August 24th...Who Cares, By The Time They Sound, It Will Be Too Late For Us

Entergy has informed the NRC that their new emergency siren system will be up and running properly no later than August 24th...over four months past the deadline is unacceptable, and the $130,000 fine inadequate as well. However, let's be honest with ourselves. If there is a nuclear incident or terrorist attack at Indian Point, by the time those alarms start sending out their warning, it will already be far to late for many of us.

Entergy can march Paul Newman through the plant, they can pay Patrick Moore big bucks to act as their corporate shill, and even bring in Christine Todd Whitman to lie to us about the glory of nuclear, and in the end it will not matter if the site is attacked, or a fast moving event strikes the facility known as Indian Point. Folks like myself can jump up and down, try to warn the general population about the risks, and that too does not matter if no one is paying us heed. There is never any joy in saying, " I told you so." We live in a time of apathy, three monkeys seeing, hearing and speaking no evils...where is and Indian Point employee stepping forth to speak the truth to the world? Where is a rightious man or woman on the inside ready to do what's right for humanity?

Wake up people, the siren system is nothing more than a placebo, and like the evacuation plan, like sheltering in place, it too shall fail us in our time of need.

Indian Point nuke plant owner pledges new siren system by Aug. 24

May 23, 2007, 5:56 PM EDT

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) _ When the owner of the Indian Point nuclear power plant decided it couldn't meet an April 15 deadline for installing a new emergency siren system, it asked for an extension to Aug. 31.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission refused, fined Entergy Nuclear $130,000 and demanded that it come up with a new plan.

On Wednesday, Entergy said its new plan was to have the sirens up and running by Aug. 24, a week earlier than its original request.

The 150 sirens are meant to alert residents within 10 miles to any emergency at the two-reactor installation in Buchanan on the Hudson River, 35 miles north of midtown Manhattan. Despite extensive testing by Entergy and a 2 1/2-month extension granted by the NRC in January, many sirens failed to respond to a radio activation signal during their final test before the deadline.

An older system remains in place and can be used in emergencies.

Entergy submitted its new plan in a letter to the NRC, saying it anticipates being ready by July 18 but might need more time to deal with "potential schedule uncertainties."

"Therefore Entergy is committing to August 24, 2007, as the latest date anticipated for declaring the new siren system operable," the letter said.

NRC spokeswoman Diane Screnci said the commission would examine the plan "to make sure it's acceptable" and would have no immediate comment on it.

Paul Newman Needs To Watch Martin Sheen's Greenpeace Video

This video was found over on You Tube, and sure any semblance to Indian Point's degrated and failing nuclear reactors was/is completely deliberate. Paul Newman needs to endorsement of the plant, and show it where the sun does not shine. Since he seems to LOVE Indian Point so very much, feels it so abundantly safe, how about he move himself and his family in a bit closer to the plant, place himself in a position of having to rely upon a non working evacuation plan, or worse, sheltering in place.

Paul, We Hardly Knew You!

That must make it OK then... I feel all better now! This from a man who would never endorse alternative fuels in racing for fear of losing his oil company sponsors... This from a man who endorsed John Anderson, forsaking Barry Commoner, to give us Ronald Reagan... This from a man who allowed his lawyer Leo Nevas to built a three story monstrosity on the once charming little island in the middle of the river in downtown Westport, CT... where it should have been a park! This against ALL the town's people opposition... This from a man who ran much beloved local Deli owner Julius Gold out of town, Julius who did all the heavy lifting on his salad dressing! His daughter Nell is Newman's only saving grace... If it wasn't for her, there would be no "organic" division at Newman's Own... Newman is "not" the man you see in his films! Boycott Newman's Own? Yes! Boycott ALL his non-organic products!!! Send Paul Newman a clear message. Rock The Reactors is today considering a picket sign vigil in front of his restaurant in Westport... Anyone interested in joining me, just say the word, let's set a date and time!

"Paul Newman has long been a nuclear industry supporter—he even has an NEI sticker on his race car. A few years ago, he tried (fortunately unsuccessfully) to convince Environmental Defense head Fred Krupp to support Yucca Mountain by inviting Krupp to his apartment to meet with NEI… In other words, this is nothing new.I’ve been boycotting Newman’s Own for years."

So, The Parade of Has Been Stars Embracing Indian Point Begins

Once famous, and even respectable Paul Newman of salad dressing and movie fame has sold out to Entergy, and it would be interesting to know how much money was tossed where for his endorsement of Indian Point as the parade of wealthy, elite outside the circle of death, once big movie stars trot in for a short visit at the plant, and to give news hounds their five minutes with a washed up former somebody. In short, it's time for our community to boycott Newman's Own.

Do Groups Seeking To Close Indian Point Need A New Coalition?

Everyone knows the three main organizations *supposedly* involved in the Indian Point fight, the players that get all the money (in donations) to fight the good fight of pushing for closure of Entergy's Indian Point plant. IPSEC is the key group when you want to talk about a coalition of groups working towards a common goal, with Clearwater and Riverkeeper the big 501 3C's that hold the fund raisers, put up a good front, and ask you for a donation, encourage you to take out a yearly membership to support the cause...question is, are any of these groups doing anything of much good, are they really fighting to close down Indian Point, or just giving the public and press lip service? What have they really done to MOBILIZE THE MASSES for this fight?

Lisa Rainwater seems to be the go to woman when the press wants a quote from the anti Indian Point forces, and from what GNB can tell, she wants Indian Point closed, is sincere in her personal beliefs. However, is Riverkeeper anti-nuclear, do they, and will they openly call for the closure of all 104 aging, degradated nuclear reactors now operating in America? With Indian Point slated to submit their application for license renewal this year (which they did on April 30th) why wasn't Indian Point the number one item on Riverkeeper's 2007 agenda of important tasks for the year? Are they anti-nuclear, or just a NIMBY organization? In fact, Indian Point was not even on the list of the six most important items on Riverkeeper's to do list this year.

If Riverkeeper is to be a leader in our community's fight to close down Indian Point, if they are going to be seen as a protector of our Hudson River, of the nation's rivers, they need to do two things publicly. First, much like the Sierra Club has done, as an organization they must take an anti-nuclear stand, and secondly, they as an organization must publicly state their only goal as relates to Entergy, is closure of Indian Point. Riding the fence, playing both sides to the middle in the name of keeping the donations pouring in by hammering only on safety issues related to the Hudson River is inadequate.

Clearwater ranks right up there with Riverkeeper. Can someone explain to the GNB why Indian Point was kept off the agenda at last months meeting with unions on what to do about Global Warming? Can someone verify the rumor that Manna Jo removed Indian Point from the agenda because Eliot Spitzer wanted it that way, because he needed Indian Point out of the news? If Clearwater wants to shut down Indian Point, what is their battle strategy other than praying for Congressman John Hall's doomed to failure legislation seeking an ISA? Will Clearwater's new leader (soon to be voted in) be luke warm when it comes to the fight to close down Indian Point...it is GNB's understanding, that only one of the three people being considered is strongly anti Indian Point, willing to do anything it takes to stop relicensing.

Why did the board of Clearwater deny the citizens a chance to sign a Citizen Petition For Rulemaking at this past weekend's festival, and will history repeat itself at their BIG Clearwater Festival next month? Has the current board of Clearwater made the organization obsolete, nothing more than a group capable of holding social events, and bake sales? Are they so worried about GETTING ALONG with everyone, including the enemy, that they are no longer effective as and activist organization in protecting the environment and its citizens here in the Hudson Valley? The public in and around Indian Point should demand three things from Clearwater before they continue supporting them. First, a public proclamation from their board that Clearwater the organization is anti nuclear as an organization. Secondly, a proclamation calling for full and complete closure and Decommissioning of Indian Point reactors 1,2 and 3. Lastly, a detailed strategy plan to fight Entergy's License Renewal Application. These items should be out to the public before we support the rumored fund raising concert planned with Jackson Browne.

Then we have IPSEC. The problem as Green Nuclear Butterfly sees it with IPSEC is very simple. It is impossible to accomplish much of anything when your bylaws require consensus among ALL MEMBERS of the coalition before you can move forward with any action, sign onto any petition as a group. Even more discouraging, how many times is the dissenting voice in IPSEC Clearwater and/or Riverkeeper? The battle has been joined, the NRC's time clock for relicensing started on April 30th, and we need a coalition that can be decisive and move fast. Building consensus is not something that happens quickly, if at all. Foot soldiers in the fight to close down Indian Point cannot be deployed quickly if everyone is quibbling over small details and singular words, trying to find 100 percent consensus on each and every issue and petition.

No one is saying these groups in their time have not served their purpose...the question is, are any of them capable of doing the job now at hand? Can we rely on a Model T to halt relicensing, or do we need a new, sleek, streamlined coalition that can attack fast and often to slow down the Entergy relicensing juggernaut. Can an organization effectively fight the relicensing of Indian Point if they as an organization are not willing to publicly go on the record as being anti-nuclear, and fully in support of closure and decommissioning of the Indian Point facility and its three reactors? Green Nuclear Butterfly believes it is time for change, time for a new coalition if we are to stop Indian Point's attempt to win a 20 year license renewal. Calling for and ISA is a dead strategy, we need to move on to something else that just might work, and IPSEC, Riverkeeper and Clearwater all seem unwilling or unable to abandon that losing strategy.

We have 22-30 months from April 30th to stop Indian Points License Renewal Application. We are already behind in the fight, do not have our boats in the proverbial water and up to cruising speed. For this reason, Green Nuclear Butterfly believes all the various assorted groups in this fight need a new coalition, one with clear leadership that has the ability to make quick decisions in a timely manner, rather than having to wait for consensus among all members. If you and/or your group agree with this, if you think the time has come for a new modernized coalition, please email roycepenstinger@aol.com expressing your interest. If there is enough interest, and organizational meeting will be held in early June.

If We Do Not Learn From History, We Are Doomed To Repeat It.

The question then is this...can we afford to repeat Chernobyl on and even grander scale with Indian Point?

The Ugly Historical Truth of A Fast Moving Radiological Event

Many of us live in the ten mile circle of death around Indian Point. Millions more live in the 50 mile circle of effect...after Chernobyl, and to this day, there is a 50 mile exclusion zone around the reactor site where no human lives. The NRC would have us believe we are safe sheltered in our homes, even if a nuclear accident hits the facility...do you believe them? Are we as a community willing to take that risk? The aftermath and ongoing effects from Chernobyl should see us state a resounding no, should see us in mass rising to demand the closure of Indian Point.

If a Terrorist Attack Or Significant Nuclear Accident Occurs At Indian Point, Will You Be The Slave Labor Forced To Remediate The Accident?

Because of its far reaching and troublesome content, the You Tube video featured in this post could have been titled, "The Scariest Video Ever Made", but I am dealing with what it could mean for the five counties surrounding Indian Point, and what we as citizens could be forced to do. Watch the video, imagine a serious nuclear accident at Indian Point, then ask yourselves, "Would the government, our president, force those sheltered in the contaminated area to clean it up?" We all know the answer, which is why Indian Point must go.

Preparing For A Nuclear Incident or Terrorist Attack on Indian Point-Our Right To Bear Arms

Looking, somewhat tongue and cheek,at our right to bear arms. How many of you are aware of the fact that in the case of a nuclear incident or terrorist attack, the first thing to be suspended will be the rule of law?

Leave no doubt, when a significant nuclear incident or terrorist attack strikes Entergy's Indian Point reactors, or one of the other nuclear reactors here in America the rule of law will cease to exist. Chaos will rule supreme, and it will be every man, woman and child for themselves as people try merely to survive...in short we will be a part of pure Anarchy, many first responders, members of law enforcement, the blue canaries will be dead and gone. Our own government is spending billions of dollars telling us to be ready, be prepared. Part of being prepared in a worst case scenario is SELF DEFENSE, and that means high fired weapons ready at hand.

Which is what NRC, DHS and all levels of government fail to tell you about, do not even want to discuss. They do not want us being ready to defend what is ours with heavy fire power if the need arises, and in the wake of a significant nuclear event, or terrorist attack that need will arise, and your family's ability to survive if ordered sheltered in place (which you will be) may very well depend on the fire power and ammunition you have readily at hand. If someone(s) desperate for food and/or shelter tries to break in, tries to take what is yours, do you really think trying to dial 911 is going to get you any help in the midst of a nuclear disaster?

Weapons and Ammunition sales should be the fastest growth industry there is around nuclear power plants and related facilities. A private dwelling and its citizens should not have just one weapon, they need several, at least one if not more for every member of the family, and lots of ammo. Don't think boxes here, think cases or pallet loads of ammo...after all, if it becomes every neighborhood for itself, you may have to arm your neighbors as well. Start thinking neighborhood watch on steroids.

A semi automatic 12 gauge, or a 22 pistol is not going to be adequate, you need heavier equipment for this job, and it's highly suggested you attend the next major gun show that comes to town...sure, folks like Mayor Bloomberg would prefer a public without ability of self defense, but then, he has his own personal security detail, all of them adequately armed and dangerous.

Start off with say a 9mm Glock, as it is a gun with a serious bite to it, and with ease you can tuck one into a shoulder holster with little trouble...you have to think Rambo here, be prepared with more than one gun at any given time, as you never know who will be busting down your door in a nuclear incident, and trust me, the odds are they will be armed, and more than willing too use deadly force to take what is yours. A 9mm Glock can be found online, most suppliers ready too UPS it right to your front door.

For distance shooting with accuracy, you might want to seriously consider a high grade Sniper Rifle with scope. When accuracy counts, you need to be prepared. If someone is taking pot shots at you in times of civil unrest, you have to have the right tools for the job of protecting you, your family, and your property...after all, what if someone is trying to steal the vehicle you have at the ready for a last ditch effort at evacuation? Are you willing to let your family perish because someone bigger and stronger than you decides they want to make off with the family hummer?

This article is to some degree tongue and cheek, but there is a certain sad truth in its presentation. Is this what we want in Westchester County? Is allowing Indian Point to remain open worth walking down this path painted before you? Just how prepared are you for the aftermath of a nuclear incident. Perhaps more importantly, how prepared do you want to have to be? With Indian Point up and running, we are a target, and if we are a target, we have to be prepared for the worst as we all have learned from 911.

Your Life Depends On Seeing Beyond NRC Lies...Tell Entergy To Leave Our Community While You Still Can

Another video Entergy, NRC and our Federal Government don't want you too see, as it shows the truth of what a nuclear incident means....76 communities GONE in and around Chernobyl, so starting ticking off our own starting with Buchanan. Peekskill, Ossining, Briarcliff, Pleasantville, and the list would go on and on...WAKE UP PEOPLE, or some of you will die from the continued operation of Indian Point.
